I live in San Diego and was walking around my neighborhood about 6 months ago. I saw Bill Walton shuffling along on a walk. His body looked rough, that height and pro ball took a toll on his knees. I was on the phone with my Mom and had never seen Bill in person before. I stopped, asked him if he was Bill (dumb I know), but he flashed that smile, said “yes I am”, i said, “you’re awesome, you always put me in a good mood when I see you on TV, thanks for everything you’ve done” and he said “I’m glad I could a put smile on your face, I hope you have a great day” and he shuffled on. It was so brief as a moment but it was awesome and you could just feel the warmth this guy radiated to everyone around him.
Yup, I saw him here in SD a few times and that positive energy he just always seemed to have. We talked one day for just a moment about how beautiful it is here and how he never got tired of it and that’s why he loved riding his bike around here so much. Such a genuine dude

Moved to SD in 85 courtesy of USN. I first rented in Hillcrest and when the new (at the time) Ralph’s supermarket opened I saw Bill there fairly often. The first time I met him I was truly speechless because he was unmissable. Poor guy’s legs already looked like a road map of scars. Why do folks use the word underrated on UA-cam so darn much . Why are they taking a whole segment to talk about Walton? He won mvps and in the Hall of Fame and one of the all time greats in college also from a marketing standpoint off the court so how is that underrated??

Bill Walton and Marv Albert were the Voice of the NBA from Prime Jordan, Reggie, Kobe and Yes Shaqs championship days. He was a part of my childhood a Big Part. Later learned how dope of a player he was and a Blazer legend cause he was way before my time and I'm a Blazer fan so I had to do my homework. But when Shaq played he would cheer Shaq on as Ernie said "Put it down Big man" or call Shaq out " come on Shaq Don't Brick another one" He was fair and had a brilliant level of basketball iq. I have always wondered why he never coached. And so poetic in his commentary. I remember getting mad at Luke for missing a shot back when he played on the Lakers and yelling damn it why can't u be great like ur dad. Mind u I'm a Blazers fan mad as hell they were losing so bad even Kobe couldn't save them in this game. Sue him and Kobe are sharing great stories. Many before my time have said he was like the next coming of Kareem once Kareem left he was that good. Darn those injuries tht robbed him. Such a great spirit. Rip NW Legend.
Bill Walton I knew him as a commentator growing up. Storied and amazing legend of the game. He will be missed. Charles is right - the world is lesser without that gentle giants smile and happiness he brought to so many people. That email he shared with Ernie is the epitome of Bill.
I think if everybody had one Bill Walton-type of guy in their life whether family or circle of friends, worldwide depression would drop by a significant margin. Beautiful soul of a human.
He played past the ankle-pain and it became knee-pain. He played past the knee-pain and it became back-pain. Nevermind injury impacting his legacy among the greats... He stopped playing and lived the rest of his life in pain...but he would probably never tell? Fair thee well.
Shaq impressed me here. I always liked him but it was nice too appreciate someone’s life. The march of time makes it sad but sweet. That they can all appreciate each other is just awesome to see.
Shaq’s tribute testimony was amazing and stood out from the others. He had to grow up and win to appreciate Big Red, because Walton not only said “leave your legs on the floor,” he did it and won even through his injuries. Remember, in his ‘77 MVP/Championship year against prime Dr. J, he was only in his third season. Big Red would have made Portland a dynasty if he remained uninjured. Their ‘78 season went 50-10, .833, a 68 win season pace before he went down with the stress fractures; they finished just 8-14, .363 the remaining 22 games without him.
I liked hearing Bill's voice doing play-by-plays, it was so soothing and hearing him talk about the game, the nuances, he was so good at explaining things. I learned a lot listening to him. RIP Bill.
@@deanfirnatine7814 RIP to Jones, he was my favorite and you're right, the two of them together were perfect. Bill Walton was a great dude. One of the endearing things I'll remember about him as a broadcaster is how he would just start telling the longest, most off topic story ever, and his co hosts would have to try to delicately reel him back into the game. I remember one game when he kept talking about his trip to China. He also talked a lot about "The Good Rain". It's a book about the Pacific Northwest. From everything I know about him, he lived a wonderful life and seemed to really enjoy the world.
Who gives a shit that was one night. At times Bill played the White Scold. But he was also a quality teammate and brother to all other players. Let's remember his best moments.

Ist watched Big Red as a kid at UCLA. I said who is this guy? Wow what a character, what a great player, what a breath of fresh air and unique insights to his comments not only about basketball but life. RIP BW.
So true Shaq. WILT, KAREEM, RUSSEL, WALTON. THE FOREFATHERS OF THE BIG MAN ALLIANCE. Rip Big Red❤
Im Glad he got 2 Win a championship with the Celtics an i love How the owner dedicated that ECF 2 Bill Walton hopefully he'll be watching over us an help Guide the Celtics 2 banner 18 🏆🍀☘
Bill Walton was truly a mensch in so many ways!
After Shaq's behaviour during jokic mvp announcement its surprising he didnt start insulting bill on this segment
WTF is WRONG with you? Get counseling
Ur comment is dumb would he do that
"Throw it down Big man!!" I always loved Bill Walton's commentary.
I truly Love you Bill . Weeping heart we're going to Miss you!!
Ernie has an incredible way with words
Shaq wanted to make it all about him, but just couldn't. Probably the best tribute I've heard for the red headed giant.
Exactly. Shaq is a coward and egotist.

