One of my favorite things about your renovation videos is that I feel like you're customizing the house for YOU, not as a flipped property for profit. I love when people are able to set down roots and thrive. Thank you again for sharing!

You have done such an amazing job on this house. I follow a lot of renovation videos on youtube, but your videos are the ones that give me the warmest feeling. Your house is so so charming and I love that its right next to a creek/river. So cozy! You're living the dream, girl(I understand it might not always feel like it haha). The easiest, cheapest, and most impactful change I love is replacing all the light switches and outlet plates. I chose decorative bronze ones (from Lowe's) so they weren't cheap, but I bought a room's worth at a time and even had to special order a few. This small change made a huge difference, making a boring newer build house feel like my home and not a rented box. When we sold that house, I took the plates with me and was able to use them in my next home. This also created a great sense of continuity in our living space. I can still remember the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I felt every time I finished the replacements in each room. When we moved out, the last thing I did was remove them and replace them with the awful boring ones. It was meaningful because it was a gesture that acknowledged this was no longer our home, but the house of a new family. Sounds silly, but we lived there for the first ten years of my kids lives and leaving hit me harder than I expected. I love how cozy your upstairs hallway feels, can't wait to see what you choose for the bathroom!

hey ariel, i don’t know if you’ve ever looked into doing something to stabilize the banks of the river behind your house, but if you’ve never had someone take a look at it, i would recommend it. i know a family who’s house sat close to a river that flooded after a big snow and the extra water destabilized the banks and made their house unlivable, as it was falling in :( it might not be a problem for you, but safety first!!

Since you understandably don’t want to share the front of your house, one idea would be to do a video of a flower/plant bed if you do any landscaping. It would be an aspect of the project that could still maintain your privacy as long as you’re careful with your angles. It might look sparse until the plants grow in but either update later once they grow in or don’t share at all so there’s even less chance of someone identifying your house. Plants do so much to help make a house have more curb appeal.

I feel you!! My husband and I moved into our house 7 years ago - shocking to me - this is the LONGEST I’ve ever lived ANYWHERE! I’m 40 years old and I grew up with a father in the military so I moved every 1-3 years my entire life, even after I moved out on my own. It took my husband (who also moved quite often all of his life) and I a few years to feel settled and even then we were like “our next house we’ll do this and that…” and then we were like “wait, why are we going to move again? This house is actually perfect for us and we can do SO MUCH with it and the land we own…” and now we’re SETTLED settled in here and working on making it truly our own. Last year we added four new raised garden beds, this year we’re adding chickens, our next big goal is an addition with attached garage and office spaces…it feels good to finally feel settled for the first time in my life. I’m SO excited for you!

If you fix everything needed on the outside of your house. Then rent an airless paint sprayer you could paint your whole house 2 coats in under 1 week. I painted a one story house 2 coats in 1 day, except the trim which took 2 days. I had no help. Doing only part it the house at a time is not very efficient

  • @Stacy_SJA
    @Stacy_SJA 8 місяців тому +4

So im doing tiling right now… definitely not on your level tho!
But I found this tile, backsplash trim. It’s just a long trim that you can add to the front or sides of your tile work.
    Maybe there’s something better?
But I think that would also give your fireplace tile floor a more finished look. It’s very cheap too, less than $10 for 10ft.

The Spooky Room would be awesome as a creative room - arts, crafts, and a permanent set-up for BOOKBINDING. Yes I say that in all caps. Imagine how much you could expand on your bookbinding supplies - the little cubby holes of tools and thread, rolls of paper, a gluing table, and a guillotine and a book-press both set up in a permanent spot where they weren't in the way of anything else and also so you didn't have to move stuff ('cause they're heavy). Imagine the possibilities!! And it would be such a beautifully aesthetic space for this as there's something more "old-worldy" about that room, with the beams etc. Just imagine - Ariel's Spooky Binding!

  • @mlaiuppa
    @mlaiuppa 8 місяців тому +7

You need to do the outside of your house simply to protect the wood. The longer you wait, the more damage is done and the more expensive it is to repair. Don't just do the front for "pretty". Do the entire house to protect it. You will also find damage that needs to be addressed like cracks in the wood or seams opening up between clapboards. Be careful painting the windows as you want no paint in the inside where the windows are moving up and down. That needs to be bare. Replace all of your sash cords.
I speak from experience, having done what you are doing 30 years ago when I bought my house. You can insulate your attic yourself very easily. I did it the second year I moved into my old 1922 house. Buy a few rolls each month until the entire attic is done. You will notice a huge improvement in the house's ability to retain heat.
Be really cautious removing walls, posts, etc. Get an engineer in to identify what is and is not load bearing and where load bearing walls should be ADDED.
Remove the sink and tub for renovation but do not get rid of them; clean and reuse them. You won't find a better tub if it is porcelain on cast iron. Not one you can afford. And you should keep it. Add a separate shower in the new area. Put the toilet where the tub was with a cripple wall next to the door and move the tub across to where the toilet was and move the sink over, but don't get rid of anything. Just because you don't use the tub now doesn't mean it will never be used. Clean it up but don't get rid of it. You've got plenty of room for a shower and you can still put a wall of cupboards along the short wall from the new toilet location to the new tub location so you'll still have storage. maybe even a counter.
I'm sorry to see so much beautiful original woodwork painted. I would have stripped and then finished the natural wood. I suspect even though those mantels were painted originally they were finished wood.
If you haven't learned already, read up on shellac. It looks great, easy to repair and you can make your own shellac with some simple, easily purchased materials. It's inexpensive and easy to learn. Best money saving skill ever. Just doesn't hold up well with water so not for the kitchen. But you can revive and refresh some awesome (pre 1930) furniture very easily for pennies if you learn to French polish and make your own shellac. Better to revive the original shellac finish than to paint over it. They used some beautiful woods in vintage furniture you just don't see anymore.

