That’s my dilemma. Ordered both M1 Pro and 15 Air spec’d to 16/512. Pro is about $100 less. As a casual user the Pro’s extra processing power would be wasted on me but I still want that display, sound and extra ports I may use. But the 15 offers a bigger display and better battery life. Still can’t decide.
You never know how much power you might need in the future even if you think you won’t. I made this mistake while ago and once my priorities changed I hit the performance sealing very quickly.
Stick with the pro. The 15 inch has that awful backlight bleed when watching dark content. It's atrocious. Shame on apple for using such a shitty LCD panel for their airs.
Planning to get the M1 Pro 14, but worried about the longevity regarding software support. I will be using it for the next 4-5 years and want the latest software for the time I will be using it. Should I go for the m2 air 15 inch or M1 Pro 14?
Great video! I have the 16GB/1TB 14in M1 Pro and have no complaints, but would definitely look at a 13in Air next time with a unified memory upgrade. The SD reader I have now is extremely useful for Lightroom, but I am not sure it wouldn’t be worth the additional weight the rest of the time.
@@reyanreyanreyan I’ve had the machine 2.5 years, and it still feels just a fresh and fast as when new. I’d maybe get more RAM now, but only for future proofing.
when the MBA 15” was released…I really wanted to replace it with the MBP M1 14”….but I was still unsure…then I saw reviews from various UA-cam videos…but I still doubted…then I tried to lower the quality of the refresh rate on my MBP to 60hz….and in the end I didn't buy the 15” MBA…because my eyes weren't used to it…and that was just one of the reasons that encouraged me not to switch to the 15” MBA. ..but everyone has different thoughts
14" M1 MBP for the ports and the memory. I have 2 external monitors (tb + HDMI) and 1 external raid (for time machine backups) continuously connected. I run Parallels in full screen on one of the monitors and I can give it 8gb and run Mac and Windows applications simultaneously for work without any problems.
The future M3 Macbook air 15 will totally out perform the 14" but that beautiful screen, the extra ports and better speakers, would be my choice at a heavily discounted price.
Only specked as a 16gb/512+ though. Then you are back to square one in terms of cost/performance. We will be looking back to the 2021 14 MBP as a legendary laptop in ten years time.
I got the 13.6 inch M2 MacBook Air with 16 gigs of ram memory, and 512 SSD storage, but, kept the 8 core GPU. After comparing the 15 inch Air with the 13.6 Air, I think sound is pretty much the same, except 15 Air is louder. Yes the 14 pro versions do have better sound and screen resolution. I was really interested in the 14 inch M2 Pro cause I'm used to high end Windows desktops. Luckily my friend/lawyer brought me down to earth. He said you don't have a website anymore building webpages, so you don't need the pro MacBook, I'm getting you the Air. I'm glad he did, with the upgraded configurations, it is really great. I like that it is very lightweight and portable, much lighter than the 15 inch. After my Mac class at Soho Apple Store in NYC, I put my 13.6 Air in my crossbody laptop briefcase. I was able to walk around NYC with no strain on my shoulders. Best of all, I'm not tide to a desk, and I'm able to sit in my couch with legs on my chaise with laptop on my lap. The Pros are great if. you are keeping them in your house, but for travel the Air is better. Especially the 13.6 Air for students, and teachers lugging a laptop back and forth to school. My opinion, you should for future proofing, get the 16 gigs of ram, and 512 SSD storage. The base model can be slower with 256 storage, and you can use ram very quickly. If you're a pro video editor, photo editor, or graphic designer, then the pro models are more for you. This is my first laptop, and I love it, very user friendly. Great video, to help people decide which is best. Since my last Dell desktop with Windows 7 pro with 2T hard drive only lasted barely 2 years, and Windows screen kept on going out on me, I gave up on Windows. I'm now an Apple convert with iPhone 13 Pro, and M2 MacBook Air. But time will tell how I like it, as my first Dell with Windows XP Pro lasted 10 years.
you can get a new 14" M2Pro model for ~$1500 from a billion different licensed dealers (BH/Adorama/costco/etc) if you wait for a semi-regular sale that pops up every couple of weeks. No need to take a gamble on an Amazon "renewed" product
Yes for sure, I got my 13.6 inch M2 MacBook Air with 16 gigs of ram, and 512 SSD storage from B&H photo with three years of AppleCare. Stay away from Amazon for computers. I was lucky my friend/lawyer got it for me with his B&H card where he doesn't have to pay sales tax. They always have good deals on renewed products. I got all my Canon camera equipment from B&H Photo.
