Can We Get This Busted Burlington Northern Athearn Riding the Rails Again?

- I picked up this older Burlington Northern Athearn engine off eBay months ago in a lot. This loco was one of the ones which started fine however it couldn't ride the rails due to a missing rear wheel. As luck would have it I happened to have a spare which I could use on this loco so today I thought I would show you all my process of installing it.
I am impressed every broken train that is coming to your position you fix right away and you know how to do it you are by far one of the best fixtures and HO scale trains
They are basic repairs. Athearn BB locomotives are literally some of the easiest locomotives to work on
Now you need some hand rails! Thanks for showing how to do the maintenance! Take care!
SMT makes our days better with restorations. 10/10
Awesome job Harrison. Always a joy to watch you. Thanks for sharing with us. 💕😊💕🇺🇸
You have to really mess up to kill an Athearn Blue Box locomotive. I've got a bunch of them most of which I purchased in small lots here and there. They are without question my favorite HO scale locomotives. Sure i've got newer and nicer units but the old Blue Box are just super tough, reliable, and easy to keep going.
It's a GP50. It's spotting features are the larger rear radiator grilles at the rear, the Quiet-fans on top, the anti-climbers on front and rear. The real difference was internal. The 50 series attempted to press the already prime mover to its limits and beyond, which caused to many failures. The 50 series (GP and SD) was responsible for EMD to lose its top spot and America's best locomotive builder to GE.
A lot more GP40s were built than GP50s
I just recently bought one of these exact units at my local hobby store for $20. All in tact handrails and all! Ran wonderfully right out of the box!
Hey Alan, I'm a newcomer to the hobby, and I'm interested in finding some old reliable engines like this. How do you identify an Athearn Blue Box by looking at it. If I'm not mistaken, most manufacturers don't print their name on the engines, so how do you know what you're getting??
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks. Steve
Good easy restoration . this is how i learned how to take apart my athearn locomotive when you restored one before. I noticed a bit of hair or carpet hair got in gears at 3:17 to 3:18 . I hope it dont mess it up .
You need one of those "That was Easy" buttons from Staples, Harrison. You certainly love to work on those Athearn locomotives. I'm sure you have a spare truck cover somewhere to replace the missing one.
Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Well done, Harrison, as we have come to expect. Although my personal interest is in streetcars, I find many of the electrical connections and power systems that you so carefully explain as you repair them are typical of some of my older models. Keep up the good work!
It’s amazing how you can fix these with ease. I find it quite hard to fix them. Can you do an in depth tutorial?
It's most likely a GP50. Burlington Northern had their locomotives painted with the orange and black"tiger stripes" on the front, similar to the original green and white stripes design, then switched to painting the BN logo on the front of the hood.
I have one, it is a Gp50, says so right on the side of the cab as well lol.
This scheme appeared shortly after Burlington Northern absorbed the St Louis San Francisco (aka the Frisco) Railroad in 1980 and was dubbed by many as the 'Frisco Northern' scheme. Unfortunately, this scheme appeared during a rather dark chapter for BN's history due to labor disputes and the downturn in the economy in the 1980s, darn shame too, this is actually one of my personal favorite BN schemes, saw the real ones when I was a little kid!
@@Subpowerzero66 as the 1990's ended, those GP50 units got rebuilt into GP53 and GP25 models. The nose got repainted with White Faces and large BN logos. Unfortunately, most got repainted into BNSF or scrapped
Definitely a GP50. If he didn’t want to repair that shell, you could put a blue box GP40-2 on that frame as well. GP38-2 fits that frame as well, but they’re usually on the small fuel tank frame. I love repairing those, as they always come back from the dead.
@@robby062 The frame size of the GP38 and DASH 2 series has changed recently to replace the short tanks with medium and long fuel tanks. Also, another option would be to have non-dynamic or full dynamic braking. On flat layouts non-dynamic is better. dynamic works best on long or steep grades. The GP40, 50 and 50 series are turbo charged for maximum power output.
Athearn blue box locomotives are the AK-47 of Ho trains. Simple, rugged, hard to kill, and easy to repair.
i love these old blue boxes but i especially love this BN paint scheme
You're a wizard🌟
Very cool you are very skilled at fixing locomotives thanks for inspiring me to make a UA-cam channel
You do such an nice job of showing how to service these ol. Athearns. I woulda just inserted the wheel. LOL. But where is
the side frame? It still bums me out that skip showing the step of checking and setting the wheel gauge. Especially knowing
that someone _sent_ you the NMRA gauge. C'mon man!
we have a rarity in St. Petersburg with such a chassis. mostly mekhano films. with a drive for one cart. 🚂👍
Another great repair and recovery of a neat model, well done Harrison
Athearn Blue Box should be called the Tanks of HO .... 🤣
That motor it has is bulletproof. I have a UP gp40 which is also athearn with the same motor and it will haul 13+ cars by itself no problem and my layout has lots of turns. I can only imagine how much it can pull with all straights! You can make the engine in the video nicer too there is a site that sells handrails to these. The engine will almost look new out of the box if the new rails are put on correctly.
SMT SMT we have a runner!!!!! Thanks for the video.
I want one of those ho scale locomotives...but not broken!
IIRC it's a GP50, it says right on the side sill though. Shouldn't be too hard to source the handrails and parts bag for it though.
