Yep.When film didn't have numerous drop-kicks and bedroom scenes. Not to judge those kicks and fucks, but: are ya ever gonna see something comparsble to the third man on netflix?
The most sublime ending...there are no words for it really...and the haunting longing of the zyther. My heart breaks still, for love cannot speak here, but weeps only. But that's what love always does anyway. What pure genius. The finest film ever made. Period.
Tom Hogan, I would not agree with You, that this would be the best film eve made, but it is a very good film, indeed. It reflects very well the devided, dark and claustrophobic atmosphere in Europe in late 40'ies. When I first saw this film, I didn't like it's unhappy ending, but the time has changed my attitude to it. Now I think, that it suits like this better than the happy ending would have done. The happy ending would have looked like glued on it afterwards,. Because this film is not about love, the people are not very happy and they are doing things that many of them will feel shame later.
ラストシーンは最も印象的なシーンで、多くの人に感動を与える。 BGMももの悲しく女性の心情を表現できている。この映画を初めて見た時は ビデオがなかった時代なので映画館にこのシーンを見るためにだけに何度も通った。 The last scene is the most impressive scene and touches many people. The background music is also sad and expresses the feelings of a woman. The first time I saw this movie Back in the days when there were no videos, I went to the movie theater many times just to see this scene.
Saw it first-run in a movie theater when I was a kid. Never forgot it. Have seen it many times since. Never grows old. First-rate story-telling and film-making.
Why oh why are movies not made like this anymore?Back then such clever smart sophistication.the truly KNEW exactly what they were doing.Today..oh never mind. Man what a movie!
When I saw this movie for the first time as a teenager I suddenly realized - a few seconds before it actually happened - that Valli WOULD pass Cotton without giving him even a glance. It was the only possible outcome. Everything else would have ruined the whole movie. Mr. Reed was a genius.
Orson WELLES - Joseph COTTEN - ALIDA VALLI e la Colonna Sonora suonata da Anton KARAS. Che ATTORI, che FILM, che MUSICA ma soprattutto che TEMPI. RICCI
That was the first movie my grandpa watched in a cinema after coming home from a Soviet POW camp in 1949. It has been my favourite since then - absolutely great and impressive.
Graham Greene and Kim Philby worked together in MI6 during WW2. In 1949, Greene wrote the screenplay, THE THIRD MAN, whose main character was "Harry Lime." The name was amalgamation: Harry was Philby's first name and "Lime" referred to Greene.
A very moving, extraordinary and poignant ending to an exceptional and notable film. A commentary on the very bleakness and desolation so often of the human condition
A real kick in the teeth for the traditional fairy-tale Hollywod happy ending : in reality the woman would tell the would-be Prince to F.O. for betraying her boy-friend, no matter what an unprincipled monster he may have been. Love it because it´s so true !
the autumn scene evokes..............the zither music stirs up.................the beautiful woman walking past conjures ..................er, oh crap! i can't explain it: let me just put it this way.... this is one of the greatest @#$%^&* endings in the @#$%^&* history of all of world cinema.
Yes you're right: Anna's refusal to go with Martens to the US means she is going to be trapped in the Soviet Union, probably a life sentence in the gulag coz she hung out with Cotten, an American. I remember this stuff from when I was a little girl. It was terrifying, every day, every sleep. Devastating

Oh stop it
You're making me sad
I love the way the music breathes - there are moments when it sighs
one of the best movies of all time! (I was born in Vienna 1949....)
When I saw this movie for the first time as a teenager I suddenly realized - a few seconds before it actually happened - that Valli WOULD pass Cotton without giving him even a glance.

now that is how you end a movie
Possibly the best film ever made, any genre, and certainly the best theme tune ever, also the best ending I ever saw.
No one's happy, but life keeps playing its wonderful tune. Go figure...
That was the first movie my grandpa watched in a cinema after coming home from a Soviet POW camp in 1949. It has been my favourite since then - absolutely great and impressive.
This is the part I remember most of the movie. It's unbearably sad.
That would be the part where it touches you soul.

The best film ending ever. It’s music.
"Your Never Alone with a Strand" old cigarette advert.

Everyone should see this on a big screen.
I was so lucky. In Vancouver BC back in the day, double bills of vintage films at like, about 3 old theatres

In movie-making these days, holding a shot for that long would be unthinkable.
Yes. And so would the script, the location, etc, and especially the music.
Not really. Look at Theo Angelopoulos, for example.
My favourite movie ending of all time.
I think only 'Le Doulos' comes close.
Best film ever made xxx
Me too ❤
Favourite ending ever
Tied with The Searchers for me.
This closing scene closely resembles an earlier scene, so its effect in the movie is quite powerful.
A beautiful scene -- somewhat poignanat ! -- of a fantastic movie !
'Somewhat' lol
Perfetc ending...she had absolutely no regard for him at any point in the story...
I thought Anna was using Martens to possibly help her find Lime
Um dos finais mais lindos da história do cinema de todos os tempos
Ao meu sentir, essa cena jamais será feita em cinema algum. Simplesmente um quadro de uma pintura de gênio.
the best ending ever!
35fps, perfect frame rate for my dogs to watch with me :-)
Probabilmente il secondo miglior finale cinematografico di tutti i tempi
Condivido. RICCI
Condivido!
I waited and waited for him to make a move on the gal, and it never happens.... pissed me off! LOL
She still loved Harry. But the ending leaves it all to chance. Maybe Holly did get the girl - maybe not...
@@OK-dh7xkHolly never got that girl.
Not a Hollywood movie bro
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Superb Film. Shame about the editing of when Holly met Harry in the doorway for the first time. Very shoddy!
I'll check that out. Thanks
Amazing film, amazing ending.
I bet he felt stupid!!
Sometimes in love you have to hit rock bottom, then finally you can move on.
I think he understood.

Susie does LA?
The ending screen says "COPYRIGHT MCMXLIX (...)" .
But, what year was it in arabic numbers?
Does anyone know this particular year?
My guess is 1949.
And your guess is correct!
1949
Mom told me she saw it right after WW2 but that's all she said
They don't make women like that anymore.
I'd like to have a romantic/tragic story like Anna. But those guys like Harry and Martens, I haven't met one
