Thanks for all the informative videos this year! They have truly helped me with purchasing decisions, especially the product comparison videos. You’re a curly hair blessing!! Thanks so much and looking forward to your videos in 2022!!
I like to use Kinky Curly Curling Custard as my cream and top with another gel. My hair always turns out great when I do that. Also the kinky curly knot today leave in, the Dove gel, and the Hairitage smoothing oil are favorites.
Love the yearly favorites videos. They’re some of my favorites. I’ve been using the Cake Curl Friend curl cream and loving it. It’s so smooth and creamy, but still light weight and gives me a great results. It does contain silicone, but I don’t worry too much about that. For drug store leave ins I really like the Curls blueberry bliss leave in.
I like cake curl cream too, I like how it's lotion like, which I prefer because my fine hair can be easily weighed down, but since it's also high porosity I still need moisture. I don't mind silicone either, especially in a curl cream or leave in. It's an excellent heat protectant!
I also love Curlsmith, particularly the styling soufflé, Aqua Gel, Flexi Jelly, and the Air Dry Cream. I watch many UA-cam videos for curly hair, but yours are definitely my favorite. They contain so much valuable information, presented in an entertaining yet professional way. Thank you!
Excellent video, thank you for breaking it all down for us. It gets overwhelming with so many options and this truly simplifies it. Much appreciation and happy and healthy new year 😊
I'd LOVE it if you can do a video on why some "coveted" curly products that everyone raves about make my hair feel like straw the second it touches my hair. From gels, to mousses, to leave-ins and more, this happens to me often. I hate trying new products because my hair seems to be sensitive to something in the ingredients, and I don't know what :(
Check to see if those products have coconut oil in them. My hair severely reacts to it and turns to straw. I will not use any product with coconut oil or any coconut byproduct in it. Hope you can figure it out.
I really like that one too - just used it last night in fact, which was my 2nd time using it. I pair it with a small amount of another gel on top for a bit more hold.
Hi Gena, As one of you older subbies who has tried just about every product out there over time...I have fallen in love with the Curl Smith line...it's nearly the only product line I use even though I have a plethora sitting on my shelves. I have had to go through the Curl Smith line to see which ones work the best on my hair (gray/white/silver coarse curly)...but it has been so worth it. I can certainly understand why you had so many of the products in your review. I need to try the oil next. Happy New Year
Just found your channel and I am super excited to learn more about curls and how to care for them! I have stopped using a straightener for years now but I knew nothing about maintaining curls. Time to binge watch all your videos!
I love the innersense color shampoo & conditioner! I'm also a big fan of the bounce curl conditioners & curlsmith multitasking conditioner. I just tried the AG nourishing snow mushroom mask which is a moisture only mask that my hair loving! Makes my hair feel like butter! I recently found a great drugstore clarifying shampoo - it's the Pacifica invigorating & purifying rosemary shampoo. They also have a great conditioner called hydro luxe vegan silk protein conditioner that's moisturizing without weighing your hair down. I like very few drug store products but those 2 are in my rotation. I've been loving the Aveda botanical repair strengthening leave in treatment too. I usually use it in place of a curl cream. It has the same bond building ingredients that curlsmith uses and everytime I use it my curls look amazing! My 2 favorite "new" products of the year are the Ouidad coil infusion good shape defining gel & the AG curl fresh definer. I could go on all day about my favs so I'll just leave it at that lol
thank you! I love hearing people favorites so I can do a little playing :). I'm a more wavy curly girl and I absolutely love most of the Ecoslay line. My favorites are the new Chai Latte "shampoo ", the Rice pudding leave-in and my Holy grail for guaranteed results, I can put it over anything is the Orange Marmalade. I also love their Matcha boost. Just throwing it out there...lol!
Fav curl cream: Kenra curl defining Creme Fav gel: curlsmith styling Soufflé, Dippity do gel, Not Your Mother’s curlTalk sculpting Gel. Fav mousse: Living Proof Full thickening mousse Fav finisher : Kenra Dry volume blast ( I use this only when I need extra extra volume)
I discovered Umberto Giannini towards the end of this year and I adore everything I’ve tried! The Scrucnhing Jelly and Curl Whip Mousse have become my favourite styler combination - I get good hold when I layer them and the mousse gives me great volume. I also tried some Curlsmith products, which I really like!
I am such a CurlSmith fan too but I fell in love with the Bounce Curl Cream you talked about. It is just mind blowing. I use it with the In Shower Style Fixer gel. am going to have to try the Ouidad gel though. I know you are a fan so I have to give it a shot.
Love all your reccs, thank you for all of your content. Need to try the Ouidad one, I didn't enjoy the white bottle one. The AG Curl Fresh Definer has been a game changer for my fine wavy hair.
I love your videos! They’ve helped me so much this year as I transition into my natural curls. My fave curly products are from Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross! Her hydration shampoo, heavy conditioner, leave- in & strong hold gel are my holy grail for 2021! I also like Eva nyc’s curl cream, refreshing sprays and the 10-in-1 primer. Would love to see your review on Pattern & Eva NYC 💗
Love most of your picks 💯✌️ however Ouidad doesn’t do it for me I’m a Kinky Curly or Dipity Do for gel. I have some products to try. Never knew Derma e had hair products!
Hey! Thank you so much for your videos. They are very helpful and i cant wait to try some of your tips.Im into reviving my 2c-3-a curls after a lot of flat ironing and bleaching...ouf. 😳 I am amazed by ouidad gel you are using but it seems unavailable on amazon .
