Affordaplane Mistake on my Affordaplane landing gear!

    Hi there. In years gone by i used to build hang gliders. There we were advised to double swage the cables. This was done for safety sake.
    The tool i used was know as the Nicopress system. Its not so tidy but it works really well.
    Yes, use the firrel advised and double swage as you suggested. Can not have too much safety. Your ass depends on it.

    I have a vague recollection that when you double swage, you put a small piece of slack between the swagings. That way, in preflight, you can see if the first swage has slipped because the slack no longer exists.

      You can also put a paint or marker line the length of the swedge assembly, and then take a quick look at each fitting during your preflight and see if you see any signs of movement or shifting. ANY gap or space that shows in the line means movement, and should be investigated.

    You have a great spirit and you are very inspiring.Your plane is very nice and a joy to look at. BUT! Most things on a plane are about tension and compression and all the connecting ends MUST line up and there are many on your landing gear that don't. All fixation points should line up center with center or you should fine another way to make the assembly so they line up. You are creating torssions and miss alinement right now and this is why your parts are getting disstorded and off alinement.
    I have built and made parts for plane for over thirty years now and If you need some hints, you are welcome to communicate with me. There are very simple things to know when you design things with load and once you know them you will never get caught again. Keep that spirit, we love this! Regards,

      Thank you, The designer gave us a great starting point and your are right , I am discovering both the strengths and weaknesses of the project as I progress further and further down the rabbit hole!

    Not knowing if you have checked, of course; But... at the upper end of the cables, is it possible that
    the stainless mounting brackets are rotating? (Could happen as the cable stresses are on one side.)
    If so, that would account for the slack in the cables. Are those u-shaped stainless brackets moving?

    Forget swedging lean to spice in an eye with thimble..... And make your splices longer than required....instead of having 4 swedges loop cables wrap twist then use one swedge for all your landing gear will take the most abuse and cutting failure points is good..... Of course you could use amsteel with thimbles as well..... Or plain wire..... For landing gear making them from carbon fiber tubing is lighter than aluminum and 4 times stronger ateel.... This is a really good place to use Carbon..... Just seen to many landing gear failures over the years..... It's the one place that is almoat always under engineered

    I have revised the airfoil profile somewhat and am using capped ribs but I see more and more the need for a d-box or at least a mylar sheet over the leading edge, the sag between ribs of the standard tube-rib wing is for me unacceptable and absolutely affects performance/efficiency of the wing

      It has not been an issue for me, the performance range is so limited on these planes that you will see marginal change if any.

    Don't forget those bolt threads in the front and rear

      Those bolts are faced forward due to clearance concerns on the back side where the brackets and tubes connect.

    Hi Terry, shouldn't bolt heads point up and in the direction of flight?

      I'm sure by aviation best practices, you are right. Being that I am following a set of plans, and this is an ultralight I have adhered to the design. I also noticed that, and in some cases bolts are installed a certain way for clearance issues.
