In my opinion, The Abyss is James Cameron's best film. The effects are great but what really strikes me about this film is the acting. I know the actors had a really hard time making this film but look at the result. The Special Edition from 1993 is easily my preferred version of the film. The Abyss should be the first James Cameron film in the Criterion Collection.
There are two versions of this film. 1989 theatrical release and the special edition that came out in 1993 on home video. The special edition explains more of why the aliens are down there and what there purpose is. It has more of a clearer ending. Ed Harris performance is excellent in his role. Even though Harris and James Cameron didn't get along behind scenes of the making of this film. The special effects are fantastic in the movie. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Her performance is terrific. James Cameron said he wrote this film while he was high school. All I can say is a very entertaining movie. Really well made film by James Cameron.
Nice review Jason, I should mention the movie won an Oscar for it's special effects which is very impress, on the topic of James Cameron have you seen Avatar?

Totally agree. Always had big love for this movie.
It's a great film. But I'd easily rank T1, T2, Aliens, True Lies and Titanic above it

The special effects of the water as the alien enters the ship is next level awesome, especially for the year it was made.

I've seen the original Avatar recently and really enjoyed it, it's great family entertainment. I've not seen the sequel yet but I want to. Cheers
Yup. The original Avatar is good, too.
James Cameron wrote this?
James Cameron wrote and directed The Abyss.

This movie is better than Close Encounters, ET, and 2001.
Watching this review after the Titan imploded 😲. Any thoughts?
