There are no Bank Holidays in Australia. Public Holidays are the norm.
A lot of newcomers forget that Australia is a federation of state, and there are legal differences between the states.

They were called Bank holidays a long, long time ago. It was probably changed to Public holiday around the time that Aussies stopped trusting Banks.
They’re actually Brush Turkeys but so many people got it wrong and said Bush Turkey that now both names are accepted as correct lol.
They're also sometimes referred to as scrub turkeys, apparently, but bush turkey seems to be the most common now.
I call them "brush chickens" - bin chickens and brush chickens. We also have swamphens around here and I call them "swamp chickens". I should really get a hobby.

no. the australian bustard is what i am referring to. in northern australia we call them bush turkey. i am not talking about brush turkeys
"Brush" is a misnomer dating back to the 19th Century, when the Victorians misnamed a lot of things. For example a large largely treeless plain was called a "desert", and that includes the Great Plains of the USA and Canada which are most definitely not deserts.
Bush turkeys can't live in brush because it impedes their large nest making habits, a very large ground nest made of scratching literately tons of leaves into a pile, and in partial shade or large trees in open woodland.. And at night they roost high up in large trees, which are definitely not "brush". The problem probably arises fro the different definition of "brush" in the U.K. to "brush" in Australia. The Cambridge Dictionary definition of "brush" is "small, low bushes or the rough land they grow on". Our turkeys won't nest in that sort of vegetation.
In Victoria, bottle shops are usually in a separate section of the supermarket or right next door. And you won't see many people barefoot. It's too cold most of the year 😅
What I thought was hilarious was that you mentioned that we shortened words like arvo etc., then used “rego” for registration 😂😂😂😂😂😂👊👊

G'day Guys! Here in NSW you do not need a mechanical inspection for registration for the first 5 years from new. but a mechanics inspection is needed after that every year... Cheers!
In Victoria, you only need a Vicroads inspection if you buy a second-hand vehicle or re-register a vehicle that has been out of rego for 3 months. Rego also includes CTP insurance and funds the Transport Accident Commission. Currently, new drivers licenses are issued every 3 years, but an updated photo is only required every 10 years.
Very similar to the UK except it’s 3 years on a new car 🚗

It’s only in Queensland where you don’t need to get your vehicle checked before registration. Not sure about other states, but NSW requires an inspection and ‘Pink Slip’ as part of the registration process… on the flip side however police in Queensland can pull you over and fine you anytime if your car appears a bit dodgy or not roadworthy. Roadworthy not needed in Tassie, but it is required in Victoria
SA doesn't have yearly car inspections either. And I haven't seen house gas bottles in metro ares in SA either...maybe isolated towns nowhere near the gas pipeline from Mooba in the Cooper Basin.
In NSW you only need an inspection if your car is over 3 or 5 years old (can’t remember which)!
It has been a couple of years, but my experience is that all vehicles must be road ready before rego in Qld. Certificate must be issued by a registered mechanic.
Nah, you need a current roadworthy certificate to register or transfer ownership of a vehicle in QLD.
Thank you I enjoyed your vid. re Medical Care. A few months ago I noticed a painless, swollen eyelid with a tiny puncture mark on it on a Friday night. I wasn't too fussed to go and see about it but my daughter works for Specsavers and told me I should see an optometrist the next day, which was a Saturday of course. I saw Optometrist at 9am, then 30 minutes later my GP ordered oral antibiotics, and I took the first tablet, all before 10.20am. My GP wanted me to ring him at HOME the following day if the swelling hadn't started to subside so he could arrange for admission to hospital for IV antibiotics. I didn't need to be admitted but it was a warning of how quickly an annoyance can become serious and how rapidly our system can and does work well.
Yeah that’s very efficient, very lucky over here! Glad it was nothing serious and was resolved so quickly 😊

In Victoria, we refer to seagulls that migrate inland to feed on rubbish dumps as tip chooks. This is similar to bin chickens. From Mick.D.

An English ex never came to terms with limited channels on free to air TV. Seemed to be his biggest challenge whilst living here!

