    They dont have problems..
They are not honed on flat stones is all.
Call TI they will explain to you how to hone them without destroying the spine.
That is not a critic it is a true advice, a stone convex on the width will fix any problem you think the blade has.
Or send it to me i’ll make a video to show you how i do it.

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  2 роки тому +8

I was going to address this but didn't want to open this can of worms. Convex stones can work around a warp or high spots on the spine... but it's still a work around! These problems I addresss here are NOT from the convex stones. They don't create high spots on the spine or twists in the steel. And I don't doubt you can hone these razors and get decent edges on domed stones.. but they'll still have twists and high spots and if those were removed as I demonstrate here, they'd produce even better edges on the convex stones.

@@drmatt357 it comes from forging, and always will. Old school French forging = ONE die, several softer forging/reheating/forging cycles, the cooling/reheating is what causes the warps but the payoff is u can start with a smaller cylinder which [according to old TI owner] means a better max thinness...
Solingen style forging OTOH = 4-6 dies, much harder drop forge force, a single heating/cooling cycle, a larger required beginning cylinder, an end product without "sine/cosine-style" warpage. But then they go use their platen thing which ALWAYS (slightly, but very consistently) warps toward show side. Even the amazing Facharbeit exhibits this, if the platen disc is used it is a certainty.
Old Sheffield era forging is akin to the French way, that's why they gently oscillate inconsequentially from perfectly flat in the same manner.
Not to say this method u show doesn't work, it does. But to hear old TI owner tell it, if convex stones (or wheels, that no longer exist) are used at factory, there's no need for correction of (his words) "carving a flatter, slightly smaller, slightly thicker tipped object from inside of a larger, less flat, and thinner tipped object", if the end user just uses a pasted paddle strop regimen for their sharpening needs [which will cater to the incumbent unique geometry, rather than compelling the razor to cater to it as done here]. That's why the old TIs had paper included advising only pasted strops for resharpening.
I agree with Mr. Loft that the best possible peak performance from any given razor is when its edge apex is at its furthest possible from the spine, and anything else we do closer to the spine has by definition a slightly lower comfort ceiling. Any (hollow ground only) razor, any brand.
For the life of me, can't understand why a fellow "man of science" who has the tools in hand wouldn't try it the other way. Just face a cheapie 1k waterstone to the 9" axis, use that to thin rear of bevel on any razor to which you're familiar (you'll never even touch your actual edge), shave with it, and that will be that.

@@drmatt357 have fun, new shaves await...as to your method here which obviously always works, if the only thing that changed was that following the tape-edge-flatten-spine procedure, your plate step and waterstone steps were on shapes of ~5mØ 'perfect' cylinders instead of flats, then the coti/Ark bit was flat, you would be blown away how much better it was, and sounded on the strop.
I'm 'working for the man' now and can *truly* DGAF as far as 'haters' go now, they're going to get their real wish to watch EU razors go out of production in our lifetime. But I'll at least send out a feeler to DMT, they're not a super big co., and we did in fact *sell* >400 plates, and the ONLY one I've ever seen sold secondhand was from thp001 in Montana who I gave both to for free as you got, so that might mean something to DMT it is worth just adding one little SKU and then taking their D6EF and making a run where the nickel slab's shaped to whatever short cylindrical Ø they can safely cut into that 2x6" form, that would be an amazing bevel-setter for sure. More resistance to the concept will come from 'special geometric stone maintenance' requirements than other factors, in my opinion. Take care!

I just brought a nice seven day set direct from thiers issards . I have to say it's really nice set
I had a lot of contact with Chantel who works there and I asked what paste they finish there razors on and if the hones were convexed ??
Now the reply I got was ? Hi Gary we use 2 fine diamond plates which are flat and we finish with 260 white rasoir pate to leave mirror finish .
Now that the reply I received ? Unless she wasn't aware they were slightly convexed I'm not sure .
Having shaved with each razor they shaved but a little tugging at the toe area and definitely need further honing . So far I've honed 2 razors out of seven and no issues with the bevel contact so far .

I received your note last night that my razor and it was on its way in the mail and wished I had asked for photos-on a whim I checked your channel before work-a 20 minute video showing the process from start to finish is WAY better! Before he boxed it, the “Planete Rasoir” salesman checked the edge and commented, “ooh, very sharp” and I stifled a chuckle, which turned to angst when I got home from Paris and tried shaving with it which then turned to a bit of buyer’s remorse when viewed under magnification. Seeing your satisfaction with your work makes me all that more anxious to get a chance to use it once it gets here. Thank you for the work, and Merry Christmas.

The way you sharpen and do a bevel has changed the game for me. I really struggled with getting an edge on some of my Antique Store finds. When you said you dont know who started the weight of the blade nonsense and you really dig into the blade when sharpening. its turned an hour process into 10 mins. Thanks so much for your videos as they have helped me out quite a bit on the sharpening aspect.

