Hi I’m in zone 7 Virginia. That’s true sweet William are deer resistant . I have a big big area for wild flowers only. I bought 5 pounds of wild flowers from Eden brothers 3 years ago and sweet William blooms so beautiful. They reseed them self ( foxglove, deme’s rocket , larkspur, blanket flower, daisies, coreopsis and of course sweet William . Blooms in the spot so beautiful.
Sounds great! I love hearing from gardeners who actually deal with deer!
I live in Sulphur Springs and last summers heat plus this year freezes some of my dianthus from Lowes survived.
This year with inflation they are $5 for a four inch pot, so I am attempting starting from seeds (pinks) with heat pad and grow light. Mine are in my front flower bed with slight slope and partial sun. Wish me luck!
You got this!
Tx for the info about the name “Pinks!” Wow!❤️
You are so welcome!
Your attention to detail is the best I have seen yet. Don't lose that talent.! I also have sweet william going but as a cool hardy annual--have JUST planted some outdoors to winter over. LOVE these flowers. And I find they reseed, but aren't actually a perennial here--I am 8b in the Pacific Northwest. Interesting about zones. I think we have to just figure out what our zone details are all about and go with it!
Aww thanks! Yes even if we have the same zone # doesn’t mean we have the same conditions.
Love dianthus! Love the colors and texture of the ones you planted. You are going to have a beautiful show of color.
Can't wait!
I love your apron! 😍
Thanks! I’m giving it a try … I like that my microphone is further away from my neck.
I love it tooo...where'd ya get it lol.. I want one ❤
I couldn't resist buying 3 of the Walmart roses after watching your roses video. So excited to grow more color! Thanks Amanda!
I got one, too! Where on earth should I put it?! 😂
You are so welcome! Have fun with them!
😊 Sweet Willams will be marvelous.
I hope so!
Really appreciate dianthis for San Antonio summers. They keep on blooming!😅
Glad you like them!
I envy your neat organized notes even more than the Dianthus!
🌷🌷🌷
Really awesome variety of dianthus colors you choose, I started my dianthus about a month ago and they all germinated well seeds from swallowtail, actually I had to thin them out because every single seed germinated. can’t wait to get them in the garden.
That is awesome! I love it when everything germinates!
Really appreciate this video. Last spring I purchased 5-6 varieties of dianthus. Some tall, some medium and some short. Most came from Shades of Green but others were clearance. Unfortunately, I think I lost most of the tags. But I was amazed that they stayed green all winter! More worried about summer because when I tried these a few years ago, they didn’t survive but could have been an operator error. 🤣 Maybe too much sun and not enough water in that location at my other house.
Mine definitely fade in the summer … I just make sure to keep them watered and the hit them with some fertilizer at the end of the summer.
My Mom grew sweet Williams although she had terrible allergies. Seeing them reminds me of her. Flowers always seem to trigger memories.
❤️❤️❤️
Love the walk through. Please keep showing"😊 how to" for other seeds
Will do!
Thanks for your thorough explanation of the different types. 👍
My pleasure!
Enjoy your videos so much! I’m trying a sweet William variety for the first time this year-got my seeds at the dollar tree so a cheap experiment.
That is awesome! They have great seeds!
I started Jolt Pink Magic from Swallowtail Seeds last Fall. All germinated and planted in my beds and looking great so far (the foliage at least). Even survived our freezing temps (Atlanta area). They of course have not bloomed yet so we will see..... Can't wait!!
Wonderful!
Heyyy! Shout out to North Texas! :)
Hey hey!
D. 'First Love' is an excellent choice. Seeded in January will bloom first year March through frost in zone 4/5. I have found rabbits love the buds on the low growers AND the 'Black Knight', although not the Sweet William variety.
Awesome! I’ll go look those up, thanks!
I absolutely adore dainthus. I don’t know what variety I have but they have the silvery pointed style leaves and they look like tiny little carnations with an absolutely DIVINE aroma!! I have the standard garden center varieties also, and I like them; but the silver leaf one with the fragrant blooms are my absolute favorites! Please do show us how to divide these asap. Pretty please!
Ooo, I want some that are silver!
I’m in NH and my Sweet William is a perennial. I should send you some seeds when they go to seed
I love that they are perennial!
My sweet Williams totally madew wait a year to see them but worth it. Love the dark cherry variety. I do think all of the black and white are the same but have seen it called different names. I've been growing some things as a kind of 'savings' for stock to sell in retirement and those would probably be a good one❤
Love that you are selling seeds in retirement! That is so cool!
Selling plants. Planting them now is like my savings account
I have pink and purple dianthus I love them and they smell so good and I have a variety of sweet william I forgot the name but it it white light pink and pink so beautiful... and they stay green for me all year.. I am in NTX as well 😊
Very nice!