In NSW, you can buy alcohol in some supermarkets - certainly Aldi. You can't at the Woolies we go to, but the associated liquor chain has a shop immediately next door.
As an immigrant to Australia, many years ago, the thing that I struggled to get my head around was all the timbers houses with low pitched corrugated metal roofs - I thought ''Jesus they're living in sheds''. Later I learnt that timber houses have a low thermal mass which good in a hot climate (not so good in the UK) and the low pitched metal roofs are used because they have lesser roof wind uplift loads, during a storm, than typical UK roofs (who are have bigger roof pitches to shed snow). It's all about the climate and people adapting to it.
Thanks for the video. Some of the things you’ve noticed only happen in certain areas. Like, bare feet is more of a Queensland thing - doesn’t really happen here in Victoria except maybe near the beach in summer. And the MOT thing - in NSW they do have to get an annual roadworthy on their car to get it registered. And for bottled gas it depends on where you are - pretty sure you get mains (piped) Gas in the main cities and some regional areas.
Also, we shorten heaps of words to end in ie (or y) as well - truckie, chippie (carpenter), smokie or firey (fireman), Bickie (biscuit), chewie (chewing gum), footy (football), etc. 😊
When I was a kid we went the entire school holidays barefoot.We lived in rural New South, by the Murray, on the border with Victoria
We live in suburban Sydney, and have a gas main supply. That doesn't mean that it's available in all locations in all States of course.
In Victoria our King's Birthday is in June, so wintertime. A bit cold down here. That day, the AFL has the ice bucket challenge where local celebs and participants slide down into a big icy cold bath tub. It is to raise money and awareness for MND which sadly, a well known football identity contracted 5-10 years ago.
Check Aldi for grog in the supermarket.

I emigrated from the UK 20 odd years ago and am still learning stuff "bring a plate" was one that got me.

Sadly, we don't have Aldi alcohol sales in Queensland.
Bush turkeys are in Queensland.. I am in Perth and I don't notice people going far from home with their feet bare. Maybe just down to the shop to pick up milk and bread or something.
Piped gas is certainly available in some areas in Queensland - I have had it in all the houses I have lived in since I moved to Brisbane in the 1980s. They recently replaced all the gas lines in our current neighbourhood as they had apparently been here for quite a long time but I live in an older established area just 5 km from the CBD. I know it is not commonly available in outlying and newer suburbs.

I think the most crazy thing is Victoria getting a public holiday for the AFL Grand Final. And it's not even the day of the Grand Final!
And the Kings birthday holiday is nowhere near the King’s actual birthday.
Good morning guys 🌞 A couple of interesting facts for you, male scrub turkeys use their beak like a thermometer to check that their mound ( about the size of a small car ) is around the correct temperature for incubation that occurs through fermentation they moderate the temperature by removing or adding debris and you wouldn't think it but they sleep high up in the tree canopy, fascinating creatures. Different states have different rules, especially Queensland, who don’t even have daylight savings. Cars have to pass rego inspections here in NSW once a certain age. Some states have free ambulance and others don’t. Different houses have different gas supply as well. I’ve lived in two houses with gas bottle hot water, but a lot more with mains gas, and others with no gas at all.
A lot start work early finish work early. The roads get busy from 4am. Don't need daylight savings. I get home after 2pm have more than enough daytime. Plenty where I live start getting home around that time.
The grog being more expensive is mainly due to government taxes. It varies a lot depending on the type of alcohol and its concentration.
For example, the duty on spirits with an alcohol by volume (ABV) over 10% is A$103.89 per litre and that’s just the tax. Then GST is applied to the final price AND, like fuel and cigarette excise (tax) it’s also indexed to inflation and is adjusted twice a year. Ouch!

There's a Dash Cam Owners Australia video where all the motorists pull up at a pedestrian crossing so a Brush Turkey can walk across. Another had a duck with her ducklings walking across a pedestrian crossing and it's not just an Australian thing for a horse in Russia used a pedestrian crossing to cross a road on it's own.

Another fun vid, thanks guys! In WA the law is that your vehicle must be roadworthy and in good condition to drive. We don't have annual inspections though police may pull you over if they deem it unsafe to drive. Never heard of the gas bottle situation! Is that a regional thing? Perth has plenty of Ibis' but no Brush Turkeys.
We have gas bottles in most of Margaret River with only a very few of the newer subdivisions having access to piped gas. I lived in many places around Australia and found it to be about 50/50 for gas bottles.

