- Steve Rothery, ever present member of Marillion, shares his thoughts on former bandmate Fish, the bands incredible fans and what we can expect from the new Marillion album due for release in February 2022!
Steve Rothery was a big factor in the success of Marillion. His playing style was perfect for them, and he has that masterful feel for a song, that expands it from great to brilliant! He is one of my all time favourite guitarists!!
This man is genius. I'm still glowing from the gig in Cardiff last night and as Mr.Rothery does every time, his lead break in Easter moved me to tears. He got me yet again. Damn him 🤘👏👌💕
Easter gets me all the time. Beautiful.
We're the greatest fans because Marillion is the best band! A better way of life. Together.
But only with fish. Sorry!🙋♀️🙋♂️😻
I still follow the band religiously, but 80's Marillion is my childhood and Fish is my personal hero...... one of the greatest music poets in history
I totally agree, there was no Marillon for me after Fish’s departure.
@@emmacresswell7012 I certainly didn't say that

Never have I felt so attached to a band’s music,I’m just blown away by their sound, performance and love for the fans..thank you guys ..
As a 40 year Marillion fan, all I can say is, I pray it never ends. I was at the Philly show when they were having PA issues, we sang our hearts out that night. A memorable show.
This man is the worlds best gitaarplayer, he makes me cry when he plays the guitar. Fan sinds the beginning till now. Still going strong playing the best ever. Love Marillion in the fish years and even more today.
Absolutely, he is just brilliant although I also think Steve Hackett is fantastic.
He makes me cry too. Weird.
Fellow crier here! 😂😂😂
When I first heard "He Knows You Know" back in the early 80s I was blown away! What a great band! Charting the single and Garden Party also Hooked me bad. Long live Marillion
yes, the 80's became sort of a "dead end" for vast majority of those classic 70's prog bands, so it was obvious that in order to survive, the genre needs to reinvent itself...... that's where Marillion stepped in and started carrying the flag throughout the 80's and even entered the mainstream spotlight(which is extremely rare for a prog band)...... offcourse they influenced not only other Neo-Prog bands, but even bands from other prog genres...... we are blessed these guys still produce new music
I saw them in Caracas, Venezuela in October 1992. Excellent band, Steve is a great singer and performer. Their music is a jewel for all of us.
Top drawer band filled with musicians of the highest calibre
Agree that there is such a strong and loyal fan base. I claim myself in my ever-loving heart for that fan base. I had just gotten out of high school when I heard Kayleigh on the radio. I thought it was Phil Collins. I searched and searched and finally found out it was Marillion. A few months later I had joined the US Navy and reported to my ship, an aircraft carrier. They had two tiny onboard stores, each no bigger than a small walk-in closet. And in one of them - I kid you not - I found a cassette tape of Clutching at Straws. I soon did my first Mediterranean cruise of six months. After my third listening, I was hooked. Marillion took me to Italy, France, Spain, Egypt, Israel, and Greece. To this day many of these songs like so many others in the Marillion catalogue bring tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Were I ever to meet any of these musicians, I would offer my profound gratitude for giving me, like many others I'm sure, such wonderful music. Thank you sincerely, gentlemen.
This band literally has made the best music I have ever heard. Thanks for conducting this IV
I am one of the great fans. Really looking forward to the new album release.
I remember 1988...I was 15 came back from school and there suddenly I saw a concert from Berlin DDR TV (I lived in Poland), my TV was B&W but I had a video recorder at the time. I recorded this concert and it was with me for many years. Later I copied it to DVD and...later it was gone. After more than 30 years I still remember it. I will never forget...
Marillion are quite simply the best band in the world. They just go from strength to strength, which is incredible considering how long they've been doing this.
I met Marillion with '' Season's End'' 30 years ago in 1992 :) Still listenin' those songs as that kid bought that cassette :) We love you Steve!
I saw H’s first tour with the band at an outdoor venue next to a runway of the Buffalo airport. The music was awesome! Cheers to you all these years later!
