Thank you, Igor for the programme: “ Insights on the achievements of Myanmar’s Spring Revolution”. There was much praise for the achievements of the Spring Revolution from the Panel; and I am grateful to the panellists for their acknowledgements. However, I note a significant point was missing in the discussions. I believe this fight back by the peoples of Myanmar against the brutal and authoritative military dictatorship could be ended soon had the Chinese, who share a long border with Myanmar and who had invested much in Myanmar, would become pragmatic and realistic and support the peoples of Myanmar now.
China, in the recent situation in Myanmar, has always stated it wishes a stable and calm situation within Myanmar which is inductive to its continued investment projects. It definitely knows why the peoples of Myanmar have risen up to fight against the brutal fascist authoritarian military junta. It definitely knows the peoples of Myanmar objected to the Myanmar military officers staging a coup on 1 February 2020 and that the peoples of Myanmar dislike its military officers. However, in practice, China is supportive of the authoritarian military junta; and its recent statements made by its Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, clearly showed it rather have Myanmar’s military junta continue its rule in, perhaps, a different form or with a different set of personnel. It, China rather have a puppet authoritarian regime in Myanmar which is indebted to China than accept the wishes of the peoples of Myanmar to remove the military from politics, remove the authoritarian government and replace them with a federal democratic form of governance in Myanmar. There had been scant contact with the National Unity Government which the people wholeheartedly supports.
China, in essence, is scheming to go against the wishes of the peoples of Myanmar; have “stable and calm” situation forced in Myanmar by virtue of its puppet military oppressing the peoples for it, China, to continue its “investment” projects. China know by this means the peoples of Myanmar will bear hatred towards itself, but, as above aims to “forge” “cordial relations” by the use of terror upon the people by the Myanmar military. China wants the Myanmar military to continue its dominance.
China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has recently stated it does not want any other external bodies entering Myanmar’s affairs and that it wanted ASEAN to continue to be the sole lead in solving Myanmar’s problems. It is treating Myanmar as if it already owns Myanmar! It knows China easily influences ASEAN to bend to its will.
In my opinion, China, in spite of knowing what is the easiest way to solve Myanmar’s problems and have cordial relations with the peoples of Myanmar, is definitely and deliberately choosing to go against the wishes, hopes and aspirations of the peoples of Myanmar for its own selfish, self centered authoritarian gains.