Bare feet are a Northern thing it is not common in Victoria.
RWC (MOT) is state dependant some require them yearly others only on the sale of a vehicle as the registration will not be transferred to the new owner without one.
Bottled gas for domestic use is only in areas that do not have mains gas.
I wouldn't fancy walking barefoot though the freezing streets of London, lol.
Nor Melbourne on a 14o day or a 41o day. But you do see it sometimes, mostly derros though.

Bottled gas is a Queensland or rural thing. Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales definitely have piped gas.
All states have seperate alcohol shops. It’s to make those premises legally responsible for service. Basically to stop underaged drinking problems. Like quarantine, Australia is very strict about underage drinking sales.

I have bottled gas only 18km from Sydney's CBD, not every suburb has piped natural gas.

Every thing is different from state to state.. nsw for instant has a green slip and the rego .. same with gas bottles .. I have natural gas to the house ( you can google all this) Queensland shuts early ( restaurant etc) compared eith n.s.w
You guys need to check when your car(s) will require a Safety Certificate. Before a vehicle can be driven on Queensland roads, it must obtain a roadworthy certificate. This certificate is a statement that the car meets the requirements set by Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads, and is therefore safe enough to drive. Vehicles that are less than 5 years old require a new safety certificate every 12 months, while vehicles older than 5 years need renewal every 6 months. NSW cars under 5 years old calculated from the month and year of manufacture do not require a Pink Slip (Certificate of Roadworthiness) and after that it is yearly.

We don't have bank holidays in Australia. It's not a thing. They are public holidays. And it is actually Queen Victoria's birthday that we celebrate, in June. Many countries did when it was the Empire. We kept it because it's in the middle of the year, so why not have a break?!

Victoria is no different to any other state. Sectioned off part of the store is actually in effect a separate store.. because it has the liquor license.: supermarkets don’t have liquor licenses in Australia which is why you don’t see grog on a supermarket shelf.

I walk into the supermarket I grab some grog then pay for it at the same checkout I pay for my groceries and cancer sticks.
There are a few reasons, but a big part is no one under 18 can sell alcohol so alot of staff in supermarkets couldn't sell it.
In the ACT supermarkets can sell alcohol with your groceries. Coles and Woolworths choose to have separate areas

People who go barefoot have fewer foot and ankle problems. In the last 2 weeks, I have had 3 private doctor's visits, a chest Xray, a bone density test, a hormone injection, pneumonia and shingles injections and a CT scan. Today, I will book to see a specialist, probably tomorrow. All at private clinics, same-or -next-day bookings and a total cost of $6.90 for the hormone. I am 79 years old and this is not emergency stuff.
I think in NSW they have more checks in cars then in QLD
Aussies shortening words seems to always be mentioned in these types of videos and I don't know why. It depends entirely on where you live and also to some degree on a person's socio-economic background and their level of education. I'm NOT saying that it's a bad thing!!! I don't know anyone who has brekkie before going to the servo on the way to work and maybe has some Maccas for lunch. This sort of thing is always mentioned in the "Weird Differences" videos as if it's required to do so because everyone else does. I went to a bottle shop today, not a Bottle-o, but I did wave at the local postie, not the Post Man, had a couple of sandwiches for lunch, not sangas, but I did buy some dunny paper at the supermarket. Having said all that, I did enjoy tour video. :)
Really enjoy your channel heaps though your observations could be in parts restricted to where you are living. I live 4 hrs drive from Brisbane in NSW and : 1/ Bush Turkeys are a pain in the but , wrecking gardens and so on... 2/ in most places in Australia bare feet is a no no, whether it be from poor street maintenance, glass, snakes in the country areas and just not a good look in certain places (bogans comes to mind) 6/ In regional Australia a doctors appointment is usually at least a week, maybe more 7/ There are so many Alcohol sales outlets in Australia I think that is why it is banned in supermarkets Australia wide, not just in Queensland. 8/ Motor vehicle registration etc I think is different in every state. . Registration costs are cheaper in Queensland . It can be very confusing as the states have different regulations and laws in many things that are regulated. (Buying property for one if you were to reside here). Glad to see you are enjoying your time here .