Misplaced Childhood was my first Marillion album. A bloke used to come around the pub every Sunday afternoon with crates of vinyl and not knowing the band, I bought it for 50p and chose it based solely on the album art, thankfully I loved the album. Got Script For A Jester's Tear next followed by Seasons End. As much as I loved Misplaced Childhood, Script and Seasons End fast became my two equal favourites, yet Misplaced Childhood still holds a special place in my heart.
I showed it to my girlfriend and she loved it! Man...I still have the CD...gonna put it right now on....by the way my girlfriend is still my wife...after 30 years :-)
@@shyster717 Congrats on the 30 years :)
Kayleigh was not my introduction to the band, but I imagine it was for many, especially here in the US. Steve is absolutely one of my favorite guitarists.
I can happily exclude my American ass from that group! I walked into a Long Island record shop in 1984 that was playing the just released Fugazi album [UK import]. My first thought was "shit, Peter is back with Genesis." Listened a bit and I walked over to the counter and asked what I was hearing. Bought the album on the spot. In June of that year I had the privilege of seeing them at the Ritz in NYC in front of an audience of 30, maybe 40 people. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
I wish 2022 will coming soon ! ; )
We shouldn't wish time away but an impending new Marillion album is one reason to do so! Always great to hear the wonderful Mr. Rothery.
The new album.is cool !.😊
Soulful guitar play, the best!
Greatest guitarist.
Why isn’t Marillion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?… it’s an Avant-Garde group, creator of a style, and simply great
Steve Rothery and Fish matchless.
I've been a fan of both sides of the coin. Fish and Hogarth. Much success.
Thanks music. Good. Music

Welcome aboard the classic rock interviews train!
@@VRPRocks thnx 4 such a speedy reply. i was recommended the video with Rod Argent (got his autograph). when i had a little look of your chan, i saw this video. a band that i've seen, at least, 15x with Mr.H. seen Fish only once as a solo artist. as a gift to you, can i draw you to my 'W' playlist and listen to the outro of 'frightened children' by White Lightning ? a super, short-lived band that Tommy Vance played on his rock show. if you haven't heard it, do give it a listen 🤝
@@lie188 I absolutely will check it out! I used to love listening to and watching Tommy Vance, one of the best voices in the business! His Friday Rock Show was an appointment not to miss!
The emperor!!!
I’ve tried and tried but since Holidays in Eden I just can’t get into them. And I was at The Garden Party in Milton Keynes too!
Fish lost when he left Marillion and Marillion lost when Fish left…I do admire how Marillion went on without Fish…but personally there was a brilliant chemistry musically and lyrically with Fish….I also feel Fish thought he could be another Peter Gabriel …he’s never said this in an interview, but I do think the Marillion mismanagement factor and he feeling he could do it on his own played a big factor.
@dgcmusi hard to argue with any of what you've said!
watch the lizard!
I was a huge Marillion fan back in the day, Clutching at Straws is likely the greatest concept album I've ever heard, maybe Amused to Death was better, but thats an album that just leaves you exhausted from the musical and lyrical creativity, its what makes a 'band' so much better than the sum of its parts. I listened to Seasons End and A Wilderness of Mirrors and its sort of like listening to genesis and peter gabriel, but not quite that level. I kind of brushed them off until Brave, which was a pretty heavy duty album as well, but not quite to the old level. I really haven't listened to them since, I seem to remember reading they were so broke at one point they were staying with fans on a tour or something, maybe that was gossip but I' would have offered them a place to crash. THis was the keyboardist right? I think I remember him saying that he couldn't keep playing keyboards in later years like he did on early albums, which I thought was too bad because for a keyboarist it was right up there with all the best prog guys.
Steve Rothery is the guitarist, actually, and one of the best in the biz.
Ha ha, you were obviously never a “huge fan” if you don’t know this is their incredible guitarist.
@@aardvarkmindshank Dude, the band is over forty years old. I guess you don't know what past tense means. If you have that little going on in your life that you remember the names of guitarists of bands you listened to in high school, well, nuff said. Althougb i was never a fan of their NAMES. The only place I ever remember even hearing them was during the live song on 'bsides themselves' where they are introduced. If you want to get into arguments about the specific makeup of a 'fan', thats your business, have fun.
