"Get on Up" is a song by American R&B group Jodeci recorded for their third album, The Show, the After Party, the Hotel (1995). The song was released as the third and final single for the album in 1996. "Get on Up" contains the sample of the 1981 song from Quincy Jones featuring Toots Thielemans' "Velas". Produced by Mr. Dalvin, it is the only Jodeci single to date that was not produced or written by group leader DeVante Swing.
"Mr. Dalvin” DeGrate singer, songwriter, musician, producer and member of the iconic, multi-platinum selling recording group JODECI, known for breathing new hip-hop and soul fire into the R&B music genre continues to release solo singles Goodtimez, She Bad, And I, and Inseparable with a full solo album following.
As rumors of a JODECI MOVIE continue to swirl throughout the industry, Mr. Dalvin forges ahead establishing himself as a powerhouse of musical versatility. While he remains one-quarter of the legendary group JODECI, Mr. Dalvin’s early training revealed that his entertainment contributions would go deeper than just being a vocalist for the band. His other ventures include his solo projects and producing artist under his label K.A.M.P. Muzik.
Mr. Dalvin quickly became acquainted with the art of entertainment. He continued in his precocious ways at age 15 when he jumped in the car with big brother DeVante and the Hailey brothers, K-Ci and JoJo for the journey to New York, where the group auditioned for and were signed by Uptown Records Andre Harrell.

We Love the 80s, 90s & 00s!
"Get On Up" has a gospel feel to it, which is the reason I love it 😀
Facts. Very church-like and I loved it 👍
Yes! Very country 😂 Southern Soul Blues
It actually did crossover into the gospel territory. Hezekiah Walker used the chorus for “I Can Make It”
Yep i was just thinking that
"Stay" was one of my favorite by Jodeci they killed that song
"Get On Up" is a top three Jodeci song for me. I can see why Devante probably didn't like it because his production and arrangement was almost like this futuristic ambient/R and B/ Hip Hop blend. A prime example of that is "Freek'n You". That's the Jodeci sound.
So Mr. Dalvin comes with "Get On Up" that sounded more like R and B/ Blues two step music; so he probably felt it wasn't their lane. It's almost like them singing "Wifey" by Next. At first I wasn't as big on it but after a few weeks listening to the harmony blends on the hook, I was sold.
Facts I love that song 😍❤️
U make a great point when comparing the different types of sounds the brothers produced
@@j-dub22 fact's get on up sounds like a boyz to men song very clean
Well, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I feel that Mr. Dalvin is very much underrated as a producer, musician, and vocalist and he's made a lot of music I like over the years 💯... The Jodeci/Wu-Tang collaboration Dalvin produced will FOREVER be a bop!❤
That was a banger. That remix
I was in 8th grade when this came out and my mom played this every morning in 96.positive song
The song was such a positive hit that Hezekiah Walker and Love Fellowship Crusade Choir sampled it on “I can Make It/Get on Up” on the Live in London album
Man that band is sick and good to see these legends still going. Get on Up is covered by soooo many cover bands these days and is a classic!
then he messed around made a remix with the "Seven Minutes of Funk" sample...bonkers! respect to Mr Dalvin 🙏🏾
Yassss!!! My favorite group in the Whole World!! Y'all still got it going on!!! Jodeci 4 Life ❤️💯💯👏😘
Love they're energy during live performances
*their*
I loved Get on Up, *The Def Squad Remix*. That version was so dope, the creative way they incorporated the bass from the 80's song by Nu Shooz 'I can't wait' 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great interview by the way bro 👏🏾 👏🏾👊🏾
*bass*
@Jay's Kicks N Fits Thanks for the correction. 👌
@@9etherking707 You're welcome. 👍🏻
man they should've released that version and made a video for that remix.. it was amazing
@Leroy Strokesmen 100% bro. That remix could've done with a music video for sure
Inspirational song
That Was my jam Get On up
D. IS THE MAAAANNN BUT GET ON UP IS THE JAM THO!!![999]
That was the Jam.
To say this guy didn't like this song he was sure jamming on stage in that video they had on line green jackets lol he was happy as hell to do that choreography.... Probably because of nostalgia
He didn't like it back then he probably like it now but back then can understand it's not your normal jodeci song's it sounds like a song boyz to men can sing very clean
He said in the ‘95 VIBE interview it was too happy.
GET ON UP was my song back in 1995
where is the biopic at im been waiting
I love the song, but I can understand why Devante didn’t initially care for it. It’s not your typical Jodeci record and didn’t follow the same formula as the other hits that the group produced. It’s always a risk when an artist or group goes against the grain, but it worked.
I never liked "Get On Up".
Why wasn't DeVante in the video?