Ports, audio quality, and ProMotion are pretty big for me so I could never stick with an Air. My 14 inch M1 Pro is my favorite computer I've ever owned and testing the 15 inch Air in store was underwhelming for me.
I never got 7-8 h on the M1 14” Pro which is pretty annoying. It wasn’t a problem to get it on the base M1 Air doing the same work (web development, figma, vs code). 14” drains the battery so fast that I kind of regret getting it over the specced-out Air.
I checked them both out in the Apple Store and the weight and thickness difference are indeed very noticeable. I’m not a pro so the air is perfect for me 😊 actually I went with the 13 air and it’s fantastic!
All that stuff he ran isn't important for most people at all. The pro is better in pretty much every area that matters for day to day in that the screen is say better, sound, promotion, port selection, base specs, etc all are pro features. Plus support for multiple monitors to use as a desktop natively. Screen size is negligible to be real between the two. If you're spending the extra and want more bang for your buck gett the pro and even consider the M1 pro.
The m1 air being on sale for 749 right now is the BEST DEAL! It’s not gonna be good for heavy work but the M1 chip is still Plenty for video editing , music work and web design work.
Just picked up a 14 inch M1 Pro (10 core ; 16GB / 1TB) for about 1500 USD brand new (in Malaysia) ; original retail was 2300 USD so I'm happy with the savings. The 14 inch M2 Pro ( 12 core : 16GB / 1TB ) is still 2300 USD now and I don't need a pro in the first place (was originally considering the Air) and upgrading from a 2019 13 inch Pro (intel ; 16 GB / 256GB) so I'm pretty excited. 14 inch M3 pro was too far out for me to wait unfortunately! Anyone else here has the 14 M1 pro for a while? How has it been so far?? Appreciate all experiences :)
I’ve got my base 14” m1 pro back in August. I was debating a lot between m2 MBA 13” and it. So happy I went with the pro. The screen smoothness and contrast is just another level, and with HDMI I don’t even need to use these adapters to connect a screen. Perfect laptop for life, the only thing is that it might be a bit heavy for some but mine spends 90% of the time at a desk, so it’s not a key factor for me.
Love the MBA, but as soon as I start editing or watching movies in the dark (gotta simulate that movie theater experience best I can) than the contrast ratio of the MBP really starts to pull ahead and show me why the MBP is the way to go. Nice to get ports and all that too, been sick of dock life for a while now it makes my table even more of a mess.
The M1 Pros renewed could have had a desperately hard life and paying that sort of money with no idea what life it had pre-renewal seems like a high-risk deal for little gain as you are effectively buying a chip from 2020!
@@ahaimes6320 processor chips are quite durable, and Apple refurbishment replaces the battery for a new one. the only risk is the TBW on the storage. in any case, Apple refurbished store gives the same warranty (and option to buy the Care insurance), so you can replace it within the one year. the target audience for the MacBook Air are folks with light computing needs anyway. so the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, refurbished, gives a better value with double the storage (faster with the two storage chips), double the memory, a better screen with HDR, better speakers. the drawback is the weight; and screen size is comparable to the 13-inch Air.
Something annoying for me is that the air only has usbc ports on one side, not ideal for my current desk set up at all as much as I’m thinking of switching from my 14 to it

The pro might look slightly better on the webcam but for some reason it sounds super muted on the “studio mics” the air sounds way louder and clearer… which is weird….love both these machines and am having such a hard time choosing… because I’ve really wanted the 14” but price is a factor theyre so expensive… but with the deals on the m1 its really a no brainer but the air does look amazing and with the addition of the 15” air it’s become even harder…. Would be an easy choice if they atleast upgraded the unified memory to 16gb… and brought back the dual nand chip atleast but 512 would obviously be better for base model.
Wow. Same situation I’m facing now. 😢 I feel so frustrated don’t know which one to choose
which one?
@@anupammahato115 air
Same dilemma here, thinking about Mac 15 inch because of the bigger screen and lighter. 14 inch one is thick and heavy.
The SD reader I have now is extremely useful for Lightroom, but I am not sure it wouldn’t be worth the additional weight the rest of the time.
how is it still holding up?
I got all my Canon camera equipment from B&H Photo.
i suggest you to use subtitles as supposed to just havng youtube generating it. it will help videos by a lot
Been looking for this review for weeks!! Finally someone did it!
If you're spending the extra and want more bang for your buck gett the pro and even consider the M1 pro.
in MacOS Sonoma an M1 Pro now scores 420 in speedometer on safari compared to 330 before. Can anyone test it out on an M2 or m2 Pro please?
