    Daryl, Sorry if this is out of place, but this is my first post (on any site, ever). I lived 10 miles form Echo Canyon until I was 17. Everyday, I saw the Park City local that left the Evanston sub at Echo. It had 2-3 GP9s to retrieve Silver and potash from the Park City (P.C.) mines. (Before P.C. became the huge ski area.) When planning my layout I decided that the P.C. branch didn't have enough possibilities for industry, so having driven the route many times, I decided on the Evanston Sub from Evanston to Taggert. This was several years before your first video three years ago. I was unable to do more than plan until last year because of health issues. In my planning, one of my focus areas was Devils Slide. When I was a 13 year old Boy Scout, I went through the then Ideal Portland Cement plant. So, when I saw you were changing from the Geneva sub to Evanston, I was really excited. I have especially been waiting to see how you handled the 3.5 miles from the 1000 mile tree to Taggert part of the line. Well Done! Although my layout is only 18' X 13', you have given me some good ideas on how to handle the subdivision on my layout. Best of luck to you and Thanks again.

    Looking great!!!
    Mini prints has peacocks, Cripplebush valley models makes really nice rubber rocks in a variety of rock types. They aren't cheap, but you don't need that much of them. They look great, can be painted to match your local scenery, and are thinner than plaster rock models.

    I’ve watched your channel for years even back when you did N scale! I was dormant from the hobby for a few years as the funds just weren’t there but I really wanted to start sharing what I believe is under coveraged which is the Texas railfan scene and with my main layout stuck without a new system I opted to build a smaller industrial park layout to learn from until I get back to my main. Your videos and layout has always been grade A and you’ve made soooo much progress since the last time I viewed your layout updates. I sure miss living in Ogden…railroading in Utah is beautiful, although I’d argue being that I feel Texas is really under coveraged especially in the UA-cam community it’s flat open range camera angle ability’s and having every class one end up down here makes it easy and a lot of fun to railfan. I hope to one day be back in Utah and when I do boy will it be a multi day railfan trip. Glad you’re keeping the layout going and still top notch!

      Sounds great. Have fun with the layouts. We lived in Austin in the 80s and railfaned the SP a lot. Saw my fist stack train there.

      @@EvanstonSub did you ever railfan or film bergstrom spur being serviced? I made it into a modular layout at one point but just didn’t have the room to continue, but Austin’s just sad when it comes to rail served industries there isn’t much at all anymore. To think downtown once had a large yard and roundhouse and station to now it’s just Amtraks tiny little worn out station Is a bummer. I tend to rail from north Austin-Taylor, manor, Giddings, or San Antonio-Austin as I know several good spots for trestle crossings with solid open camera angle spots for the perfect catch. I’ve been trying to stay very consistent with my uploads recently and yesterday after driving nearly 200 miles and chasing big boy at the same time the variety of rail services was amazing, just wish I’d known how pixelated a lot of it ended up… I do railfan compilations, and layout updates but would love to add on rail sims as something else to complete my tiny little channel that’s growing and beyond thankful of. Thanks for replying!

      We always went out of town to railfan. Saw a lot of mopac too. That's how I got into the UP as both were swallowed up.

      @@EvanstonSub see I’m a late 90’s kid so unfortunately I didn’t get to experience the mopac despite all the rail from my home towns county were mopac, only ever remember seeing mopac geeps at the Dow chemical plant which eventually were repainted. Would’ve been awesome to see mopac running on the Austin sub, or the gulf eagle running down the brownie line,

    You are building the most scenic portion that combines the UP, I-80, and I-84 that I know of IMHO. That's saying a lot, when you stop and think about it. Driving through Echo and Weber Canyons is gorgeous in September with all the aspens yellow.

      @@EvanstonSub In Chile we have earthquakes that affect the layout, generating problems in the tracks that are difficult to solve because in this country the hobby is still in the pre-World War II era and the old people think that one has Markling trains and the modern ones think that they are Life Like. I am a rare case with a layout that is 26 years old and an earthquake in the middle. You have important temperature changes that produce expansions and contractions that you know we do not have but generate similar effects. Surely in the future you will begin to suffer like me.

  • @Coal_Train
    @Coal_Train Місяць тому +6

    why not just do one of the Devils slide razorbacks and place it so the other one is on the mirror. Since the mirror would be
    reflecting the backside of the other razorback, it could be painted differently and would appear slightly different. Proper painting would enhance that effect. It could be really a neat way to pull it off. I hope the cutoff at Granger will feature at least a pair
    of tracks for staging trains so one could come in with one waiting to enter the scene.

    • @andygerber4624
      @andygerber4624 Місяць тому +2

      I agree, use the mirror to your Advantage. Build the slide closer to the mirror and have one side painted different from the other side. It will help from having 2 slides reflecting in the mirror where you have it now and easier with putting scenery in for you..... trying to help, just my opinion.... sometimes you need a second set of eyes to get a different view on things..... Thanks for sharing the video !!!

    • @ericcoughlan
      @ericcoughlan Місяць тому

      I agree with coal_train and andy. I was going to suggest that you use some Sculptamold for the rock formation, carving the rocks once it has set - should take up less room that rock moulds, but reading the suggestion of using the mirror as the centre line of the slide makes great sense, and saves a lot of work trying to hide the reflection.

      The mirror is not big enough for this since the mountain would need to slope away from the road. I can't use a bigger mirror since that side is right up against the wall.

    Darryl, your doing great! The devil slide that you've talked about for a while is taking shape fast!! The use of the plywood for the slide is a great idea! I can see that it is very close to the correctness. Have driven through that area multiple times, can't wait to see the final event.

    Something that might work easier for you and give texture would be to use ceiling tiles on edge to create your devils slide affect. You’ll be able to get texture if you layer and chip at the ceiling tiles. Just a thought.
