@@FranzCorrado Sorry but, running Wine requires extra cpu cycles & memory. Thus defeats the purpose of using Linux, and VST bridges should make things more crash prone & unstable than usual, am i right or am i correct..??
@@tredfxman Partially. It really depends on the plugin. Some run flawlessly, some run, but with some issues, some don't run at all. It really depends on which plugin we're talking about. It is true that the bridge requires some extra juice to run, and in some cases can act like a bottle neck for ram/cpu, but with a powerful enough system, it is negligible. For me, there are many purposes to using Linux, one major one being that I don't want apple or Microsoft within 200 yards of my house, so even with the minor drawbacks, I still find it worth is.
@@rebree5137 The condition upon which a VST will or will not work doesn't really depend on how niche or popular a plugin is. It all just depends on what sort of code the plugin uses. I will tell you that most plugins work. Some work better than others, but most are usable. There are still some that do not work stabily or at all. Best practice is to just give it the ol' college try and see if the one you want is working, or ask me, as I have tested a TON of em and might know if the one you want works or not.
In my experience, the most popular plugins are often the ones that don't work, because of all of the DRM stuff that uses very windows specific code. That said, I've managed to get those working too, it's just a bit difficult to make happen.
For example, the vast majority of the waves bundles work great using version 10 or below. Waves 11 and up work but are not stable.
Kontakt works, but its a nightmare to get running and I have experienced memory leaks that lead to crashing. I am told that Kontakt has the same problem on Windows, so I'm not sure if that's a linux issue or just a kontakt issue. I do use it quite often though. I just make sure to use it sparingly and bounce to audio as much as possible.
Spectrasonics works.
Xfer Serum works.
Phaseplant works, but I have experienced some instability.
Sugarbytes works. Rob Papen stuff works, XLN audio works, Tone2 works.
Most FXspansion stuff works, but BFD3 is not stable in my experience. The rest works well.
Those are just a few off the top of my head..
FLUX and Ircam/Flux works perfectly, but only using the airwave-VST bridge. For some reason, linVST and Yabridge don't run those ones well, but airwave does. It may be because airwave lets you choose different prefixes and wine versions per plugin, where the other two default to your system default wine version.
As WINE and the bridges get updated, more and more plugins work. Half of those I just listed did not work a few years ago but work now.

Yes, all of the FL studio and image line stuff that I have tried has worked well with no issues.
I wouldn't recommend running your DAW via wine though. Yes, you can do it and it will work alright, but it will make management of plugins more difficult, as the daw will not see plugins that are installed in other WINE prefixes, and some plugins will need their own prefixes to run properly. It's best to use a DAW that is native to Linux, and then have those detect the bridged versions of the VST plugins. (Reaper, Ardor, Waveform, Qtractor, Bitwig Studio, LMS, etc.)
The top free Serum alternative in my opinion is Vital synth. It has a native Linux version, so no vst bridge is necessary to run that on linux.
MIDI hardware will depend on the company that makes the hardware and if their hardware requires OS specific drivers. Anything class compliant will work immediately in Linux. In many cases, where the company fails to provide scripts/drivers for linux, the community will provide. The DAW you use also plays a role there. You'd have to be more specific about which hardware and scripts you are wanting to use for me to give a direct answer, but chances are that whatever you are using will work fine, or will need a bit of tinkering on your part and then will work fine.
Garuda and PopOS are both fine distros. I personally use MX linux with KDE desktop. Its a debian based distro so its good for beginners and doesn't use systemd or any of the snap-pack crap that Ubuntu/cannonical is pushing.
Whatever debian distro you use, be sure to check out kx.studio for a ton of very useful, free music software and plugins.
You may also want to check out AV linux (www.bandshed.net).
Thats a debian based distro that builds off of MX and is built specifically with audio production in mind. I have my own little setup that I use, so I just run MX and set all the audio stuff up myself, but AV linux is really good as well.
Gaming on MX is great. It runs most steam games, and you can use Lutris for non-steam games. I'm playing Zelda BOTW on a Nintendo switch emulator as we speak. lol.
If you use an NVIDIA GPU there will be some extra steps to get that working properly with proprietary drivers, but it's not too difficult and works fine once you get it going. AMD GPUs work out of the box in linux.