I would like to see you review Eden Bodyworks hair products. I’ve heard a lot about this brand, i always see it at walmart and it’s also on most curly hair websites..
Thanks for the video. There are no Innersense products in it - is it just that they didn’t meet the cut or has something happened to make you go off them?
Hi Gena, I have been using some As I Am products, I need you to check them out and leave some reviews, I personally love them and they have left me with some WOW with my hair being that I am in the beginning of my Curly hair journey 💖 thank you for you vids 🥰
Just found out after a bit of research on a mask product I'm interested in buying I've been using hair masks wrong. I've always used them in place of conditioner as they are obviously a deeper treatment but according to google and the product website they should be used between shampoo and conditioner. I've never had any issues using masks in place of conditioner (bar slight frizz but my hair is fine texture I think anyway) but it just surprises me that I never knew. The mask I'm using currently is an old one left over from a few years ago by dove, their curls range, discontinued in 2017/18 I believe. The pot instructions basically just say (not word for word) after shampoo apply onto wet hair leave on 3-5 mins and rinse. that implies to me use instead of conditioner
I use deep conditioners in place of conditioner all the time. If I still use conditioner, I usually use conditioner after shampoo just to detangle and get out of the shower, then apply deep conditioner to damp hair, let it sit, and rinse then style.
Thank you for all your research! I'm somewhat new to the curly world and have been using the NYM curl talk line. Recently found our the curl cream is not CGM approved. If I continue using it do I need to clarify more often? Appreciate all your information!
Hey Gena! For a drugstore leave in do you still like the Treluxe leave in? Also what would be your recommendation for a drugstore protein deep conditioner! Thanks so much ❤️
Yes, I love that leave-in! I guess I just considered that a high end option versus traditional drugstore. I would even prefer that TreLuxe leave in over the Giovanni. For protein deep conditioner, the Shea moisture strengthen & restore: rstyle.me/cz-n/enn5qxvz6w
Hi Gena I have your same hair type but longer. What other gels are good drug store brands? Right now the only one I found to work for me was the dep. But I ha very to use a lot
I can't use Glycerin, did you realize only 4 products out of the 18 didn't have Glycerin? (and 2 were the oils). So really I could only even try 2 products. With so many curly girls who cut out Glycerin, I would have hoped you would have included more products without it.
I finally know since a few months (after years of struggling) that I have seborrheic dermatitis. I had to use a medical shampoo for 6 weeks and then started with the curly girl methode because it sounded good to me. I had wavy hair but in my teenage years I always straight it. But I miss my waves for many years already. So I hoped to get more wavy hair again. I got some information by watching videos. Ordered some products. But a bit later I searched for more information on the seborrheic dermatitis. I know now that I need a medical shampoo all the time. I have no itchy scalp yet but of course with all the products in the CGM it won’t take long. Do you have tips? Is the curlsmith pro-biotic line a good option instead of a medical shampoo? Do I have to do things different or not use something like a leave-in? I can barely find anything about the CGM in combination with seborrheic dermatitis. I have coarse hair, low(/normal?) porosity, normal elasity and 2B/2C (maybe even 3A) curls.
Hi Kimberly! I had a lot of symptoms of seb derm for *years* and finally cleared it almost all the way up after learning about which ingredients feed the malassezia yeast that can cause the itching and breakouts, and avoiding them. You probably will still need a medicated shampoo periodically, but after your skin is stable you may only need it occasionally for maintenance. You need to watch out for oils (like coconut oil), esters, and polysorbates. Kinky-Curly has a shampoo and leave-in that are safe, also Neutrogena T/sal and some drugstore mousses including Herbal Essences and Pantene curl mousse. Hard water buildup can make skin issues worse so if you have hard water, look into a water softener or a chelating shampoo (you can identify those by the packaging which should say that it removes mineral and chlorine). The website "simpleskincarescience" has an article all about it and a list of some safe products in many categories.
Because the Ouidad gel has humidity-blocking ingredients. It's humid most months out of the year, so it's what I reach for a lot. However the Souffle works really well in mild or cold weather. It does not have humidity-blocking ingredients so I don't use it as much in the summer.
Hi Gena.. Thanks for your video.. Just bought Dove gel... But for me it's a flop... I'd doesn't create cast... And it has not a strong hold... I used a good amount and I add it... But nothing... 😕
Really!? Im surprised because I find it to be pretty strong hold. Did you use a very moisturizing curl cream under it or style soaking wet? Those will soften things and prevent a cast from forming.
I use a curl cream.. I use it with all the gels without problem... I have to try it without cream... But the second day no hold... In the bottle I can't find strong hold...right?
Hi Gena! I'm new to your channel. Your videos are great. This is an unrelated question but I'm hoping you can help me. I pineapple my hair for sleeping, sleep on satin pillowcase. When I go to wash my hair, the entire nape is tangled so badly, like a birds nest. I don't know why it happens or how to prevent it. I don't sleep crazy or rub my head around so I don't understand why it's happening. Thanks for any suggestions. I use spray detangler to try to gently brush the tangles before washing but I still feel like I'm losing a lot of hair because of it. 😢
@@lesliemartin5559 - can I bother you again to ask where kinky curly products can be bought too in US? I’m building up a list of products! My cousin may need to buy an extra suitcase! Thanks

