Hi Andy! It was one of the harder hikes we ever did, certainly the longest 😅 We did take two days rest before getting on the bikes again and even then it was still painful to move. Thanks!
We managed to send an email out at the gondola because of the free wifi there. We told him we would manage but it was going to take a long time. He still came to our rescue! The best moment of the day 😉 The knees are doing good! Thanks
What an amazing adventure! So sorry to hear about the knee problem, I hope you are recovered (or recovering)! Thanks for sharing - the good and the difficult.
Hi Stephen! Thanks, we have recovered well since our hike, it only took 10 days 😉 For all the hardship, an amazing adventure that we look back on with great pleasure!
Good going guys. You are right cycling is not like walking or running - a whole different set of muscle groups. I hope this doesn't put you off getting back up the mountains. At least now you know you have to get some walking in. Beautiful up there. All the best. Mark
Thanks Mark! We love the mountains and it we be real hard to keep us away 😉 For sure we'll do longer hikes in the future, maybe even multi month tru-hikes...
Wow, that was rough. It is a very similar issue I had when I was involved full time with athletics (many years ago in the mists of my fading memory!!!). Because I was a long distance runner, my muscles were being asked every day to take my body forward at predictable speeds. Our bodies are like loyal family pets and they love to do what we ask. Our muscles shape themselves to the task. Then, every now and then, we ask our bodies to do something outside of the normal. This is when our muscles start to ask questions....'ehm...excuse me...what are we doing now?' 'We are hiking up a mountain'. 'But you are bending your legs much further than you normally do and the angles are not always as strictly straight as I am used to' 'Yes of course body, but we are hiking today, are you not enjoying yourself? Look at the wonderful scenery? Come on body suck it up?' Yes, I am not complaining, and thank you for taking me up into this wonderful clean air, I am just alerting you to the fact that my batteries are nearly spent and you need to go down again. And my dear owners, I have to tell you that negative contractions is not something we do on the bike normaly (a unique thing our muscles can do in descents that mean we contract the muscle as it lengthens!!! I still cannot get my head around that one). Oh my dears how you must have suffered on this day...and still you smiled (on camera!). The answer I discovered for myself at the time, is cross training. A small routine of about 20 minutes a day to do something like Pilates. Any routine that takes the muscles out of the strictly limited range of cycling (running in my case) and works the muscles through their full range of movement. FULL RANGE OF MOVEMENT!!! (sorry for shouting but it is how I felt when I realised that the fix was so simple). I hope you are both resting well at home during this interesting period and I look forward to seeing you again on the road. Take good care of each other. Michael from Ireland.
Hi Michael! Thanks for the entertaining and in depth theory & tips story reflecting on your own experience and our sufferings 😉 Cross training is very good and I (Eric) did that a few years back. Trying to get back into a groove now with some running, stretching and muscle stuff. Have to get used to it all again! Hope your well!! All the best from Schoorl! E&M
Woooh that was as extreem as the mud party you were in with the bikes. 15h hiking/walking/climbing is way too much. You guys are tough !!! I suppose a rescue team goes up that mountain quit a few times a year to get people down. You have to be realy trained for such a big hike. Well done any way. Holland is going to be really boring when you are back ;-)
You are an amazing couple, and what you're doing is an excellent lesson of life for a lot of people around the World. May I ask you if you're using the app Ride With GPS to prepare your routes? Kind regards.
Thanks so much 😊 We mostly have a rough idea what we would like to see and use Maps.me on our smartphones to plan routes. For longer stretches we also use bikemap.net online to make a base route (and import that in Maps.me) from which we can deviate to our hearts content 😉 All the best!!
Hi Andi 🤙🏼 Maudi was even over her hunger and fell a sleep almost as soon as we got home. I had a lovely late night dinner with our host. Tasty Japanese food with a nice cold one. Still remember your stories from Fuji, would have loved to have gone with you!!
Hakuba has some tough hikes, but I think you may have found one of the hardest! Thank goodness for the onsen, you might be able to walk! I take a soak before and after skiing and what a difference it makes. Walking downhill, backwards in the night - I feel for you, but glad you had no bear encounters. Beautiful video, thanks!
Hi, It's so nice to hear from you so regulary now. i really enjoy your eye for the beauty that surrounds you stuff like bark whos dancing in the wind, spiders, clouds...you love nature mmh? So happy to follow you!
Hi Mirjam, thanks for your lovely comment. We do love nature and that's why we find hiking so very special 😄 Great to hear our videos make you happy 🙏🏼
Magnificent mountains & scenery! Brutal hike: technical & elevation. Running and esp. hiking require different muscles than cycling. And you can't train hiking by walking in the flatlands. For me it's not the knee but hips. Nasty.
Hi Jack! That was totally out of the blue 😊 We prepared on a couple of hours extra walking before we could collapse. The Onsen was great and the beer afterwards too 👌🏼
i had similar situation in the swiss Alps. My legs nearly gave after 6 hours up then 8 hours down the next day. it was a hard hike... even hardcore climbers at our overnight hut agreed.
I missed that episode, a great hike incredible day. I'm pretty sure most hikers do this in 2 days. My experience has been hiking helps for cycling but cycling doesn't help for hiking, I don't know why that is. I also have troubles with my knees after 6-7 hours of hiking. Going downhill is always much harder on the legs. The hot bath at the end undoubtedly saved you a lot of pain the next few days.
Great vid guys. Three friends and I took on a tough hike in the Japanese Alps last summer and almost got stranded in the fog and the snow! Are you guys there now in Feb?!
Thanks Matt! Mountains always have a level of unpredictability. Looks like you got out ok 😉 We are in SE Asia now enjoying the coast. This time of year would be next level... would be interesting! All the best
Looks like an amazing hike. Enjoying the videos. Cycling is fantastic exercise, but it is very specific and biomechanically doesn't translate well to walking or running. I rode from Darwin to Melbourne in 28 days, doing 160Km a day on a loaded touring bicycle. After a week's rest, I did a run and I don't think my legs have ever functioned more poorly. Not as great for your body as you'd imagine, but an amazing way to travel and see the world and good for your mental health, and heart and lungs.
Thanks! It surely was amazing :.) Recommend if you are ever in that area! I agree, cycling gets you fit but targets mostly specific muscles. I would argue that hiking would be a better way to travel for your body as it is our natural way of moving around. It's a bit slow though to cover distance and the change in nature & culture feels about right on a bicycle to process everything and not get too bored with the monotony of urban areas. 160km / day for 28 days, talking about amazing!! You'd think you would be fit enough to do a triathlon after that ;.) All the best!

You need a pair of trekking pole, ah two pairs . Help a ton, save your knees. Did you use trekking pole when doing Annapurna circuit? On the other hand, 15 hours is really brutal.
We normally take trekking poles when doing a longer (multi day) hike! This was an in the moment adventure decision, no trekking poles available... On the Annepurna circuit I think we found some walking sticks in the forest. Especially necessary when having a heavy backpack!
there's nothing like uneven bare rock to beat you up...I used to run over mountains like that and at the end of a race ( 25 miles ( 40km and 4,000 metres of climbing) your legs just gave up after the finish line ! We call it fell running in the UK.
