this tank tend to get overhated by the internet for it's performance history, the thing is this tank always faced by much superior armoured vehicles and wepons such as TOW missiles. it was a good tank for it's time (late 50s and 60s) yet it's one of the most reliable,cheap tanks you can find which if you use right tactics can be really helpful. I was a gunner of a t55am2 tank and was participating on an offensive against the Tamil terrorist organization called the LTTE ( Sri Lankan civil war). the t55am2 had an advantage against the typical t55A, it had a better fire control system with a laser rangefinder, smoke discharges and add on composite armour against rpg or HEAT rounds, gotta say it's very cramped inside, and very hot inside (coz this tank was intended to use on Europe and in Sri Lanka it's a tropical climate), gun depression and elevation is questionable 😅 this tank will be a death trap on urban warfare without infantry support, and the loader should be left hand dominant to actually load a round within less than 5 seconds, even though there was a laser range finder we still had to adjust the gun manually.and last thing the reverse speed on these tanks are abysmal, alot of our casualties happened thanks to it's stupid reverse speed, here are couple of good things about this tank = it's cheap as frick, easy to do maintenance, easy train new crew, good gun for anti infantry role, since we didnt face anything rather than our own t55 captured by them against us, which we decimated it with CAS...it's upgradable so you can be creative but putting upgrades like thermals on this things is a waste of money in my opinion.i would say the best use for these tanks are to be used as self propelled artillery, it has a something called a an coordinate table which the gun can be used as an artillery piece, this might be the same reason Russians are using the t55s and t62s now, those tanks can be used as mobile field guns and I can tell you the 100mm frag round really does a good job on anti infantry role.
