Here’s the problem, Mario. No one in the Digimon community has the money to spend $10k on a single card, and if they do, they have enough sense not to.
I just want to talk about the prize of Lorcana tops cards. Yes, the prize cards in Lorcana sell for much more. But this has nothing to do with the card's playability itself, it just depends on the popularity of the IP and the number of players/fans of the IP. If somebody wins an Ultimate Cup Gallantmon Crimson Mode, that is a sick prize, and might sell for a lot. The prize is rare enough that playability of the card has barely any influence on the prize, imo. The problem is that nobody wants to buy these cards for that much because Digimon is simply not such a popular IP. It is a gamble to buy such a popular Digimon card, as the long-term value is not guaranteed.
In Lorcana or One Piece however, there is fucking Disney or the most popular Manga of all time behind it. If I buy the equivalent of a Gallantmon Crimson Mode Ultimate Cup, but make it a Mickey Mouse or a Luffy (it doesn't matter which actual card it is), these cards have more long-term value and also might increase in prize. But this has just to do with the IP, not the prizing itself.
Surely, prizes could always be improved, but Lorcana cards being so expensive is just hype and people that want to speculate and sell for more. The Digimon market is much more "healthy" imo concerning the value of these cards, because most people I know, buy these hyper-rare cards to just collect and not to sell later. Thus, these cards sell for a collection prize, not for an inflated sell-it-in-5-years prize.
I mean as per Lorcana prizing… it’s Disney… Disney people spend Disney money, isn’t really apples to apples there haha
Yes definitely not apples to apples. Disney as an IP is LEAGUES ahead of Bandai, let alone with Digimon.
Quite the difference from a game with a JP company (Bandai, Konami) to a NA company (WoTC, Disney, Pokémon NA), in JP there is quite a stigma that card games are played for fun, not to earn an income so that is why there is an abysmal difference in the culture of prizing between games and it will be quite hard to get a JP game to provide cash prizing. On the other hand, they could really improve the cards they give away on event packs, participation sets so they are more attractive, ultimate cups prizing it atrocious as if you do not play red hybrid the prizes do nothing for you and it will be the same if you try to sell them, as they are not a generic card that can fit any red deck, it will be difficult for you to sell it
Videos like this really make me wonder how the market justifies the prices of cards like Magnamon X. Also, who is buying these prize cards for thousands of dollars and to what avail? Yugioh especially has it bad given how much money Konami makes off that game.
Hit the nail on the head with the fact that we need more events
Hopefully down the road Digimon improves with its prizing cards. To me a lot of them are just cards I throw in a binder and never see again. Personally I just want to see the game grow more so that we can have more in person events!
Im still waiting to actually get my prize support from a Regionals in April...
We just can't compare to these other card games without a ratio of players being considered and cost calculated. These Pokémon tournaments cost up to $70 to enter and have up to triple the number of entrants. Not to mention you're looking at up to 15 rounds for these larger tournaments with a top cut.
If we want tournaments that are the scale and quality of the larger games then we need to both grow the player base and increase the cost of entry.
Would love to get to a place where playing/creating Digimon content full time could become a career like we see with the Pokemon TCG. That's not super feasible right now as the community is a little too small imo.
I don't play and win any of these prizes so I'm not really affected. I would like to see more local tournaments and maybe those lead to regional tournaments, etc. More prize packs handed out for those local trnys would be nice of course. As for digimon having high priced cards...I'm kind of happy that it doesn't and that the playable cards are always obtainable. Plus it keeps scalpers away from our tcg if there's no money to be made based on speculation or hype.
Every card came does better than YGO, Konami seems to hate its players for some reason
I always thought special prize cards were tacky. I much prefer large scale prize support be x amount of dollars in products i.e. packs, boxes, cases, etc.
Lorcana is full of fools, people throwing money around.
Meta Zoo had these fools too, and that's dead now. So they had to go somewhere.
Probably some spill over from pokemon (TYPE FANS) " believes the cards will be worth WAY MORE IN THE FUTURE. Then end up with piles of junk slabs, after the market shows the values tank.
Disney is big so people believe that it'll all jump, but current day Disney isn't what people remember when they thing about the old characters.
It's not 90s vintage, and when you see people treat it like that. Then it's probably a bubble.
The game is becoming unbalanced with FREE COST effects. So they got to not let that go unchecked.
But hey people get rich off fools money.
As a vendor I have never had so much trouble selling high value digimon cards. I think the playerbase is small right now and I am not sure what Bandai could do to make it better, since they clearly favor one piece.
I mean, obviously you throw money into the game that nets you the most money
One Piece as a brand is way bigger than Digimon could ever be unfortunately.
You just have to win. I want some more non weekend tournaments both online and in person.
I also am hurt we didn’t have any double header in person regionals this year.
If you are at the skill level I don’t think it’s too hard to consistently top digimon events at the moment.
Pokémon vgc due to more rng I feel has a harder time consistently topping.
Pokemon tcg is another tcg so you can repeat results fairly well.
Pokemon is also a much higher player cap and being 2 days can be taxing.
9 rounds of digimon is also taxing.
I lost to Hoang in round 8 then to Brennan in round 9 in overtime. Digimon emperor hurts nume’s aggro super hard.
My take is that TCG’s like MTG & Pokemon have a higher prizing due to how long the game has been around and also popularity. TCG’s like one piece and now Lorcana have high $$ prize cards due to collectors (IP) and also being very new. I play digimon and would like to see them do more prize cards that are eternally playable like a Venusmon or deathxmon or if they were to have cards that were relevant to the current meta and not dead cards like when we had Gallantmon alts for over a year.
I wish Digimon was more popular, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare prize prices as less people demand Digimon and that means people are not willing to drop 5 figures of dollars on them
You skipped Flesh and Blood.
give new art on the participant cards like they did for the lv6's SR at the time would help a lot
Prize support is something I care about. Ty for making the video.