Woah then it makes 14” M1 pro even a better deal
Huge difference in the mini LED. Never go back to LCD.
Actually not a big difference
I'll probably by 16" m1pro mb pro
The m1 air being on sale for 749 right now is the BEST DEAL! It’s not gonna be good for heavy work but the M1 chip is still Plenty for video editing , music work and web design work.
Can you compare the M1 Pro 16 with the ram and storage upgraded M2 Air 15.
Fun fact upgrading the macbook air 15 m2 pretty much brings it on par with 14 m2 pro refurbished which again makes you think 😂
This is the comparison i need. 😊 M1 Pro is such a great deal for the price.
Everyone else was just talking about the M2 Pro. 😢
@@ahaimes6320 you do realize they come with warranties right?
Great help in choosing my next laptop. I would like to know benchmarks of air with 8g ram and 512 ssd, one of base options.
Something annoying for me is that the air only has usbc ports on one side, not ideal for my current desk set up at all as much as I’m thinking of switching from my 14 to it
Yesss.. been waiting for this video comparison!
the extra cores on the m2 pro are just too tempting.
should i buy m1 pro "14 16/512 8-core CPU 10-core GPU or m3 air 15" 16/512 8-core CPU 10-core GPU. The difference in price is just $20 in my country. I am a full stack mobile app developer. Which one would be best for me ?
For future support in mind and bigger screen, go for M3,
For higher quality display and better heat dissipation/performance, go for M1 pro
Hey this is all so good. Your comparisons are the most specific and helpful!
I really love my mba 13 for its weight and battery.
But display on my mbp 14 is smth else!
For this price mbp is absolutely awesome.
Mb air 15 is the best ever macbook. It will beat all other macbook in sales .
I do agree sales wise, but I'd rather take that M1 Pro over the M2 Air any day of the week.
@@cjeelde true but currently mba 15 with 16gb ram+1tb harddisk will be most popular configration which will be usefull for all kinds of users like business or youtubers or any everyday use.
For the life of me I can’t find those insanely cheap deals on the M1 here in the EU. Even the Amazon link doesn’t work all I see is €2000+ laptops even the M1’s.
Nice to see you give a nod to us Software Developers in your review.
Would you ever be up for doing a ‘Java’ performance test? ( i know I am really asking for a stretch goal 😊 )
Yes do that. Maybe a Graal VM compile for native Java.
Thanks, Max. Could you also make a video comparing the MacBook Air 15-inch with other similar 15-inch competitors like the Dell XPS 15 Core i5 and Samsung, etc.?
I bought an air, I don’t care about all the minor details, I listen to music and use it for basic functions, I haven’t had a MacBook since 2011 so I’ll be good with the MacBook Air
How many more times are you going to make comparisons of a MacBook Air M2? Can you compare a MBP M2 MAX vs a 3080 laptop? compare an M2 ULTRA vs 3090 and 4080? interesting comparisons please
I’m curious , are they priced similarly? I haven’t touched windows system for quite sometime 😅
I actually bought a M1pro macbook bro just now and its so good! Instead of the m2 macbook air.
Faster SSD, can support multiple monitors, more ports, better screen with HDR, better speakers, more GPU cores, for less money ... hmmm. Touch decision for sure if you're looking for longer battery life or the latest generation. I find the 14" size works better when traveling on planes.
MacBook Air M2 13" 8cpu 10gpu 16gb 1tb $1299 or MacBook Pro M1 14" base for $1399? For a newer photographer/videographer, with this only machine to use for 3-5 years at least. Help!
I’ve had bad experiences buying Amazon Renewed devices so I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, buy refurbished directly from Apple.
Thank you for the 500 pictures export test (25 and 13 minutes). Doing rather a lot of timelapse's and so, very helpful information.
Comparing to the studio's it's still quit slow (3-4 minutes). Any chance to see a similar test with the Mac mini's ?
Wow the air does a better job in microphone and camera quality.
I favor the MacBook Air because it has minimal entry for dust, dirt, and debris. I don’t model nuclear physics, edit films, or compose music so I don’t need the raw processing power of the MacBook Pro and the requisite fans for cooling.
I was using the MacBook Air m1 and just got the MacBook Pro m1 for future proofing. I mean I only use it for UA-cam and amazon prime but yeah I also 15 pro and AirPods Pro so why not MacBook Pro as well :}
Only thing disappointing for the M1 Pro is the battery life
Did I fuck up by going with 16gb ram on the M1 Pro 14
I am an IT student so which mac should i buy ?