Well, as I said in the video, there are people coming from Windows that are used to their old programs (probably not FOSS at all).
People should come to Linux knowing that they can run those programs via wine and vst bridges.
I am sure this will lead them to FOSS software! That's how I discovered it.
Also, some proprietary VSTs are hard to replace, expecially realistic orchestra samples.. But I hope this thing will change in the future and I can use FOSS software only. Now I still need to use that 10% of proprietary software.
@@FranzCorrado Thanks! Yeah, I guess showing that one doesn't *need* to abandon all software they used before is a good thing to help people transition. As for orchestral stuff - I use Sfizz plugin with Virtual Playing Orchestra and VSCO instruments - with some work they can get the job done - I've made some music for a client using this (for video games BTW).
@@unfa00 Well I use some sfz too! And I mentioned VSCO in the video as well. I love the upright piano and the cymbals.. while other instruments are.. good but not the best ones.
I use a Spitfire via vstbridge and that's really awesome... I would like to replace it with some foss tool...someday! I hope I will be able to do that!

I generally avoid using proprietary software when I can avoid it but I don't take a religious stance on this. I use Bitwig Studio because there is no FOSS DAW that has adopted the same sort of paradigm (tbf, the only other proprietary DAW even that has a similar workflow to Bitwig is Abelton Live). It would be better if it was FOSS of course but their business model gives me confidence that the people behind Bitwig don't have a vested interest in practicing some of the nastier abuses that proprietary systems frequently wreck on their users.
I'm pretty skeptical about the "free market" but in certain cases, it does seem to work fairly well. The DAW market is an example in this regard as having enough competition that companies are nudged into practicing good behavior with their customers.
I started transitioning a couple weeks ago! It sure is a heck of a journey. We reeeeaaaally need more linux oriented content!!! :D

I have Zorin ( in which I think that I had to download Wine ). I'm glad that you mentioned this 'VST bridge'. It may be the thing that motivates me to start using Wine. I really love the streamlining that you get in many distros.
So many other OS eat resources just to function, leaving the budget focused musicians fighting the battle of spending money on audio hardware, or upgrading the computer. Which can often be a disheartening sequence of compromising.
I've released a good number of tracks using an old Dell laptop that has a max memory of 8 Gb.
The lightweight versions of Ubuntu (Lubuntu) takes time to set up and get "right" but the lack of bloated OS demands can give you a cleaner, sharper experience.

ZynAddSubFx and Helm are amazing (Zyn is so complex and confusing at first tho), but want to hear follow up about drum samples, different piano/harpsichord synths, sax synths, orchestral stuff, so on.
I've used reaper and it didn't support lx/lv2 plugins, was very clunky, thanks for showing alternatives, i will try them.

Sorry for the music. Hearing it from the audio monitors made me think that the volume was too low. From my phone was too high so I decided to just lower it down a little bit.. Next time I will fix it :)
(Little off-topic) you can use a rasberry and run these shynth, creating a little digital synth (using a dac and a touchscreen)

I've been using LMMS on Windows for almost two decades. It's saved me a lot of money, and I've been able to do a lot of beats and EDM tracks. When I switched over to Linux Mint, one of the first things I did was install LMMS.

It is nice to learn that people start using linux for music production. I have switched to linux from windows xp some ten years ago, but I am mainly into recording classical chamber music so I don't need all those non-native plugins. I have been happy with it so far, I even run a small business so people pay me to produce their music in linux (actually, most of people don't care what I am using as long as I deliver good quality products)
Pretty happy to learn you are using Linux too! You are right, as long as you create good quality products, people won't care. And it should be like that.
DAWs like Ardour are pretty good for Recording and Mixing/Mastering but, for what I do, not really good for MIDI editing
@@FranzCorrado , If you don't like Ardour you can check other DAWs that run on Linux: Bitwig Studio, Tracktion Waveform, Reaper, these are not FOSS, but their features may better cover your needs.
My reason for using Linux is that I can set up my system as an appliance - minimal install containing just the programs that I need. I am still running Debian 9 on my "music laptop" and I don't feel the urge to update, it is still running as fast as the first day and it uses less than 200MB of RAM on boot. I really can't ask for more :-)

But I like Ardour, it's just that some programs are better suited for your needs.

