The medbay scene where Spock realizes his rejection of emotion has been a mistake after mind melding with a cold machine that wants to evolve beyond itself is an important moment in Trekdome. When Spock takes Kirk's hand, and they just sort of share a mutual nod, it's the one time Spock really acknowledged his deep friendship with Kirk. People don't realize just how close Kirk, Spock and McCoy are in the film/TV series.

Watched the long one already, but watching it here for the voracious UA-cam algorithm.

That was INDEED gayer than I remembered. I haven’t seen this movie in forever; I only really remembered the holding hands scene, but boy, oh, boy. Spock’s character arc in the TOS movies is so, so interesting. And as with the show, I love how much is said about Kirk and Spock’s relationship through looks rather than words. They do that so well. My little heart can’t take it! Can’t wait till WoK on Tuesday!

Finally had a free night! To settle down with a glass of wine and a Star Trek movie. Watched the extended, now to comment and watch the AI-controlled one here.
This movie got Star Trek some Academy Award nominations: visual effects, art direction, and music. Have to say, the little astronaut waving 'byeeeee' from the space dock scaffold as the Enterprise leaves is my favorite. It is perhaps all of humanity in a tiny visual, right there.
Also OMG the recklessness! The transporter does THAT to your science officer and then you send MAIN CHARACTERS through it?!

You posted this on my birthday, lol. So apropos. This movie has a special place in my heart as it was my first experience with Star Trek. It came out when I was a wee child. My parents weren't trekkies, they just indulged my penchant for space movies, of which there were a lot back in the late 70s. Little did I know that I would be a fan for life. Of Star Trek. Of Spock in particular. And eventually K/S when I actually sat down and thought about it instead of just passively regarding it as one of the many facets of trekkie fandom that I could give or take. Anyway, I'm actually gonna go watch your reaction now. I just had to get this out, haha.

Thanks for putting in the link to your extended cut. It's the closest many of us will get to anyone willingly watching Star Trek: Humans Gonna Bone Anything at least Once with us. Anything to get out of those beige ass uniforms, right?

Is it to gay to talk about the Fact, that Vulcans actually have very "sensible" Zones in their Hands, and that he therefore, actually seem to have kissed Kirk in the Med Bay Scene?Be honest Guys, nobody would have ever doubted, if one of them, would be a Man and a Woman. 😏💕

Well, if I suddenly saw the Enterprise floating before me in all its glory, I'd have that look on my face, too. :D
Also, because of the way some of the visuals, cool as they are, really drag out the run time without adding anything, this wasn't dubbed Star Trek: The Motionless Picture for nothing. I still love it, though. I saw it back when it originally came out.
Yes, Decker's going to open that machine up and go looking for the V-spot...................

This is not new. Back in the 70’s a group of nut ladies liked to fantasize that Kirk and Spock were lovers. They went to conventions and wrote gay fan fiction. At first everyone tried to put up with their nonsense but eventually even Roddenberry had enough of it and stated outright that they loved each other deeply as friends and that’s all.

Roddenberry, Nimoy, and Shatner were surprisingly cool about it for straight dudes in the 70s and 80s. Nimoy even joked that Shatner had a stack of Kirk/Spock fanfic under his bed.
Roddenberry rather benignly said that the characters weren't sexually involved but the level of affection was certainly "sufficient enough" for that interpretation, created the term t'hy'la that encompassed platonic, familial, and romantic feelings all at once and pinned it onto Kirk and Spock's relationship, and had the characters respond to the rumors in a neutral-to-positive way in the novelization of the first film (that he wrote himself). That's a LOT for the 70s-90s.
The fandom was much more hostile towards the idea than the creators ever were, but that's your garden variety scifi dudebro homophobia. It's especially ironic given the show's messages of diversity, inclusion, and open-mindedness, but dudebros like that have been missing the point of their fave media for decades.

Why do people need to sexulize every human emotion, Kirk and Spock aren't gay. People need to read some Greek, they share Agape not Eros love.

    • @Gaywatch
      @Gaywatch  2 роки тому

That's a perfectly valid take, and in canon you may be right. The beauty of fandom, though, is that it doesn't have to adhere to canon if it doesn't want to. For me and many others, Kirk and Spock are romantically in love. That's how we choose to engage with the show, and I hope you get as much enjoyment from the way you engage as we do with ours.

@@Gaywatch everyone is free to form options, I just grow tired of the sexualazation and politicization of every breath. The greatest form of love is that one man laid down his life for everyone regardless of their status or position. We are all regarded and loved equally because all human life is precious.
