Rene' Warren oh, it is! Great fun. Just make sure you catch the drips off with a skewer or something so you don't end up with a bumpy rim. Enjoy it! Kalena 😀
Beautiful pots. I want to learn how to do this. Thank you so much for posting the videos for someone like me who needs to learn. You have inspired me to not have fear and just do it. :)
Latressa Allen the sky is the limit, it's so much satisfaction and fun seeing the paint create patterns and watching them change and settle. My only suggestion on using glass as opposed to terracotta is to make the paint a little thicker to decrease the amount of flow as the glossy surface of glass means the paint wants to keep flowing and will get quite thin. The inside will look fascinating as well! All the best, Kalena
Kalena Flows I've been diy's for a short time and I'm tired of glitter and bling and I've wanted to learn how to do this when I do my vase I'll share it with you once again thanks
Latressa Allen I'd love to see it. I have some clear glass projects waiting for me but was in a car accident last weekend where another car hit me and my wrist was badly sprained so I'm a little out of action. Desperate to get back!
Sara Mahoney I'm glad you liked it and that it inspired you. You make a good point on the music side too. Often I pick it in the wrong mood! I must be more conscious of it... good luck with your pour, don't forget to water proof the inside first! Kalena
Definitely the right decision, they are both quite beautiful. I haven't watched you before, but most certainly shall again. Thank you. By the way, please do more videos with you talking (as opposed to just music), you are fun and interesting to listen to!!!
Jill Bull I think you're the first person to request more chatter from me! Thank you most sincerely. I'm glad you stumbled across my clips and enjoy them. 🙂
Linda Johnston thank you for your words. If I can give you one tip for doing pots, make your paint slightly thicker than you normally would to get better coverage on the pots. I made several pretty but awful mistakes with these when I started doing them! And I was determined to get cells! Ultimately when I did, I didn't like them. So now I just use sparkles instead, pearl paints or added iridescent medium. All the best with yours 😊
Thank you :) the silicone adds a clearer and more uniform cell structure to the pattern produced by the layers of paint. It isn't necessary to add it as you will still get a cell structure without it, it will simply be different. The heat brings out the cells quicker so you will get more uniformity as more will dorm at the same time, again, this is the case with or without silicone. Neither heat nor silicone is necessary and passing around with different combinations will let you discover your preferences. Good luck, I know you will enjoy it!
I'm wondering if the porous pots would be more vivid if you had sprayed them first with a sealer? Asking because I want to try this. They are great. What does the inside look like with the hole allowing paint in?
Sharon Carty if you check out a couple of most recent videos you'll see that the varnish put on at the end actually makes the colour pop and it looks like when it was wet. These ones just sold before I remembered to photograph them finished!
Sharon Carty oh and I missed responding to your second question, sorry, the inside of the pot is all clear from paint as I have the pots sitting on cups so the extra paint falls directly into there and can be used for another pour sometimes though usually is too messy by then. Have a great day! Kalena
Shibani Datta thanks! I use extra paint as I create jewellery from the flow off paint when it dries. Using less paint isn't a problem as looking as you manage to cover the entire pot.
Thank you :) I use a terracotta sealer on the inside and varnish the finished product on the outside. I have pots that I painted 5 years or more so which live outside with plants in them. They still look brand new.
Hi Kalena, I just found you and this video. I love your work, and I am so very impressed with your kindness in sharing your info with us new painters. I have Liquitex standard acrylic paints. How will they work in comparison with the paints you use? Also, I live in the California desert. Do you think the painted pots can stand up in summer extreme heat? Thank you!
Hi! Thank you Susan, I'm pleased you've enjoyed my work. Pour painting will work just as well with any type of acrylic paint, the only thing you will find is the necessity to change the amount of liquid you add depending on the viscosity of the paint. I've used very thin acrylic paints and added more PVA in order to thicken it slightly and then added Floetrol - less than if I use the heavy body paints. Basically which ever type of paint you use you'll still be targeting the same end texture of warm honey - it should flow smoothly but not quickly from your mixing stick when you lift it from the container. Hope this helps!
Oh, and yes, there's no reason the heat will cause problems. Here in Australia mine have been outdoors for more than 2 years in temperatures up to 45 Celsius and have not been damaged.
Thank you so much. If you use silicone, do you need to clean the surface after the pot drys, before you spray varnish? I can't wait to try this. My friend is ill, and a colorful flower pot will cheer her up.