It's so cool to have just what you need to run your programs without useless waste of resources. I have Debian Testing and I am doing another video about how I setup it.. And it takes just 370 MB of RAM!

I switch to Pop OS a few years ago as a dual boot for software development, and a few.months ago i removed windows and went full Linux. I am now trying out music production and I am glad others doing the same, and that there are some decent DAWs available for Linux.

Awesome video, I know I needed an alternative back in 2017-2018 i can't remember the exact year. But windows created an Update that wiped all my programs and media from my computer. Only way to get it back was to go to old.windows file folder within 7 days or so. We'll I travel for work so I never recovered from that. This was their attempt to get rid of old pirated software from users computers to help the dmca community this is from what I read at the time, of course microsoft denied it. Either way that's when I decided to get serious about making the switch to Linux, I always buy my software and to have to reinstall all my programs, not to mention unfinished projects that were lost, was a pain. Now I strictly do music offline on windows right now, but im ready to put windows to rest and use Linux offline with reaper.
linux is so good for audio, i hated how little control i had in windows. JACK and ALSA took time to learn but well worth the flexibility

Funnily enough - I have performed some (quite astounding) Technomancy on an emachines E430 laptop. It was just kind of gifted to us as they just couldn't be bothered to play the upgrade inside and out game.... So there it was.
Upgraded CPU to an AMD phenomenon II.
The ram got upgraded to a huge 4gb - it's maximum....
New 64gb SSD - put a second drive in via a CD ROM caddy.
Works well.

I'm actually in the process of switching to Linux as well. My only problem on my case is that vocaloid doesn't work in wine. But I can use a virtual machine and make multiple backups of windows and shut off the internet and stop the updates. My windows is just stuck on a boot loop and it's been 2-3 months since my last factory reset. Maybe they're trying to get people to switch to windows 11 idk but I'm hella sick of windows breaking my shit. But for me it's hard because I need vsts for all genres of music. As long as kontakt works, I guess I should be okay though :/ I'm gonna try.
Hello, Have you tested all the programs available on Linux? Ardour, LMMS, etc. Could you make a comparaison between them? It would then be easier to make a choice if we know what they can do. Thank you for this video anyway !
I'm enjoying Lubuntu. I installed Reaper (Windows 32 bit) thinking I could run Waves Central with Wine and import my licensed plug-ins; however, there's an issue with Wine and Wave Central's PowerShell. I did some research but couldn't find any way around this.

Open Source for life! I'm currently planning a build for a new music production PC to replace my laptop for this, and it's so getting Ubuntu Studio installed instead of that glorified ransomware known as Windows 11.
I've been wanting to move to Linux, as a musician, for a while. What's the situation on 32 / 64 bit plugins? Possibly a stupid question. I tend to only use mixing / mastering plugins, and I'm unsure if I'll have the same problem I had when I heard that I can't use my 32 bit software in a 64 bit DAW.
i've been considering switching too, I haven't done much research yet because I figured I would just learn as I go like when I first started. I'm not 100% sure but II believe 64 bit will support both, but 32 bit won't be able to run 64 bit. The only time I had trouble with this is using a 64 bit software for everything but ended up needing a soundfont player that only ran in 32 bit for some reason. I think it will be kind of fun learning what I can and can't do on a new operating system, and excited to find the creative benefits that limiting myself to new tools and lack of knowledge with those tools with the music experience I already have.
Hi, for what I know you can install 64bit version of your plugin using wine. You must resyncbronize the plugins prior to work
Reaper uses 32bit and 64 bit.

