Cover sort of was a thing in AOW3 but it was a lot more simple. There wasn't half or full cover. There were only obstacles to break up line of sight and protect your units that way. Some units ignored line of sight and/or long range penalties. Flanking mechanics were a bit different too.
Yep, the series' sole competitor for over 10 years was basically just HOMM. Planetfall is basically Total War Warhammer in space with turn-based everything, The light 4x elements definitely take a backseat to combat and exploration, but the game feels infinitely replayable.
Bought the game. Love it. I played several AoW games and this is one of the most enjoyable: not so much a predetermined path for your heroes to follow. More open world. Production value is good too: plenty of content and good graphics. Thanks Quill18 for the review (I bought it before watching this but it's useful to see you play)
Just got the game from humble bundle, fount it quite confusing even though I'm used to civilization. This video helped me understand lots of the mechanics. Great job ;) Keep up the good work.
Everytime I look up tutorials for super awesome games ....you are always the guy lol feels like your my cousin at this point .....keep up the good work my brotha I appreciate it
Quill please play more of this! I just bought it on the back of this stream but it is quite overwhelming for someone who has never played this type of game before.
Question: Does the AI in this game as blatantly map cheat as it did in AoW3? I stopped playing AoW3 because I watched as an enemy army kept turning back and forth from one of my cities halfway across the map as I stepped a unit in and out of it.
My dear Quill, there's no point in writing this under this video or another, maybe just that I love age of winders since the early 2000s and i was so hyped for this one. Anyway two of your videos are stuck in my memory: the one in which you talk about leaving your job to be a full time streamer and the one in which you're totally drunk saying TB the last goodbye. TB meant a lot to me and somehow his "wtf is age of wonders iii" is my favourite video of him. I donìt know, I just love his voice and he was so damn smart. Anyway, I'm slightly drunk, therefor I feel plenty of love in my heart, so I'd like to thank you because you're the loving ear that listens to strategy gamers in your friendly canadian elegant way, and to cheer to the memory of the man that would have produced the best content (I'm sorry dear friend but you come second) about this title that I already love so much, John THE MAN Bain. Best wishes to you and your family from Tuscany. P.S. I love whisky more than chocolate, I would have sent you some but times are hard, but if you ever come to Florence the first drink is on me.
Some people argue that simultaneus turns is unfair for the player because they see AI players "click faster" and thus move before the player can intercept an army. But if you think about it, really it makes ZERO difference. If you play classical turns, the AI's can do all their stuff "before" the player can, in the next following turn. If you play simultaneus turns, again the AI can do their stuff maybe before the player has a chance, the EXACT same outcome in terms of turn progression! In fact, i personally like to think of it this way, when i'm doing my turn 1, i'm in reality doing turn 2 "preemtively" before the AI's get to act. Because it really is the exact same thing, if you move in Turn 1 before the AI's (classic turns), or if you move in Turn 2 before the AI's (simultaneous turns). It really just depends on how you think about it, but it really ends up being the exact same "benefit", everyone still just gets 1 move per round, so it makes absolutely NO SENSE to me that 90% of all youtubers still use Classical Turns. You're literally ONLY waiting for the AI's turns, for NO benefit.. It's madness..
Appreciate you posting this. Looks like a fun game. I got Age of Wonders III and will hopefully pick this up eventually just because it has a familiar look but a different style which you explained and showed off nicely.
Hate that I always seem to be working when you stream these games I am totally into. Wish you had an affiliate link so you could get credit for my purchase of the game, but totally happy to see the VODs being uploaded here too. This makes the third game I've bought because you played it for me and showed how much fun it could be, the other two being City Skylines and Stellaris.
The combat seems to be the fun part, why auto solve them, especially at the start, when you can easily lose units and it makes a big difference? I would always go into the combat.
your picks here kinda reminds of Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. a one season wonder on Saturday mornings in '93/94. for the time, it was really, really political for kid's fare.
Are the units all the same across factions with different skins? Meaning the stats and all that are the same like Age of Wonder 3? One reason I never got into the Age of Wonder. No diversity in the units between factions.
I ended up skipping the initial tutorial text with xenoplague in the game, and now I dunno how to find it again to read up on it D: How can I find that info back? >.
