Exactly. He and Jordan both benefited from having each other. It took pressure off of both of them. Pippen took pressure off Jordan on defense and some of the offense, Jordan could carry the load and take defensive focus off of Pippen. But that’s why most teams NEED a duo of good players to go deep in the playoffs and often a very good 3rd option to create space and reduce load on each player. A great player can carry a team most nights. But not when in a seven game series and teams lock in on them.

If Lebron and Kobe played against Pippen and Jordan it would easily be won by Kobe and brown because Pippen is good. But he’s the miss match. Even if “hypothetically” Jordan was better than born by 2%. Kobe is better than Pippen by 10-15% and they would try to force the ball to Pippen. Basketball is usually played in a team game of find the mismatch. Exploit it.

@@cashflodigitalsportsnetwork Wow I wonder why? Maybe it is because he only played 3 seasons without Pippen, and fractured his leg in one of them, oh and he was a rookie in one of those seasons. But you know, let's ignore the fact that he he was even in the playoffs at all in those seasons.
Oh and what about the fact that he faced the Bucks with 2x DPOY player Sidney Moncrief in his rookie season and got a win, came back from a leg injury in '86 and scored 63 against the Celtics and averaged 46.7 points per game in that series, against a team universally agreed upon as a top 3-5 team all time. Also faced the '87 version of that team, you know which was only a little worse than that '86 version.
Now let't talk about 1988 and 1989 when Scottie was there. They got to the 2nd round and the Eastern Conference Finals. So Scottie must have really made an immediate impact. I guess 5 ppg and 10 ppg was really what MJ needed to finally start winning. Scottie became important from 1990 onwards, but looking at the 85-89 Bulls MJ's record in the playoffs is 14-23, granted that isn't great but it specifically before Pippen broke out it was 13-14, showing a trend of upward success.
If people are giving you blank stares they must be dumber than you because that argument is so weak it should've been erased from existence. Hell it's not even an argument, just a ploy based on half-truths and omissions of context to create a story.

Scottie Pippen is a near ideal player 2 when building a roster. However, His half court offense is average. With MJ, Kobe, or any ball dominant player it's not a deal breaker. His instincts and tools on defense give you a chance to get out and run. He was a terrific passer with good court vision that helped the bulls thrive on the break. MJ is awesome but having a running mate who can competently run the break with you is understated. Scottie was atrociously underpaid and undervalued by those outside of the bulls (and Jerry Krause).
Scottie has no buisness cracking the top 25 all time because his half court offense wasn't always there. Put him in today's era and he'd be towards the top of talent as well for what he does great

Snottie Picken is like a poor man's small forward version of KG. A supremely talented swiss army knife of a player who can do a little bit of everything on both ends of the floor. Every elite team can utilize players like this, but you don't want them as your first option guy on offense. They just aren't cut out for it. KG was better in this regard, but he's the closest comp I could come up with as far as top 50 players go. People like to play the "what if" game with Scottie because of 94, but it's been shown throughout his career that his scoring doesn't scale up well. He was at his absolute apex that season, and his efficiency took a huge hit when defenses tightened up in the playoffs. The shortened 3pt line the next few seasons made him look a little better than he was. There's a reason he hovered around 18ppg most of his career, and it wasn't Michael Jordan holding him back. He's one of those rare players that could be the best player on a championship team, but they wouldn't be a championship team if he was their best scorer.

Pippen let Jordan focus on getting buckets and not have to be the only guy running the offense

Scottie Pippen was like 90s Paul George (worse on offense, better at most other things). Like, if you build a team around him that team will go deep into the playoffs but you know they never have a real chance at winning the championship(and people will freak out over a small sample size and claim they could have a led the team to a championship). Also it's not really an insult when people say Scottie couldn't lead a team. I believe only 12 or 13 players in nba history have the capability to play in era and still lead a team to the championship.

  • @pattrell5257
    @pattrell5257 10 місяців тому

This is a very fair critique. I'd add that offensively he was a very streaky shueter that was limited to athletic plays and passing when his jumper was off(most of the time)! In addition, he was not a tough shaht maker, either. Therefore, it was not hard to shut him down defensively. FOR EXAMPLE: In those games against the Rockets from 90-93, where the Rockets dominated these very, very good-great Bulls teams, Pippen was MIA offensively!
Jordan needed somebody to be a 2nd offensive leader(for some reason, Pip wants credit for that), but Jordan had low games for Jordan(22-35[35 only once]) and Pippen did SQUAT! I don't think he got 20 in the series once and most of the time was well below that. Pippen could average around 20 based on his athleticism and catching timely passes to score off of those, but he could be certainly shut down by a lot of players.
And, he was definitely one of the best defenders that the Bulls ever had! However, in addition to his offensive woes, he was not this unapproachable defender as he made to be, either. Speedy and shifty players could be unguardable by Pippen(esp. if these players were small and expert dribblers). I would trust him on someone like Durant, Magic Johnson, Lebron, Harden, Barkley, etc, but Iverson, Curry, Francis, Hill, Kobe, prime Jordan, etc. I would not...I THINK HE USED TO BE OVERRATED(rated too highly), BUT NOW IT'S ABOUT RIGHT!

