Some of these made me laugh out loud but the one that struck a chord was the one where the person pretended her dad had just gone to the loo and sat with two cups of coffee. I can so empathise with that. I sometimes pretend my dad is away on a very long holiday - he has been dead for 15 years.

My dad used to be a medic in the army during Vietnam. While there, he picked up a few phrases in other languages, such as Vietnamese, Chinese, French, and he already knew English, and would later study Spanish when I was a little boy. Most of what he knew were simple phrases, such as "Stop! Don't do that!" and maybe a greeting or two. What he knew was enough to warn natives with his unit when he noticed danger. When I was in gradeschool, my parents were house parents for an orphanage in Moore Oklahoma. Among the many children they took care of, in addition to myself, were three vietnamese brothers around my age. They were all fluent in multiple languages, and would chatter on with each other in these various languages. It annoyed Mom and Dad when they would do it at the kitchen table during meals. One day, Dad barked out something in Vietnamese, 'Stop that', I think. And then proceeded to tell each of them in the various languages they were chatting in to not do it again. Until the day they left, Dad had them convinced he could understand every word they were saying when in truth, he only knew a few phrases.

Absolutely! It was so hard to watch my mom struggle so hard to converse with my Dementia laden Dad for years. There was a time when she finally saw him as he was in that moment -a shell of the man she’d married decades ago, but still there. Their relationship after that moment, until his death, was so sweet. Had never seen that kind of sweetness between them before.
Love them as they are currently. Don’t force the past on them. It can be such sweet times, memories, moments and years!

I used to work in a care home. I worked on the "closed" ward where people with Alzheimer's and dementia stayed. The ward was locked because most of the people there would wander around, leave the care home and get lost so it was safer for them to keep the door to the ward locked.
Anyhow, I remember how a lot of them would think I was their daughter. While some of them would get upset and say I was never visiting them anymore, others were really happy to see me and they would talk about things that happened when their real daughter was still a child.
I always played along. When they said I wasn't coming to visit anymore I would tell them I had been busy but that I had been there a week ago and that I would be back the following day. When they were reminiscing I would bring up some of their memories I remembered from earlier conversations. In the end they were always happy.
It made me so sad to see that some would never get a visit from their children. I would call the sons/daughters and ask them to please come and visit their mum/dad and most of them would say: "What's the point? (S)He doesn't recognize me anymore, it's just too painful." I would them tell them how mum or dad was asking about them every single day and that maybe they didn't recognize them anymore they still knew they had a son or daughter and they still had memories from when they were small. I would tell them they could share memories with their mum/dad and that it would make them less lonely.
It sometimes worked and they would come and visit again but some were in my opinion pretty selfish and stayed away because it was too painful for them....

Silly, but something I did when I was probably 14, I was at my grandmother's house, and standing out in the yard, I knew I was going to grow up someday and my life would be different, I wanted to remember that moment in my grandmother's yard, (she passed years ago) so I waved up to the sky, and said hi to the me I would become in the future, and once every few years, I travel back in my mind and think of that moment, and I wave back to that little girl. It was just a mind game, I don't know why I thought to do that when I was a kid.

The "racist" with the Prada bag reminded me of an Army Medic I worked with. He was supposedly American Indian. He told me that he would always make blood draws or IVs extra painful for "racists that hate Indians". I asked him how he knew and he said, "I can just tell."
I'm wondering if it wasn't the hate in the person's own heart they were seeing and not actual racism in the other person. I wonder if the Prada handbag held the last photo of a parent or child, an old letter from a lost loved one or a gift for someone that is ill.

Oh I promise, you can tell. Usually because of micro aggressions or body language. The thing is, we pick up this shit sub consciously even when we don't realise it as a survival mechanism. It usually manifests as a feeling of discomfort or not feeling safe. Basically, if you are portraying the body language and micro aggressions the same as every other person they have come across who turns out to be racist. Most white able bodied cis-hets never have to learn this, though, so if the woman who threw the bag overboard was white, the prada woman would have had to have been pretty Fucking racist, overtly so.

Yeah, that one bothered me as well... Being racist isn't a crime, but throwing someone's property into the ocean because of hurt feelings is... That is way too far. Just being someone is a jerk and says terrible things doesn't give anyone the right to turn around and damage personal property or do physical harm. Doesn't make them any better than the people they claim to deserve it.

I'm thinking about all the stuff you have to deal with when your purse is stolen. You have to cancel credit cards, get a new driver's license, maybe get a new passport, you probably have to get a couple new keys made, there could've been medication in there, or jewelry... The week before I was supposed to meet her parents I went to a gay bathhouse and spent time with an older gentleman. Now my girlfriend warned me to avoid talking about the openness of our relationship as her father was a Baptist minister and very devout and religious not to mention judgmental. Imagine my shock and his when I was introduced to her parents only to be shaking hands with the same gentleman I spent the night with days before. I think his shock was greater. Later we had "the talk" alone in his study. We agreed to never mention our encounter to anyone and he agreed to never speak badly of me to his daughter. My girlfriend was so relieved that her Dad and I got along so well. If only she knew.