I see your mixer on the left side of your desk. Do you use it instead of an interface? if so, why?
Just asking because I have a similar Yamaha mixer that I use with my band but I use a Focusrite for my bedroom studio and I was wondering if I should use the mixer instead. I record out of my guitar amp, bass amp, vocal, and a Korg synth
I tried Ubuntu for music but find using windows vsts with Carla uses a lot more CPU than using them native on windows
I use to use linux to run DAW's but I gave up, because their VST config was so hard, it was too hard and very buggy. This was around 2011, WINE was horrible too. Has it gotten better?

I'm not able to find drivers fo my RME Fireface UC USB audio interface, i look on RME forums already and seems that there's only an outdated reverse engineering project with hints on how build your own Linux driver for the UC using the Windows driver, too bad 'cause for Windows and macOS there's super updated drivers, last is from July of this year, if someone has any idea, please let me know, thanks.

What do you think it's best, to learn music production in windows and then translate the knowledge to linux software, or learn on linux? I've been using linux as my main OS for the last 5 years, so I wouldn't be new to linux, just to music production and audio work in general :)

Mmmm.. IMO if you want to try Linux for audio production, start learning on it.
These way, you'll get familiar with all the stuff available (Native plugs, bridges, DAWs) from the beginning instead of learning stuff on Win and re-learning again the same stuff with different plugs and interfaces.. Obviously, when you learn something, it's the same on every OS.. you just have to learn the differences for example between DAW 1 vs DAW 2..but.. if you are already on Linux, I'll definitely go for it!

I have been using the "white" Macbook 2007 running Kali linux (now version 2020.4 ) for quite some time,
and I have Ableton Live, FL Studio 10, Samplitude, LMM, and the old trusty cool edit 2, Steinberg Wavelabs with Izotope IO 5, and some nice modern VSTs working fine etc...via Wine without any problems,
of course I erased the original and useless Mac OS Lion it came with.
Linux made this older Mac to be useful again. besides hacking, I can make some Music.
Oh nice! Are you really running all those programs via wine? That's crazy! Can't believe Wavelabs and FL studio just work using wine without problems!

@@FranzCorrado Hello. yes, all that software I mentioned and even more I didn´t mentioned runs fine using Wine, the ones I was most surprised are FL Studio 10 and the mastering suite Izotope 5, some VSTs work some others don´t, but I still keep testing a lot of good software I have collected through years, so Im not done yet.
@@AriannaEuryaleMusic That's nice to know. I would probably never run a DAW through wine or a mastering program (that sounds a little scary) since there are good alternatives on Linux and while Wine for VSTs and plugin is VERY good, I never tried it with a DAW or bigger programs.
But I am happy somebody can make them run without even using a VM!

I used to play a MIDI controller with Ardour using their synth sounds, but SOMETIMES, when I restart the program, I lose all my presets and I have no idea why. Any ideas? This was the only reason I switched back to Windows.
I don't think Linux is there for music production yet unless you're willing to put in a lot of time to get it working, real shame cause Linux is very interesting.
What is the DAW that you are using?

Hello. This is a vast topic and I think it would be better to talk about that in a separate video (also to gather more info)
Btw I use wine vst and native lv2 plugins without any difference in latency at all. It's like using those plugins (VSTs) on Windows.
As for Hardware drivers, usually I just plug in my audio interface and it works without installing anything (Presonus and Behringer audio interfaces and Yamaha midi keyboard). JACK as a driver would be my choice and I am waiting for any news on Pipewire because looks promising.

Don't get me wrong, I am very interested in all RT Linux features, but at the moment it's not suitable for working with sound at all.
Wine and other "not-emulators" - are not an option. CC mode in devices - is not a solution.

I asked for the older model (gen2) instead they sent me gen3. That's why it has this problem of options available only via software.
Good thing we have Surge and Vital. Both free and can be used on Linux
Free and open, vital is ported to vitalium on disthro ports, and nice have synth!but i love surge for my rock prodution, and x42 hammond (setbfree)

I could not get native instruments or sforzando to work properly on linux using WINE. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Strange, I used sforzando under wine for a long time before switching to sfizzz but I know nothing about native.
Are you trying to launch them inside a DAW?
@@FranzCorrado Yes. The operating system was Ubuntu Studio, and I was trying to run sforzando in Wine. The program ran, but it was buggy. The text elements didn't show correctly. Native instruments was a total nightmare for me. If I could get everything to work seamlessly, I'd switch to linux.
@@notstating241 mmm sforzando not displaying text properly in wine is a known problem. Maybe you want to override some settings in wine config. Just check on wineHQ. Apart from that, it runs very well.