Great apron!
Thanks!
Well deer ate the blooms off all three of my dianthus last year.
Well crap … I had some say it was deer resistant but obviously not every variety from what you are saying.
In your intro around the :32 mark you have a beautiful purple cup-like flower in the middle of your bouquet. What kind of flower is that and do you remember where you purchased it/or the seed? Thanks!!
It’s Canterbury bells! You can get the seeds almost anywhere … it’s also known as campanula … they are best sown in the fall as they are biennials.
Pretty varieties, dianthus is very hit or miss for me lol probably user error! Can't wait to see how you will layer your crops something I need to do as well. I can't remember are you doing any nasturtium? I haven't been able to find any varieties I like yet 😢 have a great weekend!
Yes I’m actually starting nasturtiums next week, I’ll post about them!
Hi. Question. Do you direct sow outside in your Beds or Pots? I don’t have the area at this time to start seeds. Thank you for sharing and replying to our comments.
Right now I only sow inside but once the last frost in my area passes, I will begin sowing directly outside. If you don’t have much room inside, look up winter sowing on UA-cam … you can starts lots of seeds outside right now with winter sowing techniques.
How much water does the Weigiela need Heidi? I have a couple in my backyard in full sun that are given regular water, but they seem to be struggling :-( Zone 8 NC
I have t grown Weigela before so I do not know!
Please remember to film when you plant them out. Show us where and then how they did! I ❤ dianthus.
Sounds good!
One of my dianthus I planted last year has been blooming for about a week now.
That’s awesome!
I find dianthus (low mounding pink carnations variety) is very drought tolerant once established. I do have to deadhead tho to keep them looking nice :)
Definitely! Dead heading helps a ton!
I'm in zone 7 (previously 6b) kansas and I have deer frequent my yard and property often and they have yet to bother my dianthus
Awesome!
Which brand of those green trays with domes do you use? There are so many I am afraid to choose!😮😮😮
They are literally all the same!!! Just different companies willing the same one … pick the cheapest!
Zone 7b/8a NC here. We have huge deer pressure, and carnations are one of the few crops they've never damaged on my farm. So I'd say they are resistant, but not repellent or anything like that. But they're also not the healthiest plants and I'm still trying to work out why...
That’s good to know! I do struggle with crown rot on some of my dianthus.
I am beginner so excuse my silly questions but how should I proceed? How often should I water and in what way: spray or the way you feed before putting seeds into soil? When should I open humidity don? Thanks ahead!
You should water before the soil becomes dry to the touch … I prefer to water from below and allow the soil to suck up the water.
Humidity dome should come off as soon as 50-60% of your seeds have germinated.
@@shesamadgardener thank you so much! Should I open hols in the top before I take dome off complitly? And how should I check the soil? By finger touch?
In Arkansas my dianthus have survived several years without any deer damage
Wonderful!

When do we pinch the seedlings? I’m always confused about the the true set of leaves
I’ll try to do a tutorial on pinching. The first set of leaves you see will be the seed leaves … all leaves after that are true leaves … it’s best to pinch above 2 sets of true leaves.
Thank you!!!
❤
❤️❤️❤️
I planted a hot pink dianthus years ago that blooms forever in zone 6 but have no idea which variety.
Isn’t it always the plants that do the rest where we forget the name?!?!
I've found my dianthus seedlings to be quite foppy and weak as seedlings. It's happened 2 years in a row now...I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
Hmm, that could be a couple of things … light is too far away and they get leggy, but o much fertilizer, or too much water.
I tried your dry packing method and I couldn’t get the soil to moisten all the way through. I checked on them before going to bed and they were still floating. I placed them on top of each other to push the little trays down but the next morning they were still floating. So I tried popping a hole in the side of one whole tray. Hours later, still floating. Idk 🤷🏻♀️
Were you using seed starting mix or potting soil? It only works with potting soil.
@@shesamadgardener ohh ok. Seed starting. Thanks
Waiting for info in comments on deer resistance
A few have said that dianthus is deer resistant in their area!
Where on earth do you plant all this out? 🙂
I love a tightly packed garden, plus I share with my friend, Kristen, and anything the two of us can’t use, I share with my community gardeners.
I love the look, but I’m hesitant because the only person I know that has these they just look ratty for most of the season
I really think it depends on the variety that you choose.
Dianthus do require a little more maintenance. If you want consistent blooms, they have to be deadheaded. The foliage usually stays lush and green year around though. A little bit of fertilizer on a bi-weekly or monthly schedule is also helpful.
I have deers and unfortunately they do eat the buds and flowers of my dianthus plants.
Ugh, thanks for letting us know!
🥰
I have lot deers will not touch them
Good to know!
