1. To be clear...when starting a brand new saw for the first time, we select a piece of wood etc...and run it at full throttle under partial load? This is in spite of the owners manual stating that the saw is NOT be run at full throttle for the first 6-10 times it is used.
2. Also...duration: in the video you state that the AutoTune procedure will take 30-45 seconds. A dealer I spoke with seems to say that the saw needs to be run wide open for 5 minutes. What is an appropriate duration.
3. Please comment on whether it is necessary or appropriate to allow a brand new / never used saw to idle for 3 minutes before applying full throttle / partial load. Do we do this?

Hello, thanks for the comment. We reached out to Husqvarna to get some clarity on this. The owners manual states that the saw should never be run at full-throttle under no load for the first 5 to 10 operations. Unfortunately, some people take the saw out of the box and rev it full blast without cutting anything, is what the manual is referring to.
The dealer you mentioned speaking with is incorrect. Holding the throttle wide-open under no load for five minutes will certainly cause engine damage and potential/eventual failure of the engine. With an auto-tune saw, the chainsaw needs to remain at full throttle (under load) for 30 to 45 seconds, or until the operator hears at least one adjustment-but preferably more than one with the saw under load. This will cause the saw to enter tuning mode intentionally and adjust to the surrounding conditions. This cut can be done, and should be done, when the saw is new or when the operating conditions abruptly change. Obviously, we want the saw to warm up. Get up to operating temperature and allow the chain to be lubricated completely. This does not, however, mean that you grab the saw full-throttle to warm it up and lubricate the chain. Partial throttle and spurts of throttle, allowing the saw to warm up and lubricate the chain.
It will do neither any good nor any harm to a saw if it is idling for several minutes. At that point we are just wasting fuel. As long as we are talking about idling and not high idle. High idle for several minutes on a chainsaw will cause permanent damage in the form of a possible fire in conjunction with the chain brake being applied. We hope this clears any confusion up.

The link is good as provided to a video from Tim Ard featuring David Breedon of Husqvarna. There are two overarching steps to forcing a reset or setup of Autotune: 1) Low/idle and 2) high/under load. For the we first step, that's start and IDLE for 5.5 minutes to set low. For step 2, that's a cut under load at full throttle for about 1.5 minutes. For normal operations, idling a saw for long periods increases temp and carbon build up. Typical occasions to reset Autotune (after initial setup) could be 1) change of season/temp/humidity 2) big change of operating altitude 3) change in fuel type/mix or 4) after service/major cleaning/tune up.

Thank you for posting this. I took the leap today and bought a 592 xpg . Decades of running 372,385,395xp I found myself reading the owner’s manual on the new saw . Feeling completely ignorant in regards to technology on a saw I found nothing on how this works.

How much you wanna bet it tunes during your first couple cuts
If you follow the process layed out in the video, you'll be certain that you've done all you can to set the auto-tune properly the first time. Once it is set, it continually adjusts as you cut over time. It's a feature of the AutoTune system to continually adjust your RPM's to give you the most out of your saw during every cut at any given time.
Just a couple cuts and it’s tuned up.

Mine idles well, but suddenly won't rev to full throttle.
Is there a non at version of the 395xp?
Let it idle a good 3 mins first to let it tune the low end then do the cut for the high end

Yup sound just like how to tuning old carburator... This saw actualy every time can tune it self when you use that at the diferent themp, air quality(oksigen lvl, presure)... I see... Thats the problem when all that change... My old 272xp some times they runs good and sometimes litle bit slow and heat... Waw i realy want this saw... I not a profesional person to tune old chainsaw...

My auto tune has failed. Requires a whole new carburetor. Reminds me of 1980s cars with electronic carburetors. I need to talk to warranty dept . Now. Didnt get registration in internet shipping .

Should this be done before break in or after ?
It's fine to do this any time after the first time the saw is started. This adjustment will happen continuously as you use the saw over time after the settings have been calibrated the initial time.

