Had Mr Mead asked the nameless academic whether her college would feature great figures from Appalachia - instead of 'great white men' - my guess is he would've received a very different answer. The reason the false equivalency is beneath Mean is because the roots of Black descendants of slavery were severed, due to prohibitions against speaking their native languages and family separation. I've never heard celebrations of Irish or Italian culture described as racist. But 'whiteness' was and is a project of racial subjugation, not an identity among others to recognize. This is why 'White Pride' means something very different than 'Black Pride'. That there's a segment of European and even Latin Americans who still feel protective of 'white' prerogatives is something to be overcome and admonished, not something to coddle or stoke.