The whole stand alone and highly regulated alcohol retail situation in Australia is all a throwback to the early days of the settlement when wages were paid almost exclusively in Rum. In a system like that, the integity of the economy is directly proportional to the integrity of the Rum. So you cant distill your own alcohol (ie 'money'), you cant stretch your 'money' out by diluting or watering alcohol down since by law that was a serious criminal offense. And although the Government encouraged the retail sector to expand and provide the colony with a greater variety of imported and locally made goods, they certainly didnt want retail competition causing fluctuations in the value of the 'money', which is what would have happened if they had handed control of the economy to the free capitalists selling Rum/money all over the colony without a single request to even amend the record keeping requirements, ather than keep it under the iron fist of the then NSW Corps (aka the Rum Corps). Of course after Blighs second mutiny some things changed. Coins havey began being minted, explorers were pushing out onto the rich pasture that soon supported a grain and wool and meat industry far too big for Rum alone to support,. So the economy was tied to pound, but the Rum laws were maintained for stability. And it was my only during the 70 etc they stopped or at least

The Ibis wasn't a problem in urban areas when I was a young fella, not where I grew up anyway. I believe we have destroyed so much of their habitat, they had no choice.

No MOT - well not really you have to get a garage to do a safety inspection report (at least in NSW) for cars over 5 years old. Can't register or drive without one. From AAMI website. What is a pink slip?

You still need to get a licensed car mechanic to do a check to see if the vehicle meets all standards. If not the vehicle will require appropriate repairs.

New cars don’t require a rego check. Once the car reaches 5 years or older check is required to make sure car is roadworthy and is checked every year.
Won't see the barefoot thing that much in New South Whales...Unless its close to the Queensland border...us New South Welshman have a bit more class : )

Getting a doctors appointment the next day is "weird"??? If that's what you think then where England must be ultra weird. In Victoria you would have gas bottles if you live in a rural area, not close to a town BUT Vic is moving away from gas, electric only but the electricity grid is limited so, with multiple power outages probable, your electric car will be an electric brick.
Yep sometimes you can be waiting weeks or months in some cases, it’s sad to see where it is heading.

The title needs to be changed to "9 Weird Thing We Noticed When We Moved TO QUEENSLAND". 1 would say 6 or 7 of these things are not common in very many places. People always generalise about things in Australia forgetting that it is such a big and varied place.
Not forgetting..it is not their experience. If you come from a small country with a central government and have not had exposure to the various State differences, it is to be expected that they would not know.
Ibis birds are scavengers because their natural habitats have been destroyed. I hate they are called bin chickens when they are just trying to survive.
I doubt they get offended by the use of the term bin chicken, so I wouldn't worry.
Surprised you didn't mention our spiders! I don't like spiders & politicians. Creepy and nasty to interact with. And the spiders are nearly as bad!
Walking barefoot is not common across the country. I've lived in Victoria and Tasmania and we don't do it in either state. For future videos, might be best to flag that this is specific to where you live.
The infamous 'Bin Chicken' is being slated as the mascot for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Which ironic really, as no matter which political party of the day is in charge, Brisbane will be an embarrassment to the world and should just be shoveled into the bin.
With rego, I'm pretty sure for us in QLD you need to get an annual inspection or pink slip or whatever colour it is if the vehicle is older than 7 years old.
Also, there's a heap of places that uses bottled gas as it's infrastructure and resource that the government doesn't want to invest in by connecting a permanent gas line to the property if it's just for example a hot water service, with these types of dwellings, generally you'll have some form of electric stove top/oven as builders know that's there's no gas line to the property. If you have a gas stove top then lucky the bottles are large. There should be gas bottle refill info in your lease agreement etc, which I'm guessing by now, you're all over.
Hi mate, no age restriction on cars, had mine for 14yrs never needed a inspection, my mechanic tells me when I get a service if anything is needed but not a rippoff cheers
It must be nice to have always had cars so new you don't know that we don't have an annual inspection for older cars 🙄. Either that, or you've never owned a car at all I guess.

So I can't remember the requirement is in each State and I've only recently moved back to Brisbane, which I needed all that done as I had ACT plates on the car. I've only ever owned one car from brand new, until it was flogged and written off, all my other cars have been second hand. So cheers.
