Keep that rod tip up as high as you can with the big girls hey. The more they have to bend the rod, the harder it is to take line. The rod is like a shock absorber before the drag system. Try it. Set you drag so you can just take line by doing a wrap and pulling it by hand out of the rod without letting it bend at all (straight pull from the tip.) Now angle the rod so it's bent, don't touch the drag and try to take line again. That's actually why it's called angling. True story.