It's a GP50. One way to tell is the much larger radiator grilles. Another way could be the blower duct, but I think some late 40-series units got these (I know later CP SD40-2s did). The easiest way, however, is probably the "GP50" marking on the frame.
We missed you at the Massena Train show this year, fortunately I’ve got you covered when it comes to video 😉. Hopefully you can make it to next year’s show.
Great job Harrison
Great video SMT, I always love watching you’re videos! By the way, this engine is an EMD GP50
This GP50 is awesome. The Gp50 is my favorite locomotive
That is a GP50. The prototypes make 3500 horsepower. They look just like GP40s. The only reason I know it is a GP50 is because they were the only ones painted in the , "Tiger," paint scheme.
It's big brother, the awesome looking SD50, had the same prime mover and was a six-axle unit.
BN had three SD60s and an SD40-2 painted in that scheme too, also too bad the 50 series had reliability issues.
@@cacline72 Wow, didn't know they had painted SD60s like that. Thanks for the info.
Yeah, too bad about those big SD50s, as they are great looking machines. Rushed production and a case of pushing the SD40 engine too hard, power-wise, resulted in one problem after another, so I've read. The vibration incurred to get the extra 500 hp out of that engine negatively affected other engine components, according to Wikipedia. Also, many engineers remarked on their rough riding characteristics.
Nice athearn restoration!
Just did a bluebox GP9 up myself.Even easier she never been run before.Another one for the SMT manual.Put that one under maintenance.👍🚂🇨🇦
This video is awesome, also I just got 6 diesel locomotives off eBay, haven’t arrived yet, but hopefully they’ll be fun to fix
Another fine job from Harrison!!! My on;y comment would have been soldering a wire from the top tab on the trucks to the center of the motor clamp, so that electrical contact is 100% solid. You'll also want to run a wire from the top of the motor to the tab on the lamp as well. I've done that with ALL my Athearn "blue box" locos.
I love Burlington Northern Engines.
Got a Menhano ATSF 2-6-0 at the train show today
Hi SMT mainline! I just have a question
Where do you store all the trains
you buy? Do you sell them back after you clean them? Or do you keep them.
Thanks!
Hi Simon, thanks for this video. I have a few B/Box GP38s to tackle. Some of them are 'Lumpy' runners and I reckon this is possibly due to wobbly-wheels. I just wondered if you ever check the Wheel Back-to-Back with a Gauge? I have a 14.5mm Gauge that I made years ago for my OO Scale models. Now I know how to dismantle a B/Box Gearbox, I will be using the Gauge to check that the Wheels and Axles are assembling correctly before re-assembling the Gearboxes. Thanks if you are able to reply.
great video
Coincidence I just purchased one in November 2021 at a train show in POUGHKEEPSIE , NEW YORK my version of this ATHEARN blue box beauty is an unpowered version. Yours gonna need cosmetic work. I did notice one side frame missing.the front & back platforms chipped making railing installation awkward. If you look in the WALTHERS Catalog or any other sources for parts. Otherwise ATHEARN older models are tough with care of course. I now will repair the second BN (yes I bought 2) needs lubrication as well. Many models were purchased that day. Anyway good repair job on this engine.
HELP!!!
How do I replace Locomotive rubber traction ?
Is there a spacific name that it is called that I could buy online? Thank you kindly.
Cool restoration
How do you know how to do all of this? I want to learn how to repair my trains too!
Watch his videos, you pick up a thing or two
Thanks!
Nice I love your train videos
I wonder how that wheel came off? Anyone want to guess? The original owner sent it off a sweet jump? Or the owner needed a spare part to fix another loco for a video he was doing? Or maybe it just fell off, rolled away, under a couch and there it remains. Collecting dust, avoiding the vacuum cleaner every Saturday morning.
Or his kid/sibling played with it on a carpet for a few months
The dog ate it, Mark. Better keep an eye on Gucci. Or possibly it went to that place where all the missing socks go. 🤔
Smt, would you ever consider doing an operating session on your layout?
He does live streams of him running his layout
Hi I was trying to find out about some cleaning tools oil bottle that u use to do maintenance on the trains I have many trains and like to take apart and maintenance them can u help me to find were I can buy these tools
Did these Athearn Burlington Nothern Units come with DCC sound?
I'm not sure if you have one but an nmra ho scale track and wheel gauge comes in handy when dealing with the wheelsets on athearn locomotives
My friend Jon deer train made by athearn caught fire and he said "shows how good athearn is" it was melted
Ok boomer
I've heard of electronic components in modern Athearn locomotives going wrong but I've never seen or heard about anything like that happening on a blue box model.
the motor It had looks like what you showed in the video but the motor looked shorted and burned and melted what could cause that?
Did you happen to find a side truck frame for the engine?
What day you going to fix the Pennsylvania railroad 2-10-0
BN 3124 is a EMD GP50 phase II
Tiger Stripe!
40k subs loomin’ 👀
It’s actually a gp50
Turns out, that locomotive isn't a GP40.
It's a GP50.
How Many Engines You have to Fix Yet?
It is a GP50
Funny thing today i got a life like Mighty Mac n scale train
Can you do an N Scale one day ?
Hi smt I am early and I love your videos
Super detail it and put a BNSF patch
The actual loco is now repainted in swoosh scheme
About the slug i thought of turning the loco trucks into fiction motors
That's a GP50
Can I buy some locos from you
Great vid, do u have a twitter account?
Would you be interested in selling that GP50 unit..........
Made it within 15 minutes