I only like Marillion, only in Fish era
A lot of people share this opinion. Steve Hogarth did bring a different side to the band though, i like both.
AFTER THE 4TH ALBUM THEY WENT ELEVATOR MUSIC
You obviously haven't listened to them or travel in some fantastic lifts. They are a different group. Before despite Fish being the last to the party he sheer presence overtook the band and they ended up being in his shadow almost his backing band. Today I was listening to The Thieving Magpie, the the final live set with Fish however I have been also listening to Seasons End and Brave and An Hour Before It's Dark. The latest album is sheer brilliance and knocks anything and everything they've done before completely out of the park. As much as I love Seasons End, Brave, FEAR et al the new album is on another level and certainly blows ANYTHING the Fish era Marillion ever achieved.
@@clansome Everyone can be wrong. But being so hugely wrong is unexplainable. I love 3-4 albums from H era but most of them are just plain boring for me. To much Steve H, not enough of Steve R. Seen them live on Marillion Weekend Łódź april last year. 3 days, 3 sets. 1st day brought me to tears (Easter), second day still enjoyable and third day... I couldn't believe it was Marillion. Utter crap for me, couldn't wait the end of the gig so we could go to the pub
I've tried to like them post Fish. It's a struggle.
The band is really not the same without Fish....
it's better now, by far!
@@mariosancho592 you are wrong
@@ianliverpool6623 sorry but i am not wrong. Not for me.
Fish only made 4 albums
@@mariosancho592 Not
Marillions ran out when Fish left.
Original and intelligent comment my friend, well done. Geez…
I much preferred the Fish era. Their front man now looks and sings like a wizard from Harry Potter. You know the one I mean ;)
always with the fish....jeez
The band lost it completely after Happiness is the road
To be honest...I lost interest in Marillion after Fish has left....and that comes from a Fish era hard core fan. I still listen to the Fish era albums every week. Steve is a horrible singer.
Technically speaking, Steve is a better vocalist than Fish. You obviously prefer Fish, and that's fine. But to say Steve is a horrible singer is flat out wrong.
The sound of the band changed for the worse . Seasons End is good because the music was written for Fish . H now writes music for the band and they sound soft . FEAR is a good record as is Brave and some of Marbles but there’s too much filler.Maybe the album’s are too long , they were just over 45 mins with Fish . All killer no filler .
@@vauxspirit1 Fish could NEVER have sung Seasons End with the feeling H does, he just didn't have the passion in his voice imo. I've been comparing them (by accident not design) and H's lyrics are so much better. It's like comparing the 5 stages of Genesis, 2 was better than 1, 3 was better than 4 and both 2 and 3 were better than 5: hoever was 2 better than 3 or vice versa. 50 years later I still cannot decide which I prefer except that they are both great but different same with Fish/H era Marillion. Also you have proved my point that the group had become Fish's backing Musicians even though they wrote the music. Today they are a fully functioning integrated group, perhaps that is why Fish only lasted 7 years (81 to 88), whereas H has been with the group for 33 years (89 to present).
@@clansome "No passion in Fish' voice". Funny one. Have you ever seen Marillion's early live appearances? Hogarth is a great singer - it's obvious for me. But as great he can be, often he gets to "theatretical" and irritating for me. I agree withe Vaux Spirit, that most of the albums with him in the band are dragged over. To many fillers and H groaning.
@@becin2107 Fish was a presence but I don't think he was that good a singer, h is the opposite. We'll just have to agree to disagree. That said I have seen the set list for the third night in Lodz and that certainly wouldn't have been my ideal choice bar a few tracks !
Fish proved how wrong he was to leave by falling flatter on his face commercially than the group did. They BOTH suffered wretchedly at the hands of the record companies. I recall a quote from Pete (I think) who said that "if they HAD stayed together then, they wouldn't be together now."
I do love Season's End and sometimes wonder how it would have sounded if Fish was still with them, but then I listen to it again and thank God that he wasn't.
Damn, I got a $100 parking ticket in Hollywood, CA waiting for Ian Mosley to get back from some hamburger joint in order to get my MARBLES shirt autographed by ALL members of Marillion, but I have to admit...it was worth it!!!
