I was at a friend's house in Hanau Germany in 1971. While there I heard this rich baritone voice in his TV. I turned to look and there was this massive looking man dressed as a Russian Cossack. When he finished singing, I turned back and he told me it was Ivan Rebroff. As we were talking, I heard a beautiful operatic soprano. I looked back and saw the same man singing. It turns out, he had a range of 5 octaves. I valve 2 albums os compilations of his music.
I search and I am very much interested by the English lyrics of this song "Ol' Man River" exactly as Ivan Rebroff sung them. I hope that someone will could help me. All my thanks in advance for your great kindness as well as for your precious help.
are you kidding me if that's the point then Ivan doesn't have one either I've never seen him with out a mic and I would rather have Sumner's voice any day. I'm a gospel bass my self and I'd rather hit that last key on the piano or an octave lower and use a mic to help my voice like I sometimes have to now on my good days then sing operatically even if they trained to sing like me or J.D. Sumner they still couldn't touch even me much less him however...
+Ellen Thumbs up for your statement that bigotry doesn't help. And certainly IR had a phantastic voice. There is just a tiny flaw in what you said: IR was not Russian but born and raised as a German citizen in Germany, who during his career consistently posed as a Russian. He claimed, but never proved, Russian ancestry. That does not diminish his acccomplishments.
Иван Ребров называл себя человеком мира!Мы очень мало о нём знаем.Можно говорить о его творчестве.Он превосходный вокалист,артист и Человек!Он знал себе цену,у него были мудрые наставники.Пусть звучит его голос!
love Sumner, but Sumners voice are not a great opera voice and will not be heard without a microphone, most can burp into a microphone and it sounds like a lion, but still I also love Sumner
The song is perfect as written, but there is still room for a singer to make it his own. This guy doesn't, IMO, because he plays with it too much. Best ever IMO would be Warfield and, strangely, Judy Garland.
I could go and train to fill the room and hit A0 so could most of the men I'm about to list. that proves the superiority of men with a voice type similar to that of J.D. Sumner: London Parris G0, ,Mike Holcomb F0,Arnold Hyles D1, Richard Sterban E1/D1?, David Hester D1, Barry White D1 even me A -1` to your singers.their good and I like their singing but their range is weaker than any of the men I mentioned.and no one Knows how low J.D. Sumner Could Go But he hit a D0 with out even trying.
These Rebroff songs have a little relevance to the real Russian folklore. And for singer Paul Rippert it would be better to sing Opera. But you don't understand anything in Opera, you have nothing to talk about
Sure. Paul Rippert had a chance to become a great opera singer but he preferred to change his name to Ivan Rebroff and to sing quasi-russian "fakelore"
Dear friend. One should first at least know his real name which was "Hans Rolf Rippert" - and not "Paul Rippert" ... As for his Russian ancestry I fully believe it was that because, without a sound knowledge of Russian he wouldn't have been able to sing such a wealth of songs in that language ... Just try for yourself and you will see that it's nearly impossible to sing in a language you do not know ...
@@frae5 Dear friend Paul is his father's name, my mistake. It's not interesting, that's what you believe. Someone's biography is not an object of faith, but an object of knowledge. Ripert had no Russian roots. His biography is well studied. There is a plaque on the school where he studied. Ripert sang in Russian with a strong accent. The ability to sing in several languages is the norm for an Opera singer. Placido Domingo, for example, also sang some operatic parts in Russian. So what? Ripert also sang in French and English. So what?
Personally that was one of my favorite songs by J.D. this is not Ivan best still a good song and very hard to understand do to his heavy accent but I do enjoy allot of his other work but leave it to ole J.D. on this one he was about an octave lower and easily understood by most even one of our German friends whose accent is about as thick as my voice is low .

I only discovered Ivan Rebroff this week! April of 2020! This amazing talent, though gone from this earth, is just being discovered by me!
I first heard him sing 'Im Tiefen Keller ' on vinyl many decades ago and have been hooked ever since.
Excellent, did not miss anything, very satisfying!

This is the most confusing comment section I've ever read.
bravo ivek
this fulla aint got nothing on Oscar Natzka :p
@IvoRobicPlatinum
Match this with Paul Robeson, not with Sinatra

this voice and this song brought together: could be a lot worse!
There is no justification for the vitriol in the comments about a great performance by Russian singer. Bigotry does not help. anyone.

Your forgetting the lowest and greatest J.D Sumner look him up this guy is good but no J.D Sumner.
As much as I love JD Sumner, I really didn't like his Ol' Man River
this guy isn't a basso profundo...

I'd like to hear them without a PA system.
Not an inch on Paul robeson no feeling or belief in the narrative he sings

Should have listened to the Sinatra version before doing this recording.
Takes a strong voiced black man to sing this with credibility. Paul Warfield or the one who sang it in the movie Show Boat. Now that was beautiful!
Paul Robeson.
Mary cage. Samuel Ramey did this wonderfully and he is as white as the get.