I worked at a Bob Evans restaurant while I was in college. There was a lovely group of elderly folks who came in around 4pm a few days a week. One guy always ordered 2 entrees. About half of the 2nd entree was eaten by the time they would leave so all us servers didn't think much of it. Dude must just really like the food here.
So fast forward. The guy bought the meal for his wife, who had died in 1978. (This was 2001). The reason half her food was always eaten was that she was a very petite person and had a little quirk about her where she would always get people to eat some of her food, because she could never finish it.
I can't decide if this is incredibly sweet or incredibly sad. Maybe a bit of both? I think the coolest thing about this guy is that he has acquired some amazingly supportive friends. No one shamed him or confronted him with logic or teased him about it. You don't have friends like that in your life unless you deserve them.
I worked there another 2.5 years and by then I was always the waitress they requested if I was working that day. When I told them I was not going to be working at Bob Evans anymore after that day, every person in that group insisted I give them my address. I got Christmas cards from all 8 of them that year. (One lady always put a $10 bill inside it, lol! 😆) As time passed I would get 7 cards a year, then 6, then 5... idk why told this long ass story but I guess I felt like someone out there either needed to hear it or would enjoy it in some way.

I committed this EXACT CRIME with a neighbor's cat 🐈‍⬛ in 2014! He peed on something ONE TIME so they made him live 100% outside. This is Ohio. We have cold winters and at least 4 weeks of +90⁰F heat in the summer. The cat was a slightly chubby, black shorthair. He had a tail that was way too skinny for his body, a pronounced underbite, permanent bug eyes, a weird patch of brown fur shaped like a crescent moon, and instead of meowing he made this weird noise that sounded like "Maaahhhh! Mah-mah! Mah-mah! "Maaaaaaaahhhhh! He was so sweet too. VERY cuddly.
He wanted human attention SO BADLY! His humans would just pour him a whole bag of food once a week and then ignore him. He made friends with my cat and that's when I said f*ck it. This is my cat now!
The assholes didn't even notice he was missing FOR FIVE MONTHS! Then when they realized he was "missing" they didn't do a damn thing to find him other than to ask a few neighbors if they'd see him. This solidified any doubts I had about stealing him.
Finnegan Kearns lived another 9 years with us. For those 9 years he never once experienced stale food or hunger, got too cold, got too hot, got ignored, had to sleep on concrete or got forced outside to fend for himself. He was very affectionate and got tons of chin scratches every day for those 9 years. He died in my arms. The last thing he saw was the face of his rescuer and protector, who he knew loved him very much. This was sad, of course, but Finn didn't die alone and abandoned. He didn't die with no one holding him and softly petting him. To me, that's a win.

More concerning with dementia would be something like turning on a stove burner and forgetting.

That was 6 years ago when I was a kid. Had trust issues, separation anxiety and more since. My sister ran away from home when I was 14. some years later my father was dying of cancer in our home. He had multiple tumors, and one in the brain that made him deteriorate more and more over the course of a year. In the end he was blind and nearly crazy with fear of dying. It was truly horrible. One evening I went into his room and he asked „Is it you xy“ thinking I was my sister who he hadn’t seen in years. I don’t know why but I said „yes“. He then asked „Is everything ok between us“ and I - even though he had been a horrible person and an even more horrible father - had seen him suffer more than enough and wanted to give him at least a little peace and said „yes“. He sighed and I think it really meant something to him, a couple of days later he died. Ten years later after my mom had died as well I found a note that implied that my father had sexually abused my sister….
So basically he died thinking my sister had forgiven him..
I never told her and will never tell her…

Many of these were hilarious but the "Prada incident" one has me worried a bit.
We don't know the context and the whole story, but I mean if you want the racist to learn the lesson, this clearly isn't the best way: They will not link this incident to them being racist but only think of it as a strange misfortune and would not fix their attitude because of this.
Saying racist slurs is a hate crime in some countries but the destruction of someone's property is also a crime. I get the op's point (to ruin the person's day) but commiting crimes to fight against crimes is a very bizarre logic.

Its up to them. Its usually born of ignorance or fear , or both. I try to feel sorry for them , instead of hating them. If i can, i'll try to inform or educate them , but a lot of the time, they are so fixed in their ideas, that they can not learn. " there are none so blind as those who will not see " . If they wont learn , i'll walk away from them. why waste my time with an idiot. It is when their views turn to action and that action starts to hurt others , whether by physical action or by passing a law. Thats when i try to help those who suffer from such actions.