Get On Up was....THE ONLY GOOD PARTY SONG JODECI HAD. DeVante should be grateful. End of story.
I hated 'get on up' too. It was the song they would play at the end of the night, to get people out the club. But I like it a bit better now. It is not the typical Jodeci song.
🤭
It didnt have that feeling like stay and come and talk to me
I forgot this classic was also on the Don't Be a Menace SDTK
What is the best seller song of blackstreet? No digitty!
All the group hated it!
Except Teddy
@@spacemind8636 Because he mad it.
Well that was kind of the initial fallout with Guy. Teddy was bringing more and more hip hop to the Guy sound and Aaron and Damion weren't quite feeling it. I suppose the same thing with Blackstreet. Teddy was the hip hop head and the other guys were pure singers.
@@raygu1818 Halls brother love rap too.Aaron has songs with Biggy,Heavy D,2Pac.With a lot of rappers .But Riley wants to lead guy and Aaron too!
2 genius in the same band should be hard to organise. Both are complementary.Hall inspired a lot of singers but few people respect Aaron Hall.He should have his star on Hollywood boulevard too.Beyonce,Mary J Blidge,Justin Timberlake are all Aaron Hall kids!
Nooooooo That's not K Ci!!!! lol Still my dude
I agree. I hated that song!!
I didnt like it either…cant compare to any Devante production.
Oh wow you didn't why
Oddly one of my least like songs by them
Please can you please find better content. A Jodeci song?
🤔
Get On Up was my favorite song on the album. It’s an uplifting track.
“Positive is the attitude, negative is not the mood”
Get On Up is the song on my phone as a alarm I get up to every morning
I play this song for my daughters when I’m waking them up for school in the mornings 😂 and I always do the Jodeci peace sign ✌🏾 ✌🏾 😂
🤭👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Facts
Maybe Devante didn't like it because he wasn't in control. That's probably why he didn't appear in the music video. We know Devante created most of their hits but Get on up is still one of my faves from them. Mr DALVIN did a phenomenal job
Yes I think that's why Jodeci didn't continue their run because Devante controlling ways along with his substance abuse.Self centered and selfish along with paranoia.
@@lornawest47 I agree with everything u said 👍
Nope that song is trash period
@@lornawest47 nope that song is trash period 🗑
He wasn’t in the video because he has a severe fear of flying and there was schedule conflict with his other projects . That was already confirmed. He didn’t like the song at first because it had too much of a happy sound to it than the whole concept of the album but he said he loves it now because it has a great vibe.
Some fans don't know. Mr.Dalvin produced and wrote a few songs on every album they put out
Except the first album. But the 2nd & 3rd & maybe the last one. But possibly
It's a lovely song but it was very different to the rest of the album sonically and lyrically. Maybe Devante had a different creative vision and wanted to place another song on the album.
The song was a hit though.
I was literally listening to that song on his morning…definitely one of my favorite Jodeci songs.
I really wish they just did a autobiopic Movie or at least Headline a tour 🙄. Jodeci was such an impact on the R&B culture..
They could lowkey have a mini series. That's how much each of a story each of them have
They are working on the Biopic
You got your wish
I have a feeling that DeVante would have preferred "Bring On Da Funk" to be the single in Place of Get On Up since both of them are uptempo Bring on Da Funk still has his signature sound, I would have personally preferred for that to be the single in all honesty.
Devate just live that drugs music
Halftime chat does it again !!! :) - Hope you can one day interview Chico Debarge ! :)
I hope so too! 🤭
I loved get on up because it was different. A little more up tempo but still smooth.
that fact that people argue about what song THEY think is better like OPINIONS don’t matter is sad and funny
Get On Up may have blessed somebody that was feeling down and the vibe made them actually wanna do better and Get On Up
just because YOU don’t like a song
doesn’t make the SONG bad
OPINIONS STILL MATTER
JOJO is sounding better and better after each upload🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm missing out.
What has he being doing?
I do remember him losing his voice to an extent.
The crazy thing is l patterned my vocals after JO and l hate saying this but l don't sing how l did in the 90s and it's very discouraging when he had great vocals.
Get On Up has aged well it’s a song that they can sing forever every group needs at least one song that you can play for everybody 18-80 lol
Exactly why I stated this is only one of a few songs I like by them yet I'm getting attacked for not liking their debut album. Notice how a few said this song Get On Up is trash and I didn't challenge their opinion. It's weird how people think their opinion or popular opinion should apply to all. Get On Up is one of those songs that has an Al Green back porch soul feel to it that all ages can appreciate. Also Maze Before I Let Go would be another great comparison to Get On Up.
Listen...
Devante I love you and everything but THAT TUNE IS A HIT!!!!!
