Exactly, higher taxes forces more people to move out which increases taxes further in a viscous downward spiral. These governments need to learn to control their spending and not constantly ask for more when there isn't any.

I blame the politicians. They don't believe in a budget but think they can just keep spending and raising taxes to pay for it. As long as we the people don't hold them accountable and force a law that states have to balance their budgets, including the federal government, this will get worse and worse. Today it's your neighbor, tomorrow it will be you!!

I am a Republican- the Republicans in Flarida do similar stuff, but at the local local level… if someone carpet bags from the democrat states to Florida and purchase a new build. Infrastructure costs are tied into the taxes for those people and not the county taxes. So if it cost 20k to tie your house i to the sewer systems… be prepared to pay that and not expect your neighbor to pay it

The biggest culprit, as always, are the Public Schools, which make up about 65-70% of the total property tax bill. Public Schools should not just get what they want from property tax payers anymore--without public approval. Meaning, property owners need a CAP on property tax increases at 3% AND voter-approval for any increase beyond 3%. Maria Pappas's department (Cook County Treasury) is actually the Cook County Collections Agency, and will make your life a living hell if you do not pay your taxes on time. The chain of events that will occur are listed in the following order: Interest Fees, Penalty Fees, Tax Sale, Tax Lien, Tax Foreclosure, and finally loss of home, and out on the street.

You can thank the Democrats for reckless spending and forcing industry to leave to other states. I know of one house in Glenwood Illinois where the tax has increased by 75%. From 5,200 to 8,900 this year.

That’s totally insane! Glad I left Cook County 11 years ago. My property taxes went from $8,000.00 to $2,000.00 a year plus I don’t have to deal with any harsh winters where I am now.

Illinois homeowners are taxed to fund 8,529 units of local government, by far the most in the nation!!! Homeowners in 46 states are taxed to fund less than 2,500 units of government.
I have been paying city school taxes for years !!!....i don't have any kids... I think when you retire let the younger childbearing generations pay for their own children !!!! We now need to have been prepared for our own retirement and health care and costs ...

The tax office in my community has at least 30 workers or more ..just sitting collecting money all day....why don't they have....kiosks ... can you imagine how much is being paid out to city workers for payroll !!!! The school budgets are way out of hand, especially for the piss-poor education our children receive. To fund this runaway budget, you need ever-increasing tax dollars. As the local attorneys offices refuse to prosecute criminals, the crime rates like theft and shoplifting explode. Businesses do not want to suffer the losses in addition to the high taxes they are charged, plus suffer the threat to their employees' safety, so they close up shop and move away. This leads to more unemployed local residents, and a dearth of taxes, which must be absorbed by those same residents. On a national average in Republican governed states, you typically may see property taxes at about a 1-2% rate of the home's value. In Illinois, it can be anywhere from 5-20% or now higher. The dominos have been tripped, my friends. The state's collapse has begun.

This has been a sensationalized story for years, and this most recent video offers another example of the direction of the local media. There is indeed a problem in the South Suburbs, and the entire state of Illinois for that matter, but when only partial truths are revealed in a 4-minute segment, it creates more confusion for regular citizens. The tax rate comes AFTER the levy, and will adjust accordingly as the assessed value increases (which is highly desirable) or decreass. The inaccurate suggestion that a homeowner's tax bill will double year-over-year under normal circumstances is absurd...I have also proven this statistically by reviewing more than 20 years worth of Cook County property tax data.
Tell the democrats to stop raising property taxes that’s not reflective of the housing market
Then explain a $12k per year in taxes on a home you can barely sell for $200k in the south burbs. Meanwhile a sprawling home in Oak Brook is paying less in taxes for their home. Crook County mismanagement.

whether a person lives in the house or not the home is still taxed. Try looking at the governing bodies and their spending particularly on Pensions. People collect pensions and live outside the district. Elections have consequences.

(Aside from corruption and overspending by public school system) Biggest culprit is TIF. Tax Increment Financing. TIF reform (ideally, abolishment) as well as enforcing laws on the books to harness rampant corruption would start to turn the tide.

Taxes, property or otherwise are supposed to take care of its working-class citizens, & yet are car-dependent infrastructure & all of our other services is failing (rip Sonya Massey). Our schools don't inspire nor teach skills (not that white-collar crime cares what your kid knows or doesn't know. These greedy companies don't want to hire or pay livable wages regardless, underhire & overwork. Poverty wages overseas in sweat shops etc). Yet higher-income home-owners usually pay little to no property-taxes. The burden falls on lower-income people who barely manage to get a home (poor & working-class families paying a mortgage thus not owning the home out-right) & black families. Rich & lobbyists pay little to no taxes, & major union busting, thanks Ronald Reagan!
