8-bit is music in it's most raw form... Check out old NES game soundtracks converted by London Philharmonic Orchestra or the like (also any early works of Nobou Uematsu for Squaresoft) and you'll hear some amazing music.

I'm imagining some mario style sprite game where an anime sprite with black hair, pale skin and black clothes is running to the right, jumping over pits and other obstacles to save the lives of all his friends from various dangers, but the cut scenes have him too late or powerless as his friends die. Then, in the final level, beating the game will show that he's lost himself and died aswell.
