I mean as much every AD I've ever been in has a permanent 20% off sale. Even Marc at Long Island Watch does this with his house brand. It's hilarious because the MSRP...is set by him. Like nowhere else are you going to find those watches.
Hamilton make lovely watches with awful residuals. Paying RRP is a great way to lose a lot of money, always best to wait for a sale or buy second hand. Also, a lot of high street jewellers offer either student or key worker discounts in the 15-20% range (though they're often brand restricted).
Ben the very first watch I ever own was a Timex, my Grandmother gave it to me for Christmas in 1965. Yes, 55-years ago that's when my love For Timex timepieces was planted in my soul. Now with a 55-year watch collection consisting over 200 watches of Seiko, Credor, Citizen, Knot, Szanto and others but of course the number one of all the God Tier "Casio' with every Rangeman, Mudman and G-Shock, inside my heart I still loves those old Timex watches.
You must be same age (or near mine), first watch was a kids Timex, everyone had one at school. Got a collection of 50 watches (and growing), have five Timex. I like the Waterbury's have two of them both autos.
I'm of an age when Timex WAS the watch to purchase. In fact, my first watch was a Timex, circa 1971 give or take. Their range today are good enough for everyday use, but I certainly wouldn't pay top dollar for any of their collection when comparing prices to other brands. Great video by the way.
Kohl's in the US operates the exact same way. They display the prices on an LCD screen so they don't have to pay the labor dollars in switching them out (or failing an audit I would do to make sure the signs were correct).
Speaking of marketing tactics, I hear that Rolex is deliberately creating shortage in production to drive up demand in the 2nd hand market. What are your thoughts on this?
I believe in behavioural economics this is called framing, the action of having way higher rrp and a supposed 'discount' in order to give customers illusion of saving money.
I think all watch brands do this. A couple of years ago, I bought a Seiko SNK795 that had something like $295 on the box but could be had on Amazon for < $100.
I love watches so it looks like I'm in the right place. Love your reviews and by extension the videos. Really looking forward to going through your video archive.
You definitely need a better sofa Ben. Darlings of Chelsea do some wonderful ones, but they cost a small fortune .... DFS do some nice homages of luxury sofas at pocket-friendly prices - (Although personally, I'd hold off until the summer sale has passed and get in during the autumn one for an extra 12% saving on the current sale price & a complimentary footstool! *) * Doesn't include VAT and delivery
Timex in Canada does the same thing. I like some Timex watches. I have three now. Their website prices are way above the retail chains even "on sale". Who even needs the watch, when you can tell the time by the by the appearances of the Timex sale emails ? : )
These kind of strategy just continue to erode their brand equity and in the long term only hurt them most. A quick buck now but it’s a hard hole to climb out of. Affordable doesn’t mean cheap, they are just seen as cheap and that’s not necessarily a good thing
Totally agree with you here, Ben! Including the fashion brands, I think the monthly routine is to slash the price of the overpriced to make it feel like a bargain. P.S. Love the spaghetti scammeti cameo! 😂
In New York City, there used to be stores which continually had a "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE!" because this brought in customers, and I think it may have lifted restrictions on advertising and discounts (but I'm not sure of that, it has been decades). The city found it already had a law against doing this continually, so it cracked down. Several tried changing their name to "the GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE store", but a judge put an end to that. So, they figured out that the law says they have to actually go out of business if they have a going out of business sale, so they form a business, start the going out of business sale immediately, then when they have to they form a new business, sell all the stock to the new business, close the old one, and then the new business has a going out of business sale. There are still one or two, I think.
I recently bought a Timex Marlin, sharp looking dress watch and great for small wrists. However what I was unaware of was that they used acrylic, or some other soft garbage for the glass. All it took was one small nick and the watch was ruined. Abysmal quality for a watch costing $200... Needless to say I returned it instantly and got a full refund.
Even the sale price is too high for most Timex watches considering what you get and that it will be less on Amazon. In almost every case Casio has a similar watch for less money, or a better watch for the same money. So unless you're dead set on having a Timex on your wrist or you're a collector, IMO they're a company to be avoided. Kind of a shame, really.
Everything enjoyable is a rip-off to a degree. Even an f-91w doesn't have the $15 or so in terms of parts and distribution they charge for it. You just have to decide what percentage of rip-off-ness in a product is acceptable to you. For instance, I paid $40 for a Soviet ZIM. It's realistically not even worth that much, but I don't care. It's my single favorite watch in my collection for what it represents, engraved caseback and all.
Perhaps. I have watches from both Invicta and Timex. People can whine about Invicta all day, but their watches (in my experience) are tons nicer materials and QC than Timex. And that's unfortunate, cause Timex should be at least better than Timex is.
@@tancreddehauteville764 oh, I agree. I have a Citizen Eco-Drive pilot's watch that I set all my other watches to and I have an Invicta 31290 and 8926ob that only lose a second or two every few days compared to that Quartz Eco-Drive. @@tancreddehauteville764 I'm going to have to press X to doubt on that one. The NH35 is a solid movement, but there's no way you're going to get better than 20 sec/day accuracy out of the box with one of those. Once you regulate them, though, it's a very different story.
@@jakekaywell5972 there's absolutely a way you get better than plus or minus 20 seconds straight outta the box. Both of my Invicta 1953 dive watches are way better than that. The 31290 is almost dead perfect and the Batman only loses maybe 5 seconds a day
@@indyjoe36ify Interesting stuff. I only have my own experience to go off of (three NH35s in different guises), so thanks for the new information if nothing else. @@eucitizen78 I wouldn't agree on all their models. Some such as the Expedition North models and the Expedition x James Brand offer a lot for the cost. In fact, I'd argue that if they did a non exclusive watch with the same specs as the James Brand (or even slightly lower) for the same price they'd own that market. If they took the designs of models such as the Midtown and used a better movement and crystal, they'd kill it IMO.
Say what you will, but they're now discounting their manual/auto watches, which I applaud because their MSRPs for Miyota-powered watches is not competitive.

DFS is actually 'Direct Furnishing Supplies', though should be the above for sure haha