Why that procedure, don’t it adjust itself automatically while using it normally?
Sometimes you need to manually adjust and test to ensure it has been tuned properly. This video explains how to do just that.
If the saw is New. The air filter must be clean.
So thats a brand new saw wide open. Just wondering about break in with autotune?
Good example why you might do a quick reset: The last time I worked with my saw, it was about 20* F, and this weekend it was about 48*F. Since conditions were different, it needed a moment to reset how it wants to feed the carb. Besides, I'm always going to run my saw a bit on first start up to let the engine warm up anyway, before I really start tearing into the logs.
@@rmcdaniel423 I do the same. Also; if I'm bucking I may not be running at full RPM for enough time for the auto-tune to compensate?

So which is it? First you say partial load. Then you say wide open towards the end.
I guess he means work load, he recommends running over length of the tree like in the video without much pressure on the saw. and at full throttle.
partial load l, compared to heavy load on the saw, which might be cross cutting logs (bucking in the USA)
Hello. By mentioning partial load in the earlier part of the video, he was referring to the pressure of the saw on the log being (soft and little force) while the throttle was fully engaged. It's only appropriate to fully press the trigger while the saw is under load on a log. Holding the throttle wide-open under no load can cause engine damage and potential/eventual failure of the engine.
That saw looked dull as fk. No chips. Just dust.
Good eye. This was a demonstration saw that gets used a lot for training and demonstration, and it was before we sharpened the chain in a later video. Also, Dale is an experienced cutter, so he knew how much pressure to apply to set the autotune without routing out the log too much. Gentle pressure is all it takes, so there wouldn't normally be chips coming out. The log was also dry, which could have had an effect on it too.

I call nonsense on this auto tune setup baloney, it's auto tune and as such it will tune itself by itself everytime you fire it up and cut..performing this setup ritual does nothing the saw won't do by itself automatically the first time AND everytime you're cutting wood.
I can see all kinds of problems with this. Think about all the times a carb sat and needed the pilot cleaned or the carb gone through....and then retuned or dialed in or tweaked day to day, but this is supposed to auto do all of this?
What happens the first time someone fires their saw up on gummy gas? When an ordinary saw doesnt leap off of idle? This saw smart enough to know this??? Or will it reset for that bad condition and leave us with a poor running saw?
And secondly, this 45 second tuning cut is supposed to tune the high end? Im calling doubt.
There are so many variables. Depth of cut, wood density, load, weather atmospheric pressure days, or traveling to an elevation change. How does a saw know the present condition is a real condition and not a fouled port or crappy pump gas?
Clearly its not ideal to hold a fresh motor at a loaded full throttle on its first start, but this is whats happening to our new saws behind closed dealer shop doors? No thanks.
I just bought one of these and wasnt made aware of any of this. Im a carb guy Tuning is just part of the 2 stroke world be it saws, dirtbikes, sleds, radio controlled toys, etc...etc. those rings need to seat before a constant high load. Any constant throttle is not ideal before the rings seat.
How do we know when the saw goes in or out of auto tune? Is there a blinking light or something?
This is not going to be ideal. And as an engineer, "manual" function should always trump the "auto" function.
Auto pilot doesnt taxi, take off, or land the plane. Auto is fine but it can never take the full place of manual. Manual should always be able to overide auto. This is true on nearly everything man made be if boilers, planes, transmissions, engines, industrial electrical breakers.....
Yea...this auto tune system needs a bypass and some jets to monkey with.
Autotune is the reason why I will not buy a Husqvarna chainsaw! I'm a small engine mechanic and this autotune nails you to the stealer!!! If I can't fix my own stuff then I don't want it!

We understand where you're coming from. It's meant for the professional who is using this gear and needs to make quick, accurate adjustments on the fly, probably on the job during cutting. Husqvarna must see that the convenience of that outweighs the number of those who might want the control of manually tuning their saws.
I'm regretting buying mine. So much to love about this saw, but the autotune is not working and I can't adjust the carburetor. It just won't rev up anymore. About 45 hours on the saw.
