As a descendant of one of those Portuguese immigrants who brought this to Hawaii (Ravenscrag 1879) I enjoyed this story. A more interesting definition of the name is "jumping flea"; at least that is what I have heard over the years.
I was lucky to obtain a 1916 style 2 (no dots on the fingerboard) and what a sound! In a jam ive played with 2 guitars and a mandolin and my uke cuts through em all! The tone is just not beat by anything else!
The name ‘ukulele comes from the Hawai’ian for jumping flea, not jumping strike. ‘Uku comes from the Hawai’ian for louse or flea and lele from to fly, jump, or leap. This likely refers to the quick, jumping play style on the small instrument. I have a degree in linguistics and I used dictionaries and etymology sources to research this. Let’s all do better by minority languages.
Wait.....did she say "the last time the ukulele was this popular was about 100 years ago?" Uh..no....it took less than 10 seconds to realize you'll say anything to sell a product. That statement ruined the rest. I know this is an ad but.....
Ukulele means jumping flea, not strike
And I’d say it means jumping flea as in the grasshopper?