After trying all the brands, I will only use the Briogeo Curl Charisma line or Innersense line using their shampoos, masks, conditioners, cremes and gels. For curl reactivation, I use Aussie Curl Reactivating Spray and for clarifying shampoo, I use Neutrogena shampoo once a month.

Thanks for helping me make sense of the 50 zillion products out there this year! The curlsmith hydro flexi jelly was my favorite thing this year
That dove gel is absolutely amazing!
I’m able to get several days I’m a row by mixing it with water in my hands and glazing my hair.
Me too!
I cant find it in canada gor some reason!

I need to try the Bounce curl clump cream and the Curlsmith air dry cream. I love cream stylers the most for my hair.
They both leave a little film on the hair which is nice if you're using a cream as a styler!

Yes I would incorporate clarifying. I don’t usually worry about waxes too much. They could buildup if you have low porosity hair or very fine hair.
What Noughty Shampoo did you like best? (You mentioned liking their shampoo.)
Hey Gena! For a drugstore leave in do you still like the Treluxe leave in? Also what would be your recommendation for a drugstore protein deep conditioner! Thanks so much ❤️

Because the Ouidad gel has humidity-blocking ingredients. It's humid most months out of the year, so it's what I reach for a lot. However the Souffle works really well in mild or cold weather. It does not have humidity-blocking ingredients so I don't use it as much in the summer.
