kevin is the king of three wheelers. last time i saw that many in one place, i was in a honda dealership in the 80's trying to buy parts for my 125 elsinor.
Apparently these were more reliable in the 90's. The most I owned at once was 5, three of which were loaners, my 250R which I had more money in than my daily driver, and a very torquey Frankenstein 3 wheeler which was a 185S with a worked over 200 top end, big carb and supertrapp exhaust. The suspension front end was off a big red, so it always looked like it was going up hill. The 250R was a Glamis only ATC with a wide axle and extended swingarm and way to much power for the desert. My in-laws had a house right on the edge of the desert and always wanted to go riding with me. They kept beating up my 185S so I bought 2 200S and a 200M which had electric start. The problem was they would try to keep up with me on my XR350 R (one cylinder, two carbs, 4 valves and duel exhaust, ... and just two wheels, fast) and end up in some cactus somewhere. The 3 wheel ATV ban of the early 80's has runout so technically manufacturers could start building 3 wheel ATV's again. They got a bad reputation because people were letting kids ride them that were way to young.
Check out the documentary on why they were banned. Nothing to do with age and everything to do with center of gravity. If you don't lean your entire weight to one side during a turn, you're going over. And you're probably right that kids did not have to weight to counterbalance the way three wheelers needed to be riden.
