It was a wonderful pleasure to watch you paint, Marc, and despite its issues I think the tree came out beautifully. I too struggle with not breaking up larger shapes enough, or overcompensating and breaking them up too much. Also with not being able to match the range of earth tones tree branches and trunks have. I was impressed by the range of values you achieved in the tree leaves' greens. Also the efficiency of your brush strokes is very impressive, as is your accuracy while holding the brushes so far from the bristles. My hands and arms shake with tremor so I have to hold them like pencils, fingers on the ferrules. I've actually been working on painting a tree in a deep forest for about a week now, and it is quite a challenge because the scene is very busy and far beyond my skill level, but I am using it as learning experience just like how you are approaching these plein air paintings. Also your voiceover is quite lovely and calming yet entertaining to listen to. I hope you'll do many more videos like this! By the way, I grew up in New Jersey! I am from the Teaneck and Elmwood Park areas in northern NJ. I did not know NJ is where you are located until now. I've lived in many places across the US and it was one of my favorites visually and weather wise. Do you enjoy it there? If you are able and interested, one of my favorite places in all of NJ was Garret Mountain, it has a scenic overlook with an amazing view and there is a beautiful woodland lake on the mountaintop as well. It would be perfect for you to paint at and I highly recommend it. You can find it at 8 Mountain Avenue, Woodland Park, NJ 07424

@@oxoniumgirl thank you for your kind comment, I appreciate reading you. Congratulations on getting your hands at painting en Plein Air. It is definitely overwhelming but for sure a great learning experience. It makes us grow more than we think. Nice to hear you are from North Jersey! Yes I am familiar with Garret Mountain, I think I have one or more Plein Air painting video on my channel recorded over there. An older video of me painting a tree is at that location. It is indeed a great location to practice plein air painting, so much different views to capture. Yes I will keep documenting my plein air progress and therefore will release more video like this. Please have a look at my latest video, released this Monday, it is another plein air painting 🙏🏻

Marc, really enjoyed this video and seeing your setup outside--really love your process and explanations. Maybe I can get up at 9 and go out soon, certainly once it's cooler. While I'm sure your critiques are valid for you, the painting was good and I liked some of the things you critiqued. For example there's enough variation in the greens on the right side along with enough dark shapes that there is depth and so I'm not sure adding more darks or breaking up the lights (since they are different values) is necessary. Really enjoying your work and learning so much from you

@@jttigera2 thank you for your comment and kind words 🙏🏻 yeah forgot to mention that one of the reason of going out early was also to avoid the heat 😅 highly recommended!
I am happy you like the painting! It’s very valuable for me to read your feedback, definitely helps! Thank you 🙏🏻

Marc, I don’t mind your positioning of the tree. It is slightly off center which is better than the middle and adds more interest to have a difference in negative spaces on the sides. If anything it could have been shifted even more that way. It was a great tree to study.

Hi Marc, i'm new to painting and wanted to say i have gained useful info from your videos. It would be great if you could give a little information on what mediums you use and how you use them. Also wanted to say you come across very clearly and i hope your channel continues to grow.

Thank you Craig for your kind words, I appreciate your feedback 🙏🏻 I am indeed planning to make a video focused on mediums and how I use them. I have videos planned to be released before that one so it will require some more patience, my apologies for the wait. But in short and in the meantime, I can tell you that I use mostly mineral spirits when painting outdoors, because it dries fast. In the studio, I use a mix of mineral spirit and linseed oil, around 50/50. Mistake to avoid is to use too much medium, as well as using too much linseed oil in the first layer. I will detail all this in my future video as well as covering almost all known mediums.