I certainly don't mind reviews on bevel and grinding. I find your videos the best source (for me) of straight razor information. I've tried for about 2 years to get an edge at least equal to the twin edge disposables I can get at the Dollar store for 10 cents. I'm just about there. Things improved when I changed the bevel and aggressively put some lean on the blade. I ground it like I was mad at it... and I was, but it improved. It's a personal challenge to make improvements. I have yet to achieve a shave like you get when you give that "smile of approval" from a newly sharpened edge, but I'm getting closer. Please, Dr. Matt, keep these kind of videos coming. They've helped me immensely.

Hey Dr. Matt, Another video well worth my time! A few comments
    1) I keep hearing the TI C135 steel is amazing, but gotta be honest, for that price I can get a flawless new Ralf Aust or 4-6 vintage razors off the Bay that will be easier to fix. But will definitely keep this in mind, I do occasionally pick up an old beater with some twist in it.
    2) I think it is worthwhile for you to show the honing progression, even if it seems repetitive to you. It’s one thing to say “My progression is 1k, 5k, 8k, and to call out the exact stones, but what you do with the stones matters a ton. How many of which strokes you use, how much pressure, how much slurry, … So actually seeing what someone else is exactly doing is really helpful for those of us who only really know how we ourselves hone.
    3) I recently acquired 2 coticules (1 vintage, 1 new) and my most recent honing was coticule on plain water followed by a black ark. Phenomenal edge! So I thought it cool to see you doing the exact same finish. Happy Holidays!🎉

    Hello Dr Matt.
I am new to straight razor shaving for over a year. Before shaving, I looked through tons of information about straight razors.
And I found your UA-cam channel. I watched almost all your videos about the correct sharpening of the razor, about different types of sharpening stones and about shaving itself.
Where I live in England, I don't know of any professional straight razor sharpeners. So, I had to do everything myself. This is where your videos come in handy. Thank you very much.
On your recommendation, I decided to order few goods in "Imperia La Roccia". I contacted the owner and everything was fine until I saw the shipping cost. Delivery cost at least 1.5 times higher than the cost of the goods. I really wanted this product but it didn't happen. But these are only my problems.
Thank you so much again for your help with our shave.

Yes it's definitely a one shot deal with geometry correction and bevel setting. Followed your steps to correct the geometry, and shabango, I have another great razor. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it's like going to a master class on sharpening razors. People may be critical of your techniques, but how can they argue with results. Cheers!

I have watched I think every video that you have made. You have been very helpful in so many was. I've have destroyed a few razors because of the geometry issues, and never figure out what was I doing wrong, but I happen to run into one of your videos on youtube, and ended up watching I believe most of them. I'm still learning and I'm sure I will still be learning in years to come. I have looked all over the web for various finishing stones, I do own the some naniwa stones I just have not bought a natural stone yet. It would be amazing to try one, but there is a lot to choose from. I do remember seeing you using the I.L.R. in a video or two and talked about how wonderful it is, I just haven't got to buy one yet. Again your videos have been inspiring, and extremely helpful, I can say I almost stopped using straight razors because I just couldn't get a damn edge back on it. Your videos help me stay the course. Thank you Dr. Matt for the help I do appreciate it.

Thank you for another great video. Learned so much from you that it is priceless. As a fellow Vale Rossi fan who is getting ready to purchase his first set of stones, I am crossing my fingers for number 2 give away pack. Have a great holiday season and a merry Christmas...

Great video! Perfect timing for me I have a TI that it seems to not shave the best. I am going to check on the geometry and correct per your instructions. I do love the black Arknsas for a finisher, I order mine just after your burnishing video.

Another nice video. I bought a Thiers Issard straight razor some time back (time flies) based on your recommendation. Your videos have helped me (and many others) a lot, although I'm still working on it - and my sharpening journey is a slow and steady race (you make it look so easy). Happy holidays! All the best.

Thanks again for the videos and the giveaway opportunity. I'm starting back up my straight razor journey after some time away cheating with shavettes. I have a couple razors to hone and that stone and strop would be perfect. Thanks again for the techniques and learning all these years.

Great video Matt, still using a Feather style shavette as stones are a bit of a barrier to using a full straight razor. Have tried with cheaper stones but would love to win this. If not good luck to everyone else.

Merry Christmas Dr. Matt. I've never used a straight razor, but it's always intrigue me. The cost getting into straight razor shaving seems a bit prohibative. But slowly I'm collecting items. For instance, I bought a sharpening stone rack, like the one you mentioned in a previous video, for the kitchen sink. Which I currently use to sharpen kitchen knives. Winning one of these prizes would be a great step forward for me. Even if I don't win, it's a great Christmas giveaway, for whoever wins. Great video.

Just started back making some straight razors, testing the different types of steel and heat treatments I want to use. Really enjoy your video and have learned a lot! That premium ILR would be amazing to finish on. I could send a picture of the razor I’m working on now if you like, finishing up the scales and turning the hardware. Thanks