I like how you're focused on finishing the entire upstairs and crossing it off the list.
I, personally, would love to see the front of your house. From the upstairs reading nook, it looks like the unique Gothic style window would be in the front of your home and such a special feature.
I do understand wanting to not reveal your location, I'm sure we all respect that. I don't think anyone would be able to figure out your location just by seeing the front of the house. We only know you're in Canada. Maybe not show the entire front but at least share the window once the outside has been painted and freshened up. Thank you.

Something interesting to consider with windows is that modern windows don't tend to have panes, or at least as many as old historic windows. But removing panes really changes the character of the house's facade. I know paned windows with a historic look are more expensive and not always feasible, and looks aren't everything, but it's worth thinking about for some parts of the house to keep the antique house look.

How very exciting, to think of all the things you're going to get done upstairs! I think personal happiness for 2023 is much more important than ticking projects off your list, and it's been great to keep up with all the projects and plans you've done so far. Here's to a fabulous 2024 that's just as great personally, and maybe has some cool projects to follow along with!

Hi, Ariel! Love your videos + the pod! Just a little tip re: your new bookends--I have the same ones and what I do is hide the vertical part of the bookend inside of the cover of the book it's holding up. They basically become invisible. So cool!

Even without sharing pictures of the front house, I would watch you talk about the process of getting it donw.
What paints you try, how long it takes, and you can just go over that by the river or in any place, and you can show just very close shots of rolling some paint, or of cleaning some bits

So exciting! I recently found your channel from the surprise room behind the sink video and binged the rest of the house videos. Love how you're decorating and remodeling. Reminds me a lot of how my dad would work on the house I grew up in. Can't wait to see more progress!

So this video serves as a reminder to me that I started watching your videos about a year ago as the first video of yours that I watched was either the Updated House Tour Two Years Later or Building the Perfect Reading Nook. Your house looks beautiful. I love all the personality that it has. I love that your videos reflect the realistic pace that people renovate their homes. Keep up the good work!

As you are making plans for the spooky room I don't know if you are considering a master bathroom. If you are consider making a laundry closet and moving the washer and dryer upstairs. Or alternatively in the new bathroom on the mainfloor. Either way getting them out of the kitchen will really help.

the decision about the kitchen is such a good choice. my family decided to get the kitchen done while we were out of the house already, less time without a kitchen and all. But when we got back it was nowhere near close to done, so we had to live w a tiny makeshift kitchen and get takeaway every single day. do you know how much takeaway you need to end up Hating the taste of takeaway?? you dont want to know!
so yeah, i approve of your choice 😅 for you guys' mental health but also your tastebuds

Doug is bringing top-tier cozy vibes. Your owners suite is going to be epic. :) You should measure out the square footage of the tile you need and head to a Habitat for Humanity Restore. My local location usually has tile for cheap.

OMG I’m SUPER excited for the spooky room renovation!!! I honestly figured that would be one of the last things you tackled. So while I’m a tad bit bummed the kitchen is delayed, it makes SO MUCH sense with your reasoning and I’m almost as excited for the spooky room. And since you’re already working on the bathroom I have that to look forward to as well. I can only imagine how gratifying it will feel to have an entire floor of your house done! While I also understand your reasoning for tackling the outside of the house off camera (sadly can’t be too careful) I do hope you at least fill us in verbally with what you accomplish there and any setbacks or surprises you run into. I’m also super curious if you plan on changing the house color. All the rooms are super fun and vibrant, so will you update the outside to be equally as vibrant? Or will you keep the white since it is elegant and classic? Either way seems great but I love hearing your thoughts and logic for how you make the house your home! 😊

I just wanted to chime in that this is all so relatable. We bought a very old house (140+ years old) and the first year we also had to redo parts of the roof which, wow, aren’t roofs expensive and unfun? 😂
So we did a ton of reno during the months leading up to the move in (painting, tearing out old carpet etc) and last year, we were able to ease off work and really started to feel like we lived in the city we moved to and not just like we were house sitting for the old owners. Also, the majority of the work we did was inside and not outside (aside from the roof, which my parents helped with for my birthday).
Anyway, suffice it to say, I have a great appreciation for the work that you’re doing and I will be eagerly watching your videos as I work through my own to do list from over here in Ontario. ❤

This comment is about the upstairs bathroom, you may already decided on final plans, but you can easily switch the tub and sink because of the piping.and with that new little hidden area you showed a pic of a stand up shower with glass doors I think it would fit perfectly in that spot. And the sink you can have a wrap around counter/cabinet along the wall and the small wall under the roof. That mirror should fit on the wall over the sink closest to the door

I have the same mauve chair (s). I’m so over them. I can not find an area rug . My house is a 1924 Tudor cottage. Very small. We’ve been here almost 4 years- bought it as a wreck. My garden is looking wonderful but we still have so much to do. I was over zealous about cottage core and now it’s on my last nerve. I want cleaner , simpler , but still cottage
