Some years back I had a similar problem where my alto lost 90% braking power because of brack fluid leakage & I was in the middle of a busy market & there was no chance of stopping anywhere so I used engine bracking & handbrake just to get out of there, it was a real tough situation for me but I got through it & learned a very vital lesson in life.
Always check your brack fluid.
one thing you said that we all should do practice of this some times so that we can do it in emergency. this is very nice thing . thanks for sharing your practical experience with us i was aware of it and i used it three times in my real life even when i was sitting adjusting to driver . To add to it:
Once you realise that your brakes have failed, immediately switch on your hazard lights (blinkers), so that by the time you stop your car, the ones behind you don't crash into you..!! Keep an eye on the rear view mirror, if cars behind you are too close, you need to somehow raise your right arm outside, signalling a stop, besides other co-passengers (specially the ones at the back who don't generally wear seat belts (in India) need to brace themselves for the sudden stop & need to be verbally warned cooly.
To add 1 more thing to it:the 'ENGINE-BRAKING' involves the gear-box, along with the engine- resistance...& this leads to little, or medium, or massive damage to the clutch-plate &/or the gears (depending on the speed-factors, & gear-changing timings)...but still then, these damages are worthy of... if u can save ur self &/or others' lives...

You must have also mention in video that while applying hand-brake, steering should be in middle position otherwise car could loss traction and back part of car can go sideways on the road. That may cause bad accidents on road.