The NBA will never be the same. Sorry for your loss. My condolences to the incredible athletes that he developed. A character developer.
This was a wonderful tribute. Thank you. It is a shame that Bill passed during a finals that he would have enjoyed. Ernie and team shared their heartfelt thoughts with viewers and it was very moving.
WELL DONE! You guys, Just made me proud and happy to hear your comments! Thank you! Bill thank you for sharing your joy! And Bill had a 36er bike.
Wow. Beautifully done. Thank you.
Shaq is on his way to legend status, he paused (after being mad and upset for a while) but he had the wherewithal to accept and move forward. He has tremendous respect, even though he didn’t agree, with Mr. Walton, that’s how you act. Props to shaq and love and prayers for the Walton family. ❤
I like Shaq for his thoughtful comments. He is a great commentator on the show. I love watching him.
Bill Walton is severely underrated as a player. One of the sad, if not for injuries player. A true national treasure
Why do folks use the word underrated on UA-cam so darn much . Why are they taking a whole segment to talk about Walton? He won mvps and in the Hall of Fame and one of the all time greats in college also from a marketing standpoint off the court so how is that underrated??
God damnit Ernie you got me nearly crying there at the end no joke
Throw It Down Big Guy!! Coming up that was my favorite saying.... RIH to the late great Bill Walton as a Dub Fan keep your head up Luka i know the feeling on losing your dad I lost mines in 2020 and it still hurts!! That Scarface song "I never seen a man cry until I seen a man die" Is a true statement aka true story....
Rip man. Great person
What a great group of personalities the NBA has. It's one thing that makes it so fun to watch and a real force for good in our world. RIP, Bill.
Bill Walton a Bruin legend who left us so many life lessons. Loved his intensity and what he learned from coach Wooden. Thanks guys! Go Bruins! ❤️👊🏼
What a beautiful segment. So glad I watched that! RIP Bill Walton.
Shaq HATED Bill the way he hates Jokic

Kobe would have praised Bill also Luke played with Bryant

Bill Walton, truly ONE OF A KIND. He didn’t try to be anyone else but himself. RIP Legend
thanks for the memories Bill one of the best to play the game, and the game of life you pass on to Reggie and people that had the chance to meet him.R.I.P Bill
Shaq didn’t take advice
Shaq didn’t practice free throws in a dedicated professional way
Bill Walton I knew him as a commentator growing up. Storied and amazing legend of the game. He will be missed. Charles is right - the world is lesser without that gentle giants smile and happiness he brought to so many people. That email he shared with Ernie is the epitome of Bill.
Loved this deserving tribute. RIP the great Bill Walton.
I think if everybody had one Bill Walton-type of guy in their life whether family or circle of friends, worldwide depression would drop by a significant margin. Beautiful soul of a human.
Thanks for the laughs, the knowledge, and the memories, Bill Walton.
Rest in Peace
The world is a better place every single day because the lessons Bill Walton taught to all of us who live on.
Tears lost a one of kind never be another bill
He played past the ankle-pain and it became knee-pain.
He played past the knee-pain and it became back-pain.
Nevermind injury impacting his legacy among the greats...
He stopped playing and lived the rest of his life in pain...but he would probably never tell?
Fair thee well.
Big Bill Walton, we miss you already. Playing Basketball with the past greats now. R I P Brother
I met Bill Walton at a Grateful Dead concert in Hartford Connecticut in the late 80s.
I liked hearing Bill's voice doing play-by-plays, it was so soothing and hearing him talk about the game, the nuances, he was so good at explaining things.
I learned a lot listening to him.
RIP Bill.
He was sooo good with his old Blazer teammate Steve "Snapper" Jones doing games, best hoops announcer duo ever.
And just calling out players. Not out of hate but "c'mon!"
@@deanfirnatine7814 RIP to Jones, he was my favorite and you're right, the two of them together were perfect.
Another favorite that still calls games is Hubie Brown, that dude is a walking wealth of basketball knowledge.
Hubie, Jones and Walton, my 3 favorite play-by-play commentators.
There are tons of videos with Hubie, so good.
@@at1212b lol c'mon, yep classic
Bill Walton was a great dude. One of the endearing things I'll remember about him as a broadcaster is how he would just start telling the longest, most off topic story ever, and his co hosts would have to try to delicately reel him back into the game.
I remember one game when he kept talking about his trip to China. He also talked a lot about "The Good Rain". It's a book about the Pacific Northwest.
From everything I know about him, he lived a wonderful life and seemed to really enjoy the world.
Thanks Ernie for sharing that. I went straight to the kitchen to hug my mom. RIP BW
The joy and spirit he brought to the City of Portland and The State of Oregon is something we will never forget
Beautiful words spoken in tribute to Bill Walton. My sincere condolences to the family and friends. R.I. P. Bill🙏🙏🙏
Bill was actually the announcer in Detroit for the "Malice in the Palace". He was embarrassed to be part of the NBA. Called it "Disgusting"
Who gives a shit that was one night. At times Bill played the White Scold. But he was also a quality teammate and brother to all other players. Let's remember his best moments.
Guess what? It was a disgrace and it was disgusting.
