When I was in college and my choir went on tour to perform in church services, we didn't expect applause. Most churches do not applaud performers because the performance is supposed to be for the glory of God, not the performer. Being the fact that they are kids and guest performers, they received a very warm reception at the end.
I'm a choir director and a teacher and I found nothing inappropriate in the reception from the crowd. Also, you can't tell fully the reception because the video fades out before the applause ends.
Oh my gosh! That was the best choir I've ever heard singing this song! They were strong, they showed really good dynamics, and their voices were powerful. They looked happy to be singing this. Also the acoustics in the room were amazing and that echo at the end was really nice. I wish I was apart of this choir. They sounded like a professional choir. And the sopranos did a great job on the high notes. Outstanding job!
You sure you did this arrangement in middle school? Sure it wasn't Roger Emerson's or Jester Hairston's? This would not be a developmentally appropriate piece for a middle school...
Loved it! The advanced chorus did this at my school one year before I entered it, so I didn't get to do it but it sounded great then and great with this choir
As am I. This is a collegent level piece. I'm sorry, but if they struggled like this then maybe they needed to pick an easier piece. Maybe you should stop handing everyone a great job and they can learn to take some constructive criticism.
Ever heard of constructive criticism? I guess not. Yes they were good but there was definitely things they can improve. They are high school students, some of which are probably going off to college. This is 4 years old so all of them are hopefully in college or working in the real world. People need to stop handing out congrats without any pointers on how to improve when they definitely can. Participation trophies cause kids to be separated from the adults when they hit their college years. Trust me I know. I just graduated highschool last year.
Especially with those tenors sounding like they have to falsetto most of their upper range notes. The mens section could've used a boost. Probably should have gone with a U formation with tenors on the inner left, sopranos outer right altos outer left and bass inner right
+Elena Urru GS this is not Gospel this is Negro Spiritual which is rooted in classical music of the slave masters and the church at the time. To effectively sing Negro Spiritual one must be able to seemlessly move betweeen Classical technique and natural raw emotional singing. See Leontyne Price or Kathleen Battle or Jessye Norman for example
If someone messes up you don’t pull away from what the audience is looking at. One bass messed up and one kid nudged him and another looked all the way to his right. Simple cardinal rules to choir
Definitely inspired by the UST Singer's interpretation since it sounded nothing like the Moses Hogan Choir. But the musical director's take on it didn't do justice for the amazing voices these kids have. She opted for the safe dynamics and tempo which translated to a "much weaker" sound. Hence, an underwhelming performance. See for yourself ua-cam.com/video/SrVGyQFTvcU/v-deo.html
The men were great, you could here the transitions carefully and it was very well in tune now as for the women..... there could have been so much more to their dynamics. The mens diction was astounding the women... again they lacked in this department as well. They seemed very disengaged during the first half of the song but all in all it was meh.
Seeker OD lol what? choirs usually have to look at their music to know what they are singing.. i would know.. i’m in 3 different choirs at my school. Tough music like this song requires to have your music with you, also if you’re group hasn’t a lot of time to practice it you need to have your music to know what you’re singing. So don’t judge a choir if you’re not in one or don’t know their scenario! 😒
what a luke-warm reception from the crowd. this was a great performance. it should have been met with a thunderous ovation

I totally agree the choir deserved more applause.

For such a young choir wow! amazing!

I love this song !!!!!!!!
Yea tenors!
They need to have some more emotion, I have to feel the emotion through the computer screen, nice voices though!
This is a very pretty song!
They really rushed the piece... and the Sop 1 "shout" solo was.. yeah. But they sound pretty good.
oh jeez, yeah one of the 1st sopranos made me cringe nearly the whole time, she just kept getting ever so slightly flat.
+INFINITY Games These are clearly children. Stop being so critical

Ever heard the phrase, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"? I guess not

Yessssss SOPRANOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow good job very good job!!
Wwwwwwwoowwwwww...
Knowing that there is a large difference in the amount of women and men, the director should have told the girls to back off to get a vocal balance.
Especially with those tenors sounding like they have to falsetto most of their upper range notes. The mens section could've used a boost. Probably should have gone with a U formation with tenors on the inner left, sopranos outer right altos outer left and bass inner right
wow
I'm singing this in my vocal chamber
Who lets people use sheet music during a performance 😬
great arrangement! But, I'm wondering: this is gospel - why do they use classical vocal technic ? Sorry for my question - I'm writing from Italy.

Leontyne, Kathleen and Jessye are the greatests, are supreme! Damn, you took some unmatchable examples!LOL
khamikins Don't forget Moses Hogan
The words are from the original Gospel but the music has been modernized by modern composer.

Is this arrangement a staple at Enloe like the Hallelujah Chorus?
yes
lol seiji I'm scrolling through comments and found yours
3 years later...
To 2014 me: Sang Elijah Rock, can confirm.
was this a state competition piece?
It sounds very culty. Yet I still enjoyed it! Great voices! But still very culty!
That 2nd time that soprano hit that high note was atrocious 1st time SUCCESS
so we just not gonna talk about what the heck happened at 3:08
idk what that was LMAO
LMAO 0:41 the top left guy nudges the other bass to sing
Rohan Patel nah the guy went to early bruh
Same month and year of Titanic sinking 100th anniversery! WHAT!

the fuck was that sound at 3:10? lmao
Good, but a little fast for my taste

The fact that they look at the music makes them seem like a bit of a shitty choir tbh.

I totally agree with you; I'm a singer too and I like to read music. That being said, this piece of music is not particularly hard for any 4 parts.
Dies not sound anything like the Marines’ version. Sorry kids, you worked hard, have great sound, but I just prefer something I can understand.
Sucks
