Whilst you're waiting for cdi just clean up all the earths and connector blocks. Its going to be something silly like a broken wire in the loom. Great work and great diagnosis 👍. Ride steady and stay safe bud
I have a 1988 EX500 that is only firing on the right cylinder. I swapped the right coil over to the left and still no spark. So it's not the coil. Tried following the leads from the coil back and the wires are neatly wrapped under bad electrical tape. Looks to me like the lead wires change/spliced with other wires. What could the problem be? Thanks in advance.
It could be a carb issue that looks like a firing issue. Might be worth a good carb clean and balance if you get the chance. Could also be a valve issue or compression issue I'm guessing. But most likely spark or carbs. Hopefully you get it sorted. Charlie
@@motorcyclerescuer I took the plug out of the left side and grounded it to the frame no spark but the other side has spark. So I took the right side coil and hooked it up to the left no spark. I cleaned the carbs very well and synthetic them. Is there 2 pick up coils behind the stater cover?? Thanks in advance.
That's a good thought, if it's a parallel twin with a wasted spark then it will have one pick up, only. I will be surprised if it wasn't. Try sharing the wiring from the good coil on both, so splice into the good side and run that to the bad coil. See if you have spark on both and if it will run. Will only work on a parallel twin though. Keep me updated please. I'm curious. Thanks
Before you change the CDI, check the grey wire to the CDI from the ignition barrel. You're looking for 9V. If you have more then 9v you need to replace the ignition coil resistor.
@@motorcyclerescuer pop off the bottom of the ignition barrel, it's connected to the ACC and feeds the grey wire. It's not on the schematic because Kawasaki kept it a secret to prevent hot-wiring. The resistor is 1/4watt 100ohm. You should see 9v at the grey wire.
@@Mr_Jack_Shelby I've had this issue on a gsxr before but had no idea it was on these er5s. I'll order a resistor anyway. I'll pull the wiring off the barrel and look for the resistor inside. I assume I can splice in the new one anywhere in line?

You make everything seem so effortless. Amazing mate. Keep up the good work.
Lol it can look easy on camera but takes a few hours over all.
Great Job Nat
Yeh its a stunning paint job.
Love both channels these guys need more support ✌️
Thanks Friday. Appreciate the kind words buddy.
Great video Charlie, you are right Nat's a really nice guy. Loving the videos you are throwing out, and the content on facebook.
Thanks Andrew, appreciate the kind words. Hopefully some progress on this er5 soon.

Someone just mentioned that the ignition has a resistor in it and they are known for going wrong. So I've ordered some to give it a shot
@@motorcyclerescuer 10p resistor again ...nobody knows about them until it happens to them.
Exactly, it's crazy.

Great looking bike, pity you didn't have a working er5 to use as a diner bike, just to try out parts from it...
I may buy one. The new second hand cdi cost £100 ish so may be worth spending 4 or 500 on a donor bike.
Valves wouldn't cause a no spark condition? ?
No they wouldn't. If you were sure it was a spark related issue then you could rule out valves.

Oh really, thanks for the advice. Where is the coil resistor? Also should it show 9v with ignition on?
Thanks Jack.

@@motorcyclerescuer yes you can add the resistor inline, just make sure you've got 9v +-1.5v or the CDI won't fire
@@Mr_Jack_Shelby thanks Jack, going to look into that next weekend mate