What's your honest opinion of this game. Got it last weekend. I think it's great. I'm not very good at it though. If you enjoy it could you do like a tutorial like you did with stellaris. Thanks
Just so you know, if you sell a reward you are only selling the part of the reward with $ next to the symbols. Sometimes it's the whole reward, sometimes it's only 1 or 2 parts of the reward.
And once again we see why you NEVER auto resolve in strategy games. RNG throws skill out the window and even with great odds, sometimes you do roll that 1 on the dice. Letting modded vet units fend against a dice roll is always wrong if you're halfway decent at playing the game.
Yeah, the random mod that works with your loadout isn't really true, got exosuit, that only infantry can use, while starting as a support vehicle. Totally useless, but kleptomaniac is the only vice worth taking, as the rest are not based on a fix number but 10% of some ressource for the rest of the game, so as soon as you hit 100 of that thing it's way more expensive, and you hit that fast.
Have you played this yet? Whats your opinion over this game? I know xcom and divinity are really good but is this game like the other turn base? im wondering if i will get as into it as i did the other two.
Not a single mention of Endless Legend? If I were feeling mean I'd call it a reskin. EL is a great game though, so it's nice to see more of that kind of strategy.
The game looks interesting. However, the problem I have with it is the sense of scale. In a game with cities and claiming territories, it ruins my immersion when the "armies" that are marching around only look like thirty guys. And it's much harder to pull the Civ explanation of "abstraction" here because the units are individually taking cover, actions larger formations of soldiers couldn't do. Kind of a niche hybrid of two games, Civ and X-Com, but, for me personally, I don't think I could play it without getting annoyed lol
Don't get your point here. The battles are squad based, not army based. WW2 was mostly a series of small squads fighting each other, not giant blobs of men colliding Total War style. Your immersion sounds incredibly fragile.
@@CerpinTxt87 yes, but an army in World War 2 had a lot more than six squads in it. Yea, I guess you could call my immersion fragile lol but, for me, the scale just doesn't match. Entire cities can't be defended by thirty guys.

sad this generation of gamers isn't going to know the greatness of that game. i like this game tries to re-introduce those sort of memorable quotes but i feel they stop short of actually being memorable, guess we will see in 10 years.
Xenoplague Amazons on the Xenoplague world was my first game. Wasn't that great, few animals other than Xenoplague, fewer chances to infect easy enemies, and so on.
These videos that com from livestreams are so annoying and you seem to have more and more of them recently. Are you moving to livestreaming instead of normal videos? All the Livestream adornments are just super annoying to me.
Agreed. I hate the constant "Hey, someone gave me money, thank you". I know that it is something you need to do as a streamer to keep people giving you money, but at some point half the stream consists of this dribble, and it is simply not what i want to watch.
Agreed. I can't really fault him since UA-cam is putting the shaft to videomakers pretty hard. The answer seems to be to find a platform that isn't insane and random and actually pays, and then repost on UA-cam as an afterthought. I do think however it wouldn't be such a chore to at least film a bumper every 30m for splitting. I have also seen other people who post streams capture all the stream chat (and donations/subs) and overlay it on the video, so you can see what they are responding to, rather than constantly getting half a conversation. Although I understand, at the end of the day this scans as sloppy and inattentive, which harms the content. It feels like, 'yeah, whatever, this is good enough for you.'
@@jimdabarbarian That was my point though. Lately it feels like the livestream content is REPLACING the normal content, and I was wondering if that is indeed his plan.
You are too aggressive. There is no turn limit or goal you need to get to. Be a bit more defensive and you're likely to lose less units. It makes little difference in time.
Looks like amateur reskin mod of AOW3. In combat looks good, but units/portraits look like school project, it was way better in AOW3. They should have polished the real thing a bit more instead IMO... And take some time with the AI finally. It's pretty weak and slow and relies a lot on cheating after AOW2(sw). Old ones had actually decent AI for the time, but they expended the decision space and didn't do anything to improve on it. I love AOW3, will likely try this one too, but so far it looks pointless and dumbed down and the UI style is silly and harder to read. Also it's rather odd seeing quill, who's played AOW3 be surprised of abilities that are just renamed AOW3 ones.
I was really about to watch this video but gettin the notifications on new subscribers every fewnseconds is so annoying that i just stopped the video. Why are you having those in the video at all? What purpose does it serve to the viewers? So bad....