As a lifelong Detroit Pistons fan, it hurts to give any credit to The Sidekick. But Scottie is the best Number 2 option of all time, he was able to compliment Jordan so well and it's why that duo was so good; but he's not a Number 1 option and that's okay. Not everybody is meant to sing lead, some people are Glayds Knight and some are The Pips.

Most importantly, we have seen a lot out of Pippen. He didn't have many career altering injuries, he played as 2nd option for the most part and because of Jordan retirement we saw what he could do as 1st option (and he didn't do much, had good stats and didn't do much in playoffs just like you said) and later in his career in Portland and Houston. He is a clear cut hof, top50 player in history (on lower end of that list nowadays) and one of the best 2nd options ever. And that's it. He is rated properly by most of community, there isn't many "what ifs" about his career (especially injury related).

About the 1993-94 season, you’re overlooking the fact that Scottie played most of his career as a second option he wasn’t used to being the first option and struggled being defended like a first option. I think if he played longer as a first option he would have been better later on. People say Scottie wouldn’t be the player he was without Jordan or he wouldn’t even be an all-star when in fact if you look at there college stats Scottie projected to be the better player. Also I’m not saying Scottie was going to be the better player if he wasn’t traded to the bulls, I’m just saying he never had the chance to prove he could have been better.

However he's need been underrated by the people. People say that MJ made him, but they don't usually say that he's not top 50 because of that, they are simply foolishly discrediting the talent and work ethic he had. However, he was recognised as a TOP 50 player of ALL TIME, before he had even played a decade in the NBA. Rebounding and interior defense especially at the power forward position were the only reason they struggled. but the bulls were still in the sixth seed when Jordan came back and was just 3 games out of the fifth seed and was ahead of the Hawks 32/32 by 1 1/2 games and the nets were the eight seed with a 26/39 record when Jordan came back. The Celtics finished with the eight seed with a 35 and 47 record. Pippen was leading the bulls in every team category and the bulls were going to make the playoffs if Jordan don't come back. I believe the bulls would have won 42 to 45 games if Jordan don't come back and and stay in the sixth seed or possibly catch the Cavs who were the fifth seed with a 36/27 record.

Yeah he is, that dude is top 20 all-time. The most versatile player in league history and balancer of the bulls. On his own he was a top 2 player in the league and MVP candidate. He's often chopped down because he played alongside MJ, but those of its ship really watch the game know how sensational and instrumental he was.

Versatile wnd definitely great but more a jack of all trades that was good at a lot but not the best except maybe defender at the 3.

I hate when people say scotties half court game was average/limited and love to leave out the fact that we are talking about among the GREATEST scorers of ALL TIME! like dude AVERAGE is like jabari parkers 14ppg last season or reggie jacksons 12ppg year now! WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SCOTTIE PIPPENS SCORING ABILITY WHEN COMPARING IT TO DUDES LIKE JORDAN AND TMAC AND OTHER GUYS WHO WERE A BUCKET EVERY TIME THEY TOUCHED THE BALL! In the year where he was the primary scorer after jordan retired he finished with 24 ppg off 50% shooting with an all star mvp and top 3 in mvp voting and a 55 win record with a trash squad where steve kerr and tony kukoch were the 2nd and third option! Pippen is an all time great scorer who had a killer mid range post game albiet not as effective as jordans! But to say he is a average half court scorer is disrespectful unless your talking about compared to the other all time greats

Not a trash squad. He still has all the important players from the first threepeat and most from the second. Better supporting cast than the first threepeat. Grant, Armstrong, Kukoc were the best options

@@ItsHappyHourArchived Didn't say great. Said it wasn't trash. Scottie was a great jack of all trades sort of guy. He wasn't a great scorer or midrange scorer. He was a mediocre one. He was just ok in a halfcourt offense. During the second threepeat playoffs,he wasn't even the primary focus of the defense and averaged 17 on 41 percent. Wasn't efficient in ,94 against the Knicks either. He wasn't even the best perimeter scorer outside Jordan in his own time, let alone all time

These are all fair points, and I don't think prime Pippen could be the #1 option on a championship team. Maybe it's best all-around player, but you'd still need some scoring specialist beside him and a hell of a squad.
The one quibble I'd have is that the '95 Bulls weren't a good team and he was having an outstanding year leading the team in points, assists, boards, steals and blocks at one point well into the season. You left that part out. He was the only reason they were above .500 when Mike got back. And Mike couldn't carry that team with Pippen anywhere until they got more help.
The reason that us "old heads" tend to say Pippen is underrated is that Jordan was such a phenomenon. Your generation can't understand it. Kobe, Brady, Manning, even Lebron are absolutely nothing in terms of cultural impact. MJ was so much bigger than basketball it's unimaginable. There were literally billions of casual fans worldwide who talked like Mike carried a bunch of dead fish to the title year after year. Your dad was a Bulls fan. He knew better. So did real fans then, but the whole world was in absolute awe of Jordan. The mere suggestion that he got a lot of help was laughed aside in a way that can't be done today and it was disparaging, especially to Pippen. History has been much kinder to Pippen than contemporary opinion.

The owner and Scottie's own agents told him not to sign it. Also, lost in the debate is the fact the new CBA in '95 prevented player's contracts from being immediately re-negotiated and eliminated balloon payments tacking on $ at the end of a contract. Scottie literally could not get a raise or new contract when he asked for it in '95 and '96, which MJ likely realized. Hence the selfish comment.
