I'd like to think that Auntie Whispers just didn't think of using the bell like that, like that the idea just never came to her. For me I interpret it like a kid turning 18 and their adopted parent fearing that they won't want anything to do with them now that they can make their own decisions. At the end of the show during the credits we do see them reading together by the window and Auntie Whisper pouring her niece tea (if I remember correctly ). I think by the end of the show they've worked out a more healthy relationship since Launa is allowed to have free time and they seem to be getting along well, with Auntie Whisper going as far as to do a chore for her.
I think of Auntie Whisper as a strict parent figure learning to give back control and be understanding of the other's needs. Also I love Tim Curry so much 🥰 he's been with me from early childhood into adulthood.

Interesting take. I like how you point out the resolution of their relationship at the conclusion of the story.

Yeah. That’s was more or less how I felt. She was doing the only think she knew how to keep her niece from eating people. She didn’t kill her niece because she loved her but knew idle hands are the devil’s workshop.

This is pretty much exactly how I interpted this, it also fits the plot since, imo the episode is not just about control but sets the scene for the next upcoming theme, that being loneliness.

Piggybacking on that, it’s probably why she doesn’t thank them for doing it, as (with the knowledge that she could have) it should have been her own responsibility, though in the same breath, it had not occurred to her to try.
To that end, it’s likely a mix emotion far from simple that hit her when she heard what happened, with not a lot of time to process all of them.
Relief, guilt, shock, dread, uncertainty… but, Launa seems to be herself, so Whispers has to pick a lane. And while she could have gone with ‘gratitude,’ she understands that it should never have been up to a stranger to fix a situation she might have been able to correct herself.
      Perhaps

I think the main theme of the show is that sometimes people cling to stupid solutions out of fear of the unknown. This is true about almost every character in the show. It probably did not even occur to Auntie Whispers to expel the demon with the bell. The two brothers encounter many similar situations of people trapped in a problem with an obvious solution.
It's these experiences that help Wirt with his final confrontations in the show.

Interesting, I had interpreted it as an example of crystalised intelligence & fluid intelligence; that Auntie Whispers had gotten the bell (possibly from Adelaide) with the instructions that it could be used to control the demon, because she's elderly and relies heavily on crystalised intelligence, and follows the instructions as they were given to her, keeping Lorna & the demon busy. However, because Wirt & Greg are younger, they rely heavily on fluid intelligence and are able to think of using the bell to command the demon to leave Lorna entirely.
I feel Auntie Whisper's reaction is in part from the realisation that she could have solved the problem years ago and built a genuine relationship in that time, as well as having come to care about her, but believing that since Lorna is a young woman now and their relationship has only been the limbo we see them in at the start of the episode, that Lorna has no reason to stay and will leave her alone in the house. If it was Adelaide that gave her the bell, it may even be that her warning not to trust her sister is partially from realising that her sister never told her the full abilities of the bell and cost them that time.

Personally I wonder if the bell wasn't made by Adelaide in her pursuit of a child servant. Then stolen by her sister who didn't know fully how it functioned and didn't realize it controlled the demon inside and not the girl it inhabited. No proof of course but I think that's not unlikely given how Adelaide is and the lengths she's willing to go to.

Interesting, I thought maybe Lorna's first victims were her biological parents, Auntie Whispers adopted her (possibly being in possession of abilities that kept the demon from targeting her) and got the bell from Adelaide to protect the other people in the area, but the instructions were limited to commanding the demon, and by extension, Lorna to do chores. In that time, Auntie Whispers came to genuinely care for Lorna, but did not expect her to reciprocate her familial love because of what she'd hade to do; thus she expected Lorna to leave as soon as she was free, and regretted that she never thought to order the demon away, and lost all of those years that they could have been a proper family.
It's also interesting to think of her as having what Adelaide wanted, but never wanted it herself and felt remorseful about it (doubly so considering the setting is based on an era when people could and did adopt children to be servants, there were still people who adopted out of genuine care, but it was a matter of luck)

Maybe Auntie Whispers was lonely and kept Lorna dependent on her because she feared that if Lorna was cured she would simply leave. This might be why at the end Auntie Whispers tears up until Lorna hugs her, reassuring Whispers that Lorna isn't just going to abandon her now that she doesn't rely on her.

