  • I'm building Futurama Bender's head & body on my RobotX project so that Bender can walk along. Bender's arms are animatronic and 3D printed with Arduino based electronics. I hope you enjoy Futurama Bender part 2 Check out my RobotX series for more of the mechanics and electronics.

    I actually think the arm movement is fairly accurate for Bender as is. His arms don't have any real joints. They're more like noodles that can bend at any point. I think this creates that illusion fairly well.

    I can't tell you how much I am loving this bender robot, it is turning out so well! I have one worry though, you haven't mentioned adding an antenna to him yet and bender needs his antenna! Keep up the amazing work!

    The arms work much better than I thought they would and are so much better than the three or four string approach as you can have different joints easily, well done! I'm really enjoying this build

  • @customfabrications
    @customfabrications 7 років тому +2

    It looks likes the only thing you need to do to fix the arm is to move the elbo servo to the other side of the black disk. That would give one more section of movement to the lower arm, and move the elbo further up. Great work though, it looks awesome.

    Fabric for the arm covering? I figured you'd use some sort of flexible construction tubing, like dust extraction tubing. That has the robot-like ridges on it.

    Please just don't forget about his antenna, he is not a full robot without it. Ideally make it with a small jammer built in.
    Anyway, great advance, he is really starting to take a shape. I like your approach for the arms - simple yet effective.

  • @MagnusDangerMagnus
    @MagnusDangerMagnus 7 років тому

    I've been wondering since the Bender build started how the hell he was going to do the noodley tube arm. I figured it was impossible and he'd have to go with heat-bent pool noodles or something. This servo driven segment design is just amazing. Well done James. Holy heck.

    • @MagnusDangerMagnus
      @MagnusDangerMagnus 7 років тому

      I guess you could go as far as putting an individually assigned servo in each segment if you wanted to go all-out and use a high-torque motor to rotate the arm where it meets the body. Either way, this bent nylon segmented servo design is just fantastic. I don't think I would ever have thought of doing it that way. Colour me impressed.

  • @Starky3000
    @Starky3000 7 років тому +7

    I believe Bender's arms should be a bit longer as from reference the arms look to be 1/3 of the way down the legs.
    I know this will probably cost you in time to create longer arms but it's just a suggestion.
    Loving the build as a whole.

    Perhaps (if it wouldn't be adding too much complexity) try adding rotation to the shoulder hubs so the arms would get an extra DOF (anywhere within a 170° radius)? That would be extra cool. And then Bender could point to his own arse - like someone here mentioned earlier. You probably wouldn't be able to get away with just a standard servo (perhaps a heavy-duty one, but then there's cost), the alternative would be using a DC motor with a gearbox attached (like those drill ones you've used in the leg joints) for added torque.

  • @HistoryUnwound

    I was thinking that you could have springs between the plates in the arms so they would return to a default position after being moved by the servos.
    I also was thinking that you could put in 4 strings in each arm that goes through each plate and then you have 4-directional movement. you would loose the joints but you would gain a whole lot more motion in the arms just like Bender in the series.

    why not put a third servo at the shoulder so he can raise his arms? Bender has to be able to wave his beer bottle around or he just ain't bender. Love this build!

  • @paulmichaud3230
    @paulmichaud3230 7 років тому

    The arms are kind of what I described in the comments on the previous Bender video. I think these you made need some work. A modified version would be disks, like you printed, with a flexible rod down the center of them rather than the nylon piece you used. Like I described before, put both servos at the shoulder with strings running down front/back and left/right sides. Each continuous servo has two reels with the strings wound in opposite directions. When the servo turns it pulls on one side while releasing the other side.