In uk, same product on Amazon costs $2383.
People besides the fact that the pro has 16gb of ram, the keyboard is op, cannot closely compare with the air
Very good test, thank you for the video
Is it safe to buy Amazon renew laptop?
Appreciate the video Max.
For people who did not watch the whole video: Buy the Macbook Pro 14 inch M1 pro
Yeah the M1 Pro value is so good it’s hard to pass up. You can also get the un-binned CPU model (10 cores, much more performance) for a great price now. That’s what I’d do if I didn’t have the M2 Max 16”!
Which unbanned model? 🤔
@@HumzaYousafFilms Lol I mean un-BINNED. (When one or more of the cores don’t work so they solder them off and sell the chip for less money.)
I’ll update my comment!
Please make review of Framework laptops. Is it so great and upgradable ? How is performance compare to macbook.
I am eyeing on MBA 15’ base (1190$ where I live), MBP M1 Pro 14’ with 1T storage (1499$) and MBP M1 Pro 16’ with 1T storage (1599$). I plan on keeping the laptop for 5years from now. Which one do you suggest? Also, should I be waiting for the M3 air 15’ instead?
(I’m office worker, doing very basic stuff, but thinking that the MBP M1 pro might better future proof)
Great idea comparing the two - BUT! What I’m loving in the first 3 min is your shirt. Where did u get it?! Im having a tough time finding decent shirts that are one of a kind and I actually like…. Loooooove that shirt! 😍
Great comparison video. Please do a comparison between Dell xps 15 9530 vs Macbook Air 15.
I bought the Air because performance wasn't a concern.
compare 15" air to 16" m1 pro now
Damn, you listen to your fans! This is the comparison we wanted to see!
The size difference though!
I really want a MacBook, i prefer the 15 inch for the bigger screensize as i watch alot of movies and want to edit my own stuff on there too.
bruh, the chair is squicking in the background :)
Hey man thanks for the comparison! Where I am I can get a refurbished 16-inch Macbook Pro [M1 PRO] vs 15-inch Macbook Air [M2] for about the same price. Use for youtube video editing 50% of the time, and the rest is just light use. Which one do you think you'd recommend? Cheers!
This is the type of content we’ve been waiting for
I've been waiting for a video like this!! Such a good comparison
It would be nice to compare the macbooks vs the lenovo slim pro 9i.
Wdyt about the 16 m1 pro?
I got 2tb 64gb for $1800 but I don’t do anything too intensive but I do work remotely often.
Yes thank you for this review.
What was the idea/inspiration behind your hairstyle?!?!😂
Does the XDR display offers any benefits compared to Retina display for normal use? Normal use = reading docs and books, browsing the web etc. No video or color correction work? Does the XDR helps with the eye strain or it’s just for pros?
It’s just more pleasing to the eye: smoother animations, higher contrast, brighter display
It depends. Some people are more sensitive to the promotion and PWM. Seems like the regular 13 and 15" airs dont have PWN screen which is more eye friendly.
Got tht 14 m1 pro 32gb ram 512gb ssd for 1700 euros. Waitin to come. Best deal ever. The MBP 14 without a doubt is way better than this mba 15m2. Period
15“ MBA already with 15% discount. So … ?
In EU you can't get an excellent feurbe pro m1 for less than 1600 euro..can get The 15 16 256 air for the same price
does the 15” has fan for cooling system?
The pro might look slightly better on the webcam but for some reason it sounds super muted on the “studio mics” the air sounds way louder and clearer… which is weird….love both these machines and am having such a hard time choosing… because I’ve really wanted the 14” but price is a factor theyre so expensive… but with the deals on the m1 its really a no brainer but the air does look amazing and with the addition of the 15” air it’s become even harder…. Would be an easy choice if they atleast upgraded the unified memory to 16gb… and brought back the dual nand chip atleast but 512 would obviously be better for base model. Would just really like to stay under 12-1300 dollars which is already expensive…
Was the 14 M1 Pro the 8 core?
Which one better between MBA 15" and MBP M1 16" Pro?
My work sometimes video grading in Resolve and premier, photo editing in PS and lightroom
Damnit. Thanks for raising the prices
04:53 nearly 5 times the performance in the real world...like copying files I do a lot.
I am watching this video on a MacBook Pro Core2Duo with 8gb of RAM, that my friend found in his basement. I installed Linux Kubuntu on my Core2Duo MacBook Pro as I could not do a clean install of macOS Lion as for some reason the computer won't install Lion.