Nice video. Auntie Whispers is a very intreating character and fantastic story device. There is something oddly sinister about how she controls Lorna with the bell (from a seemingly... naive, at best place of origin.) Perhaps the thought to use the bell to get rid of the curse itself didn't occur to her, as @BriarRose suggest. I however have another theory. At the end of this episode it is revealed that Auntie Whispers is Adelaide's sister. If we recall, Adelaide was in search of someone to do her bidding also... a "child" to do her work for her. Adelaide wanted to control the child much the same as Auntie Whispers did, though perhaps with worse intentions for the child. The parallels between the two are a brilliant device, as are the parallels between Lorna and Wert. When you look at this episode, you see that the animation of Wert and Lorna are almost identical. They are literally almost mirror images of each other where at times it is just Wert in a bonnet & dress, or Lorna wearing a red pointed hat and a cape. I believe this shows that the two are both experiencing a similar struggle in the "Unknown". The path both seem to be challenged with are coming into "their own" of who they are. This is a very common struggle for kids their age and can often leave one feeling like they are struggling through a dense wood of "Unknowns". Lorna is involuntarily controlled by a curse and unable to make decisions for herself, while accepting the role she fulfills. Wert inversely, is cursed/still struggling with accepting the role he fulfills "The Pilgrim" ("the master of his own destiny" and "hero of the love story") and voluntarily chooses to yield control of his decisions/fate to anyone or any circumstance, as Beatrice points out in the beginning of the third episode "School Town Follies". In short I believe the entire Auntie Whispers episode is about mirroring.

Auntie Whisper's likeness to the demon made me think that she herself merged with the one inside her. But she was afraid that Lorna won't be able to do the same, so she have been putting away that moment, until demon possessed Lorna and she couldn't withstand it. It's like a parent being overprotective of the child, sheltering and keeping them constantly busy, but in the end the child is inept to face the world and collapses under it's weight, giving in to self-destruction. Also, the demon merging with the soul is the case of Auntie Whisper, but not Lorna's, which means that child can choose different path in life.

to me over the garden wall is wart and greg experiencing a series of fairytale and those tales are heavily symbolic and embody story archetypes. characters actions don't always make sense and neither does the world because each element is trying to impart knowledge and understanding. in fairy tales you can be killed and boiled by a witch but you can brought back to life by the younger third sibling by them gathering together your parts. each character the boys met are trying to teach them but its shrouded by metaphor and symbolism so it is difficult to understand. by not learning these lessons they become prey to ignorance and fear. its when greg grasps the nature of the beast through what he has experienced is when he and greg are able to be brought back into the waking world.

I think its also a reading of the overwhelming mother archetype, even having the best interests, a caretaker becomes a tyrant that ends up stomping on the growth of the person on their care, its not black or white, and thats why its natural that they reconcile at the end.

my asmption as to why auntie didn't get rid of the spirit. is cause she might not fully know about how the bell worked. she might have feared that removing the spirit might also remove lorna's spirit. due to the fact the bell works on lorna, that lorna and the spirit might be tied.
auntie is old. she might not fully be able to move on from the past ways and is just doing the wrong thing with good intentions. She's a lonely old woman who was afraid of being left behind. doing what she thought was right to keep her family safe.
7:53 it might not have been the control. but rather, she was just scared her niece will abandon her. She's an old woman who seems quite lonely, and someone who has difficulty letting go.

I always thought of her telling Lorna to clean and stuff to keep her busy and not have the spirit go and hunt down people to eat (and to help around the house) Also pretty sure Auntie Whispers didn't think of banishing the spirit

I feel that Adelaide was the one that cursed the niece and not whispers. Because why refer to her as her niece and not her adopted daughter? Unless Adelaide was the one who adopted her and cursed her to use her as a servant.
Until her sister auntie whisper came and took her and if she assumed Adelaide was stronger with magic then her she probably would’ve never thought of using the bell to free her niece.

A bit late here, but I've been rewatching the series a bit too many times these days, and I'm kind of struggling to find the right theory for pottsfield. In the ending credits, you see Enok at the end of a row of the inhabitants next to what I believe is the dark lantern. Though seconds later you see that Enok is only the cat. Can't really find the right words in my mind for it to kind of make sense, but maybe there is something more to it? I haven't watched anything from you except from this video being coincidentally on my feed, so I don't know if you're all around theories, but I would like to hear someone else's opinion.

It’s weird… weird as in this honestly has a lot of humility, I see this series could been another regular show, one of the greats of Cartoon Network, but the creators just wanted it to be this, a mini series… why? Not that it takes anything away but there is so much that I want but yet I was satisfied???, the ending beatiful the story amazing.

I always interpreted it that Lorna was maybe sent to Aunty Whispers by her family after she became demon possessed. As Whispers is a powerful witch like her sister Adelaide. Which would mean that Whispers made the bell for Lorna, hence it’s resemblance to her.
Maybe Whispers just didn’t realize you could use the bell that way, or she wanted to keep Lorna with her after growing attached. I think her sadness when Lorna’s curse is broken is because she thinks Lorna will leave her alone. Maybe Aunty Whispers has taken in other children to help with curses and they’ve always left her once it is lifted.

I think auntie Wispers put the demon inside the girl and the bell controls the demon, not the girl, and she is lying the whole time. Its similar with how narcissistic parents play the victim and make the kid seem to be the problem. It's been a while since I've seen the episode though it's just the impression I get from the clips shown in the video.

In the ending where it shows the characters during winter, Lorna is still living with Auntie Whispers, so they both genuinely seem to care for eachother. Auntie probably had nothing to do with the demon, and either never thought of using the bell to banish it, or feared Lorna would leave her alone if she did. Fortunately they both get a good ending because of Wirt and Greg.
