Worm pumps are a highly efficient approach to gathering bait, providing they are set up and maintained properly. Here bait gatherer Eddie Wilson demonstrates his set and customising procedures.
Thank you for a brilliant and concise video Dave and Eddie. You covered everything. Returning soon to my hometown of Fleetwood, back to the sea, fishing, and no more backbreaking fork digging for bait. Thanks again! Vert best wishes. Tony
What a difference a washer makes ! I have one of those no-name £30 pumps and was on the verge of ditching it and shelling out for an Alvey as my results have been poor - but "don't be hasty" said a little miser on my shoulder "give the home made silicone washers a try". Wow ! huge improvement - it really works - no need to change my pump now - worms galore. Thanks for a really great video.
Somewhat ironically, my £30 pump did work well with the silicone washers but it fell to bits after one season of pumping lug and I have replaced it with an Alvey after all. Still use and swear by the home brew silicone washers though as the Alvey needs them too - even the washers that come with the Alvey are pants so silicone still rules.
@pokermiller1 You can't pump blowlug in the same way. Blacklug make vertical burrows which the pump can suck them out of. Blowlug make 'U' shaped burrows, and unfortunately, the suction of the pump will not work around bends. Hope this helps Regards Phill
Difficult because space here limited. Blow lug smaller and mid shore. Black very big, lower shore, and not all beaches. The burrows are the main give away - U shaped for blow and vertical burrows for black. Even scientists confused them until recent DNA studies. When handling black, you get yellow iodine staining on the hands. Black always self gut when removed from sand - blow lug don't. Hope this helps. Phill
It just shows you I thought what can this chap teach me been at it for years. But some excellent tips especially the silicon seal top job great vid. Bit stingy on the packs six in a pack???
I dont know if we have Blacklug in Australia but it look disguesstng lol. well I Pump Yabbies here in Aus, and I Will defenatly try the celicon Idea, Thanks alot mate.
Hi thanks for your video, I made the silicone washer but I find it very hard to move the shaft because it creates a perfect seal inside the cylinder now I'm not sure if it requires a lubricant so it can slide easily, just a little tension on the wing nut and it locks hard and if I loosen it it slides OK but not enough suction. Please need your opinion thanks
I have to ask, looked everywhere online and cannot find a answer. I am wondering how to visualy tell the difference between black and blow lug. I know the difference in the casts/holes but cannot tell the worms appart looking at them. Any tell tale tips? thanks
I also have a bait pump but it only sucks up when it is up right angle I've tried to do it like in eddies video but it wont suck up I've used it 2 times now and no worms what is wrong please help or its back to the fork.
Hello Phill, great video, very informative and you're a natural on camera! ...May I ask please, how did you make your silicone washer? For example, did you inject an inch thick layer all in one go or did you do it in layers, allowing each layer to dry first? ...I tried it all in one go but found that it stayed goo in the middle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Rob.
hi my partner has a slim bait pump when we go pumping his bait pump keeps going lose and then tight he does get worms but we have to keep tightening the pump what is going wrong pleases help thanks.
Ive been studying this for the past 5 years, and it seems to me that the man in the background isn't actually there, he only shows in video footage, just lurking in the background like patrick swayze from Ghost.

I've always salted my blacks as just freezing them makes them really soft and crabs strip them a lot quicker. Fresh is always best though.