I understand that a lot of painters will wash canvases to remove silicone but it's not something I've ever had trouble with - the varnish has always stuck cleanly and I've still got no discolouration on my original paintings. Not much silicone is used and I use a spray so maybe that's why. Regarding the heat (other than my heart going out to you! ) I'd simply suggest trying to find the coolest place you can for the pots to dry as it can apparently cause problems if they dry too quick. Maybe a basement. Dry and not too hot or humid. At this time of year I'm guessing the heat wouldn't be excessive as it's early spring. I hope your friend gets great enjoyment from your gift and recovers quickly. Stay safe and well, Kalena
Aqidas Irisab hi, you would but you may find it peels off very readily. I would try it like that first then, if it doesn't work, perhaps rubbing the vase with sandpaper to create a rough surface for the paint to stick to will work. Good luck!
Ranjit Kaur the colour names all appear on screen at the beginning of the clip. As for brand, I'm using Mont Marte dimension heavy body acrylic paints for all of them. 🙂
Thank you! I use Dulux indoor/outdoor clear gloss spray for the pots. This has worked fantastically for me. You should be able to find this or similar product in any paint shop.
I use a terracotta sealant on the inside before pouring. After the pour I apply dulux matt clear indoor outdoor spray. Typically 2 coats. I have quite a few pots which have been in use outside for years now and still look brand new.
Oh WOW! Those are beautiful! Guess I know what to do with all those pots I have on a shelf in the garage! Did you use some sort of primer before and what kind of varnish?
Llana Dyess thank you. I don't use a primer on the pots. Internally I seal them to waterproof them and use a regular terracotta pot and ornament sealer. After painting I finish with an indoor outdoor clear gloss made by dulux. I have half a dozen sitting on my front porch by the door with succulents growing in them.
sonia rathore hi, I use magenta, silver, phthalo blue and sapphire blue in heavy body Mont Marte dimensions paint. These are a quite thick paint which allows me to have the paints thicker and extend them further.
Could you tell me what products you use to seal the pots before painting, then what you use as a varnish once the paint dries? I’m trying to get all the supplies I need to try this, but I have no idea what I’m looking for 😅
Hi there, as I make these for outdoor use, I use a clear indoor outdoor dulux spray. It comes in matt and gloss and protects the paint extremely well. I have several pots which have been outside for 4 years now, one is wooden and being well waterproofed and varnished, it has sat in all weather and sunshine and still looks fresh. Good luck!
Jane Valle Oi obrigado! Kalena
Hi, thank you. The paint is mixed with Floetrol, PVA, and a very small amount of silicone. You can use water instead of Floetrol but I prefer the latter as the patterns are a little crisper.
Swagger King hi there, I'm afraid I can't give you an answer on this one as I've not worked with epoxy. There's only one way to find out! Pick some colours and give it a whirl, you may be on to a beautiful thing. Art is all about having an idea and playing with it to see if it works if you can't find someone else already doing it. It's trial and error and learning along the way, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but it's fun! I hope you give it a go.
Katrina Hoskin hi! I used Bondall Pot and Ornament Sealer. It's a terracotta pot sealer. In Aus it's available at hardware stores and plant nurseries. I'm sure you'd be able to find similar anywhere else, just a matter of asking in shop for how to waterproof the pot. All the best!
Katrina Hoskin the sealer only takes around 4 hours. Two coats are needed to achieve a decent degree off waterproofing though. From memory I think it's 4 hours between coats then 48 until it can be used for plants.
What did you use to place the pots on to hold them off the table? They are lovely and I would like to do this with a group of seniors in a long term care so I am working at getting all the tips I can on how to do it the easiest way possible. Thanks
Donna Buchan I'm fortunate that I have a big enough table to leave them there and get several pours going to dry at a time, however, if they're left for a couple of hours for the paint to absorb into the pot, they are then dry enough to move and you could put them on a bench. Mine sit on a moveable circle of thin melamine so that they can be moved easily anyway. To stand them high enough to pour them I have them on inverted cups so they are not touching the pouring surface. They're inverted so that isn't excess paint pooling in the centre hole, it drains into the cup instead. Doing this as a project how you've mentioned is a great idea and I'm happy to give you further info if you like, just drop a line here and ask. Good luck with it!
swagata ghosh Thank you :) I used Mont Marte Dimension brand paint which is a thick paint. Also, I think the use of floetrol only instead of adding water to the mix increases the glossy finish. On top of that, I use high gloss spray finish which gives a beautiful shine to the end product. With some paints I add a small amount of gloss medium and I also frequently use an iridescent medium to give even more shine, especially in the darker colours. I hope this helps :)
Paintball you :) Paint to Floetrol will vary slightly depending on how thick the paint is. I use a high density paint which is almost as thick as peanut butter. You can mix this with a combination of water and Floetrol or with just Floetrol (in addition to the pva). My preference is to leave out the water as I feel the results are crisper. I would usually end up using at least 3 times as much Floetrol. The aim is to achieve a fluid which has the consistency of warm honey - a little thick but not so thick that it's dripping off the end of your mixer. Hope this helps!
