Maybe a stupid solution byt why dont you just put a pump in the moving bed to help it go 😎? It would svirm like a bee hive with a small 40watt sump pump 😎

I've been thinking about this project and how I would go about making that particular pond almost alpine lake clear and here are the changes I would make.
    1. Invite the local fishing club to fish out most of the carp family fish in a full-day competition. Make it a fun event with prizes and everything. Or use more industrial ways to remove the fish. This helps both with reducing sediments being disturbed and releasing particles and nutrients in the column and also reduces predation of zooplankton that keep the algae in check. This is done on an industrial scale at eutrophic lakes in Sweden to great effect when it comes to water clarity where the population of roach and bream has gotten out of balance with the predatory species.
    2. Adding a mechanical filter section with a large number of fleece/polyester micron pads running in parallel in between coarse foams from coarsest to finest. This would clear most of the water passing through to about 50 microns.
    3. As a final water polishing stage add a large diatomaceous earth filter, a couple of hundred kg of carbon, and a few hundred watts of UV-C
    4. Add a 30 000l pump in the last filter chamber and run the hose to the fluidized bed tub. This helps move the media and also filters out the water again. I use this technique in my sump.
    5. Possible increase the pump power in the pond to 100 000l and increase the tub numbers/size to help settlement.
Now we should have pretty clear water. I'm sure the wife likes that electric bill as a result!
I just want to say this is an incredible inspiration, Richard. Your passion for this hobby shines through.

Hi Richard. Just to let you know the reason you are having problems fluidising your media is not enough air to get a nexus with only 200l of media moving tidy you need at least 100l of air i use a 130l to get good movement in chamber your size i would say 100-120l minimum i would recommend the hailea et-120 very reliable and much quieter than aco series which started with.

Nice updates. You might need moar pump for that air ring. It's a big ring for the pump.

With the moving bed filter couldn't you split a large diameter pipe and place both pieces to the bottom of the container making it smooth flowing w or 🥂 shape to ensure a double rolling motion. Add a small amount of air to the center point, direct the nozzles to crash down on the outside edges, and the outflow just to the inside edge of of the nozzles on both sides. Also restricting the outflow with a spreaderbar with smaller orifices to keep the velocity high to further encourage rotation. A secondary higher overflow would be required. The air could possibly be temporary once its mature and dialed in.
Actually the air would be more efficient if it could follow the the same type of pipe used to shape the bottom to the top 1/4 th rotation. Use 3/4 of two large pipe's instead of splitting one in half. Hope this makes sense.
Sorry if I suggested a bunch of stuff you've already gone over in the past and waisted your time. Good luck with that thing. I'm looking forward to seeing it work as it should. I know you'll get it done somehow.

Another moving bed problem could be the way the water exits the container. The media may not get sucked through but it may stick against the perferated pipe. Try placing the water inlet over the top of the perferated pipe to force off the media. It will of course try to get sucked back to it causing it to move, at least around the exit pipe.

You can ETCH the medium (K1) with "Potassium Permanganate" for an faster grow of the bacteria on extra surface
so your medium is moving much faster

Could you add a venture in the pipe where your trying to introduce air ? Have someone machine one from stainless steel that would fit a larger pipe so you don’t loose volume ? Just thinking about your beautiful setup. Thanks for a great video.

You should increase the water level by a few inches. Then should start moving crazy and getting crazy surface area. Hel X media is made to move. Great vid tho👌

U may have a few 2 many diffrent direktions in the water, mby if the water inlet pushed it down on 1 side, air up on the other. The square tub, and the long outlett pipe ads a lot of resistance in the water.
Dont know if its a bad ideer, but could u rough up the surface of the media, if u put it in a cementmixer, with some water and sand?
Like the ideer of the reed (aquaponics) outlet, need some warm weather, so we can finaly see what goes in the aquarium. :)

Could add powerheads/pumps to the moving bed on the top.

    • @AndytheMinion
      @AndytheMinion 5 років тому +1

I second that, they are low power consumption and cheap A few could be positioned around the outside edge to create a circular swirl around the container. Chances are the media has too much mass and it's the weight and friction that is stopping movement. If you still have the 12000litre pump, putting it in that container with a zero head would also stand a good change of generating enough force.

  • @rottison

I would bet a 1.5 meter piece of pvc pipe with small holes in it on top and sides would really increase the amount of air and pressure to move that media bed would be really easy to test just unplug the drip hose and have a pvc pipe all ready to go with the same fittings for the air line and a couple caps solvent weld on each end or you could use 2 pipes and join them with 90's to increase surface mass if it does not work to your liking just return the hose fittings and you will get 90% your money back just a thought. :)

    Hi there,
What a brilliant filter system and we so much enjoy your videos over here in France. One thing we could use in our MUCH smaller system and have had difficulty getting though is the white mesh tubing you have.
Any possible links to suppliers or did you make it yourself. We're using drilled PVC pipe at the moment but this would give a better water flow. 🐟🦈🐡👍

I haven't seen your othet videos yet but i will do shortly. I was going to tell you that the media will be moving under the surface but you pointed that out when you put your hand in..
A lot of people give their new plastic media a potassium permanganate bath before they put it in.
I think if you had less media it would move sooner.
You could remove 200 litres and PP it. Then see how the remainder moves.
Then remove the remainder and put in the PP'd media and compare. If the PP'd media moves better, then PP the rest.
BTW From what i understand, the mefia doesn't HAVE TO move foe it to be effective. There was a bloke on the koi mag forum that only put his air pump on for an hour a day !
Right i'm gonna watch the others now.

(my other channel) I stopped counting once it reached £2k but I was buying everything for trade price and I got the big containers from a friend who charged around £400 for them.
I've since moved the filter to the other side of the pond and linked it to my garden watering system.
I should really do an update on the filter, pond and garden.....