Linux Audio Production is not what people tend to go for, I have used FL Studio with Linux before but I got tired of installing Wine with FL Studio as well as I wanted something native to Linux such as LMMS... I tried LMMS back in 2017 and its very efficient for my simple workflow and I like it. I have Aurdor 5 waiting for me to use it but I do play with it time to time.
LMMS can sound like FL Studio in the right hands! I hear no difference in the output from LMMS verses FL Studio but my Talent and Hard work I put into the Music, sure it looks dated but LMMS (in my book) 1 of the best DAWs out there for what you get with it also the quality in the right hands!
LMMS is no different to FL Studio but without Live Audio Recording, the Plug-in Presets are GOOD for a FOSS DAW too.
We have pretty good native Linux DAWs nowadays (FOSS and non-FOSS) That I won't suggest anyone running a DAW using wine.. LMMS is nice but if you want to try Ardour just run ardour 6! Much better than 5!
LMMS is nice for a very specific workflow but if you need something like live recording mix/mastering ardour is much better on that front.
And I have to disappoint you but rn I have the default monocolor Win95 background on my desktop lol I will setup cmatrix for next video!

@@FranzCorrado I work a little faster in LMMS than I ever did in FL Studio due the simplicity as a former FL Studio user, I collected Gigs of 1-shots and loops as well.

I thought your setup was awesome from what I saw! MIDI in Linux is FAR BETTER than Windows' MIDI support due to Linux having Driverless Kernel Modules.

I know Linux MIDI is better than Windows. That's one of the first things I noticed making my yamaha midi keyboard work at first try while In Windows I needed many restarts.

My 2004 Yamaha DGX-305 needs a driver in Windows - In Linux it doesn't, I can't remember how MIDI in linux works, my DAC works under Linux but in Windows its a giant paper weight... I could go on and on about my experiences with Linux Music Production under Linux.

I recommend you to use only FOSS programs to help grow up the projects and also
help developers monetarily
I use almost 100% of FOSS software. Unfortunately some software is really difficult to replace but I am sure this will change soon :)
@@FranzCorrado you can still use commercial software and donate do similar FOSS projects. This is what I do because I am sometimes bound to use commercial software for specific jobs but I do feature requests and donate money on a regular basis
I use FOSS with exception of spitfire audio and Valhalla supermassive. There is no good FOSS orchestra. YET.
Linux needs support from proprietary software studios so I can use Reaktor, East West Quantum Leap, the Abbey Road mastering stuff, etc. And i also want to use my interface hardware with proper low latency. I like making music, and windows is getting increasingly on my nerves, but I want my sounds, plugins and libraries to work. And to not spend a weekend trying and failing to build wifi drivers from source 😂.
Are you using Ardour for windows in WINE? Native Linux version of Ardour is free. as is Reaper. I use Harrison Mixbus, which is built on Ardour. It's $89 but it goes on sale often. worth every penny.
Reaper is not free on Linux but still the updates go a long way for 60 bucks

TLDR: You switched to Linux because you couldn't afford a PC powerful enough for music production on Windows, which I think is a completely fine thing to do, though I wouldn't recommend everyone else to do the same 😅
Don't get me wrong, I love most free linux-based OSes and use them on a daily basis (both privately and for work), but it still takes *a lot* of getting used to as a complete linux noob. For those who already have or plan to get a beefy PC with plenty of ram and a fast enough CPU, learning linux may just be a huge waste of time that they could've used to get better at producing music on Windows instead.
Anyone got Native Instruments Komplete to run under Linux yet?
Never tried that but, to be sure, go to wineHQ and search for the program so you can see how well it works under wine

I mean, sure there's AudioGridder server/client which leverages whole VM elsewhere, but again using Linux in that production chain only adds limitation without any real advantage