I tried this, I spray painted it first with white paint and then I used ready pour acrylic paint but it did look this good, what did I do wrong. Please help
Difficult to say. I leave the external surface raw, it isn't treated with anything prior to pouring. Only the interior surface is treated and that is with the terracotta sealant. I do layer the paint a lot in the cup to increase the patterns in the final effect. The beauty of it is that if you aren't happy with the result you can easily pour over the top again. Sorry I can't help more, I'm certain you'll gain a feel for what you like as you play with the technique. I poured a lot of canvas before trying pots!
adnan satti2018 hi they are all Mont Marte dimension acrylic paints. The paints are very thick which makes them ideal. They are an Australian company so I'm not sure where they are available. outside Australia.
Thank you :) I try to use all the paint and usually create jewellery with the paint once it has dried - this is why I use a melamine coated board under the pot. If the paint runs onto glass or wood it's difficult, if not impossible, to remove and reuse.
Syly Syly I pour directly onto the pots. The inside is treated and the varnish that goes on the paint waterproofs the outside. Also the floetrol and pva go towards helping to waterproof the outside but on their own don't waterproof.
Kalena Flows, You said the inside of the pots are treated. What are they treated with? I would like to make a bunch of these as gifts for the ladies in my church. 😊❤️
Syly Syly that would be a lovely gift! They're treated with Bondall terracotta pot and ornament sealer. I picked it up at a hardware shop. It shouldn't be too difficult to track down a similar product if you can't find the same where you are. I'd guess any plant nursery or place that sells pots would be able to point you to the best product for the job. All the best with it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
rkyobo I haven't used minwax so would suggest contacting the manufacturer to see if they have any advice on if they would recommend it for this kind of product. I use generally 2 or 3 coats of Micador spray varnish. I decide on how many coasts by how well the coats have adhered and that is usually dependent on how much silicone I've used in the paint.
Ankita Chaudhari I wouldn't think so, terracotta is too porous. I'd think out would need a glaze internally. Mine aren't food safe and I don't use food safe spray. If you do want to try a mug you'd need to find a paint you can bake and a varnish which will withstand high temperatures. As yet I haven't been successful!
WOW the pots are spectacular and the colors even more beautiful. Thank you for sharing this pour.

Anjala Ahmad thank you ☺
Magnifique superbe jolie jouer avec les couleurs c'est superbes
Papillionvert Merci. Vert Je suis content que tu les aies appréciés.
Very nice both of them .
Which type of colours is this?
adnan satti2018 hi they are all Mont Marte dimension acrylic paints. The paints are very thick which makes them ideal. They are an Australian company so I'm not sure where they are available. outside Australia.
Kalena Flows thnxx for rply me.😍
Beautiful, but why so much waste or do you reuse those leftovers?
Thank you :) I try to use all the paint and usually create jewellery with the paint once it has dried - this is why I use a melamine coated board under the pot. If the paint runs onto glass or wood it's difficult, if not impossible, to remove and reuse.
beautiful ! They didn't need gesso ?
Abstraddic thank you 🙂 nope, they didn't need gesso.
Where do you find the beautiful shaped terra-cotta pots? Your work is beautiful!
Marjie NS816 Thank you 🙄 I pick the pots up from gardening shops. I love this shape too. I'm glad you enjoyed watching. Kalena
The shape of the pot really matters.
WOW Beautiful Very good Video
예쁘네요😍😘😘
do you put a coating over them if you want to use them for outside so the paint don't come off ?
LINDÍSSIMO.... AMEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.... BJOSSSS.... 🇧🇷
They are beautiful!!!! Do you just put them straight on the pots or do you put something on them before the paint?
Syly Syly I pour directly onto the pots. The inside is treated and the varnish that goes on the paint waterproofs the outside. Also the floetrol and pva go towards helping to waterproof the outside but on their own don't waterproof.
Kalena Flows how many coats of varnish do you use, and could I use Minwax polycrylic varnish? Do you recommend spray or paint-on varnish?
After baking, can terracota coffee mugs be used directly without glazing them??
Ankita Chaudhari I wouldn't think so, terracotta is too porous. I'd think out would need a glaze internally. Mine aren't food safe and I don't use food safe spray. If you do want to try a mug you'd need to find a paint you can bake and a varnish which will withstand high temperatures. As yet I haven't been successful!
Kalena Flows Thanks 😄