Big tune! Real positive! Good vibes!
Thank goodness y'all kept it and didn't give it away 😶
I bet he did!!!😂😂😂😂
It just wasn’t very Jodeci-Y
🤭
Exactly this song is trash
That's my jam...got a lil church in it.
😂
dalvin was more funk driven producer no one else mary j blige, curiousity aaron hall , get on up jodeci and sista brand new remix. devante hears things differently like i listen to stuff for jodeci , tony thompson , usher, kurupt , danny boy , renee anderson and bassment and stuff outside bassment stuff for liberty city come on back very simple but arrangement is amazing and imajin he very different as producer, arranger and incredible writer.. if you listen to ray j wet me you might think its wack song but you listen to arrangement after the first verse and hook you here harmony's and arrangement you end up liking the song..
*Dalvin*
One of my favorites
Dalvin did the damn thang
That's one of my favorite jodeci songs
One of my favorite Jodeci fast joints
Annnnnndd Youuuuu can’t sit dowwwn 🎶
It’s how people create narratives. 😂 Dalvin said in one interview that he don’t really like the ballads, he likes the uptempo music. Devante is the opposite, he prefers the ballads over the uptempo stuff.
"Get On Up" is a BANGER!" Can't even front, I used that outro as a guideline for when I stepped to women at the club. 🤣
I don’t really care for that song either. It’s still a jam tho.
😅
This was a jam . Didn't know DeVante wasn't in the video
Love You Ms Vë !
Still one of my favorite Jodeci songs.
Get on up is my jam !!!!
That was my joint back in the day!!!!!!
I don't see why. "Get On Up" is one of their hottest songs. 🤷🏾♂️
Reached number 1 without Devante
Get On Up was one of my favorites. I can't hear that and not get up and go to the dance floor.
Great song and album
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !*
_Tappin' in from South Central LA_
Sheiiiid, Get On Up is HORRRRD ! I still bump that in my lowrider. My oooonly issue with it is I wish they'd done an extended version because it's over too fast ! Aside from that, salute to the legendary Jodeci.
🤜🏾💥🤛🏾
It is (along with Love U 4 Life) the best song on that album.
Get on up always keep the Party lit
That song is a classic
This song was a big departure from their other hits and album cuts and it did kinda feel like the end of an era with the four of them. I felt the shift around ‘96. But still really liked this song! ❤️
Thats my ISH
Still Rocking in 2023
Never Really Knew Mr. Dalvin Wrote or Produced.
Cause it’s corny. But it’s Jodeci. So….
😅
Wow can't believe he didn't like that song. No lie I still play get on up to this day. Song is fire!!! Love the harmonies when they say parrrttty,!!! all day!!never stop!! never stop!!
I always turn it up when it gets to that part and try to harmonize. Lol
DeVantè is on a whole nother level. If he didn't like it, he just didn't like it. DeVantè is a musical genius. They are all equally talented and gifted in their own rights.
😘💯😘
I believe Stevie J plays the guitar on this.
RECOMMENDED SONGS
1. DANGEROUS - DALVIN DEGRATE .
2. SLOW DRAG - DEVANTE SWING.
3. WHISPERS - DEVANTE SWING FEAT - USHER.
4. GONNA BE YOUR NIGHT - DEVANTE SWING FEAT RENEE ANDERSON.
I hate it too!!!!! My dad loved it
😅
it make part of black music
👍
KCi voice is so stand outess! Peace!
I can see why he argued against the song being on the album. It doesnt sound like a Jodeci song and it diesnt fit with the rest of the album. DeVante is a visionary and probably wanted a specific flow for the album.
I personally don't hate it, but ive never been a big fan either.
One of my fave joints!!💖
That song was dope..
This was a jam
I remember when i first heard get on up the video was featured on tv and i didnt like it it didnt feel like a signature Jodeci song, its ok but not one that i personally play
Great tune Dalvin. Made me go get the solo album on Maverick. CGC. ✊🏿
The live version sounds better than the recorded version
That’s a sample of something. I just can’t remember it
That was a good feeling song that would make anybody get up on the dance floor to this day and in the future
That song is crazy good …and Dalvin was my favorite 🤩
Where can i see the full rehearsal video?
Not my favorite from them but it's a good song I can't lie !!!!
it reminds me of boyz to men vibin song
This song is in my playlist- great summer bbq tune, man!!
Definitely one of my favorite songs❤️
One of my favorites
The remix is better
I hated that song too.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
40 lashes tho😂 gotta get Dalvin and Umar on a track
😅😅😅
Mr.Dalvin just out of nowhere starts singing this like when Kobe teased Jalen Rose! Peace!
❤️🖤💚☝🏿
