  • This video shows you two basic variations of Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi.
One is the more traditional version, which I prefer. The other is more commonly used in contest today.

This is one of my very, very favorite throws Sensei, I grew up doing Judo and my friend Sensei Steve Kauffold would throw me with this so fiercely and sometimes not let go of my other sleeve, making it impossible to slap out of Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi, making it extra hard when you fall, a definite good self defense throw if you ask me! Thank you for making great videos and tutorials. All the best. :-) I'm much more natural performing right handed throws, but this is an easier throw to teach both right and left handed, making it easy for a right handed person to perform left handed and vice versa. A great throw to use right after bowing in and getting your grip right out of the gate and you can transition to so many other throws if your grip doesn't end up working out while fighting a fast and tough opponent.

The most important key point as I understood is the time that we push uki s arm to his left and down and as soon as react up, we can change the hand grip and proceed Sode T.G. Thanks a lot Sensei!

I learned from neutral stance like in karate that dosnt favorite a stance this throw thru me off cuz if im left handed most people collar hand is right hand so instead of grabbing there collar i should prevent n go for this southpaw step over seoi nage was my move yet i struggled with sleeve throws..........this move became easy to me cuz i peeped im use to switchin between both in real life u move with left n right hand n feet not just 1 stance ......had to learn loud people on my opposite hip n shoulder......thank you this video was so informative💯🙏🏽

Thank you for this video! Can i use this grip for Tai Otoshi? Double handed Tai otoshi can be performed and sometimes it is really effective but i want to know can i use this Sode Tsurikomi Goshi grip for Tai Otoshi instead of usual grip to make my opponent think that i will throw him to the right and than throw him to the left.

      Hi Cerb,
Yes, you can definitely use this grip to produce a Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi / Tai Otoshi hybrid throw. It is something I have used many times in competition and randori, and is a great way to disorientate your opponent. Give it a go and let me know how you get on!

Thank you for the reply! I will try to do this technique when i will visit my Dojo next time.Usual Sode Tsurikomi Goshi (as well as Ippon Seoi Nage and O goshi ) is not so easy to use for me because i need to crouch very low because i'm high for my weight class that's why i want to combine Sode Tsurikomi Goshi grip for my Tai Otoshi and Ippon Seoi nage grip for O soto.Greetings from Ukraine ! Happy Easter!
