  • Dr. Lera talks about fevers in dogs with Cisco, a 14-week-old Bernese Mountain dog.
    Fever of unknown origin is a term that is generally used to refer to a persistent fever of greater than 39.7 °C (103.5 °F) for which the underlying cause is not readily evident. Causes of fever are numerous. Possibilities include viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections. Immune-mediated diseases such as immune-mediated polyarthritis and lupus may include fever as a clinical sign. Various neoplastic diseases (tumors) and reactions to some drugs may cause fever. Inflammation or infection of organs in the abdomen or chest can also be associated with fever. (source: VCA Hospitals)

    I just read where a normal temp for dogs is from 100 to 103.1. Is that wrong information I read? Thank you.

      Typically anything above 102.5 is outside the normal range. We obviously have to take other things into consideration as well. Like how the patient is doing over all and any potential lab or diagmostics

    What can we do to help our pooch get better if their temp is at 104.5. Unfortunately, there are no vets where I’m at 😣

    My 1 year old German Shepherd is very inactive today and has a fever of 106F. We are giving her cold towel patches on paws and ears, as well as her hairless area between thighs.

      Just dropped her off at the vet's.
      Her temperature this morning was 105F.
      She was weak but went outside on her own to pee, and jumped into the pickup truck also....
      Vet just called, she is stable but still has temperature, theybare running blood work as we speak and will be taking X-rays as there is suspicion that she may have pyometra.

      @@googlreviews7813 Hi, what happened to your gsd? Did blood reports came back with any issues?

      @Neelesh Singh
      I took her to our vet first thing in the morning, very quickly it was determined that she had Pyometra.
      (Pyometra is the infection in the uterus (womb) of a female dog.)
      She required an emergency surgery but there wasn't any clinics in immediate area that could have done the surgery same day and we were told she had hours not days.
      Finally our vet found a clinic in Richmond Hill/Vaughan, Ontario that said they'll do it right away if I can bring her, it was over two hours drive to get her there but we got her there. Medical staff at the clinic was already waiting for her and she was rushed to surgery, at this point she was already acting as if she was intoxicated, very wobbly.
      Before we got home we received the call from the clinic that surgery went well, fever is subsiding and she is recovering. She was kept and monitored at the clinic for total of 3 days to make sure she is OK to go home. Today she is 18 months old and doing very well, we thought about breeding her once before this ordeal but it won't happen, during the surgery same procedure was performed as when female dogs get spayed, so no puppies for her. But we are very grateful that she is still with us. (Thank you for asking ❤️)
