Hello! Homemade apple sauce is one of the easiest recipes to make. After peeling them, core and chop them. place in water and boil until very soft. Season w brown sugar and cinnamon to taste. They are called turnips in the UK especially Scotland, and South Africa.

Based on the size and the color of the interior I'd say they were rutabagas. The outside color makes them look like HUGE Turnips.
