Unfortunatly this test isnt very good for telling porosity and her advice for nonporous hair worries me. You never want to purposly try to raise your hair cuticle because it's hard to get it to go back down. A cuticle that is laid down protects your hair and makes it shiny. Nonporous hair doesnt need moisture forced into it, because it easily retains the natural moisture in the cortex. Raising the cuticle just causes unnecessary damage.

And remember that product build up absolutely will affect porosity! Only do this test AFTER using a clarifying shampoo for a “blank slate” because if you use products with lots of oils or butters, they do coat the hair shaft and cause build up over time which can also have the same signs as low porosity hair. Build up prevents moisture from properly penetrating the hair shaft and thus causes dry, dehydrated hair.

I use body butter!; Soothing touch brand. Leave in Chi keratin. And SheaMoisture wash n' go gel in the tub. Perfection combo! The body butter and gobs of it, was the key to "taming" aka softening and laying down well, and holding beautiful shape. The gel was also an experiment and proved to be the best one. It sets the shape on place with blow-dryer but softens completely with no crunch or residue feel! And since I started tex-relaxing, argan oil on the ends just for safe, split end measure. Sorry it got so long lol it was going to be a simple response but I got inspired.💁🏽‍♀️

Essentially if your hair still feels like cotton when it’s wet then you have low porosity hair. Which is why washing goes may be a bit more difficult for you too. Moisture retention is your friend. It doesn’t take much for our hair to get dry because it doesn’t absorb as much moisture, your hair tangles and breaks off a lot easier when it’s dry so moisturising and conditioning your hair is where you need to prioritise.

Hairstylist here. One thing I want to point out is that the hair used was from a brush which means it has build up on it from previous product and sitting inside the brush. This test should be done on clean hair.
After the one strand of hair is shampooed it then good to the bottom. This is correct is high porosity, but that’s too high. At this point the cuticle is so open that it does not have the ability to retain any moisture because the cuticle is wide open and left open.
The objective is a slightly raised cuticle which is a normal cuticle or “medium porosity”. This is the best position for s cuticle because It’s open enough to receive yet closed enough to keep it in.
The curlier the hair the more porous the hair naturally is because the cuticle is unable to lay flat dir to the coils so a shampoo for low porosity hair shouldn’t be used on most curly textures.

    • @queb558

@@queb558 you have low porosity, which means your cuticles are tight so it may be hard for anything to penetrate the hair. You would want a shampoo that focuses on balancing the ph level of your hair. So in essence it will open the cuticle enough to be considered mid range. 4.5-5.5

porosity doesn't actually matter sometimes it could just be the products in your hair like oil

    • @Apaxetic
      @Apaxetic 2 роки тому +61

At that point, you have to know which porosity you have most on your hair and make sure your hair isn't damaged either because that will change it's porosity. It's best to look at the reviews of products and see if it works on the majority of people with multi-porosity hair or test different products yourself, if possible.

@@GoaWay... Pretty much the texture would be how your hair feels. It could be course, fine, etc. Different textures require a different approach to caring for it. Curl pattern is the curl of the hair or lack thereof. So thats referring to wether or not its straight, wavy, has tight curls (kinky) etc. The tighter the curls the harder it is for moisture to make its way down the hair shaft so it has to be moisturized with certain types of products and more often than straighter hair. Hope this helps a bit.

Hairdresser here 🙋🏽‍♀️. If your hair is dry moisturise it more. High porosity is damaged hair (chemically or heat damaged). If your hair is not damaged, you'll be just fine. Organic oil and water will do. Use vegan mouse if you want your curls to have a hold.

If you have low porosity hair you should use lighter oils such as grape seed oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil.
If you have high porosity then you’ll have to use thicker oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, and olive oil.
For people with medium porosity hair you should use rosehip oil, grape seed oil, and avocado oil.
There’s also a method called loc or lco and I think it also depends on your hair porosity but overall just listen to what your hair needs/wants.

@@amber6784 Interesting. I haven't heard of this before... I have low porosity hair and use any oil I grab 😅. I have olive oil to Amla oil. They all work just fine. I did the same when I had high porosity hair. I was taught that type 3 hair should use lighter oils such as coconut, almond and argon oil and type 4 hair, regardless or state, uses the heavier oils.
Are you from the US by any chance? Only asking because I have 17 years experience, studied hairdressing (all hair types) at 3 different hair schools (2021 I did a refresher) but I tend to see different advice on YT. 😅🙈
