Easily the the best fella giving 360 tutorials! Super beneficial that you take it slow and go through each window and feature in full description. Even for people that are experienced with complex software fusion can be frustrating and you help to smooth that possibility out very effectively. Love to see a tutorial on like this with a gang lathe set up in mind! thx Lars
Thanks soo much for posting this! I had been using fusion for a while, always messing around with the search function for sample tools. Always adapted them as needed. Today i am finally setting up my own tool library, which i had not bothered to do for weeks! Again, thanks so much.
Lars, thanks a lot for all the tutorials. I am new to CNC but today I finished building mij own CNC table router. Your tuts on Fusion 360 make it possible for me to experiment with CNCmachining. I am an autodesk fan (lots of time I spent on 3ds Max), and fusion is another hit for me I'll follow your tutorials - thanks again
thank you Lars. I will definitely use the template feature. I have recreated the tool info so many times and wondered how this could be done. Thanks again and Keep the great videos coming!
Nice job. I didn't know I was doing it all the hard way until now. it's easy to lose those special tools that you know you made because they only exist in the part file, oops. I know I have made the same corner rounding mill a couple times over. the drag and drop feature was great as well.
Morgan Oliff same here. Been doing it all wrong as well. One question regarding renumbering though, Lars. If I renumber my tools within a project, which I almost always need to do will it update the local library numbers as well or only change the project tool numbers?
That's a great question, Ken. By default, tool will have a zero when created. It is only when it enters the Documents area it get an automatic number. You can specify a tool number on the "Post Processoer" tab when creating the tool. This number will always stick in the tool library, and carry over when picking the tool (bringing it into Documents). Warning...If you "right click" and renumber in the Documents, the tool will loose its original tool number. But I think that is how it should work. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video!! Have a great day!
Very informative video, as always Lars, thank you. Please consider a short follow up to deal with the relationships between flute, shoulder, body, and overall length, and exactly what they mean. Also does overall length include the holder, or just the exposed part of the tool? Whenever I change the flute length to match my cutter, the other lengths change, and don't always make sense to me.
Hi Terry, I have that on my list of future videos. That is not a bad topic...Planning on doing something about cutters soon, so maybe it would fit in. thank you for taking the time to watch! Best, Lars
6061 "Alunimum" I feel this so much Lars, I flipflop syllables around ALL DAY! So grateful for your videos. Thank you for taking your time to make them, I hope you are well compensated for them. Cheers!
Another great one Lars! John S. touched on templates the other day.....I tried it....if he mentioned it, I didn't catch that I had to go in and change the geometry of each of them. I finally got it, but this confirms that I was missing a vital piece of info. Great info on the tool libraries too....learned some new stuff there, too! Thanks!!! So...since I don't have a tool changer and all of my tools are on the bench, it looks like I can have, for example, a "steel" library and an "aluminum" library.....I could populate each with the same tools and tool numbers, but modify each's feeds/speeds.....right? So I could pull the spot drill or chamfer tool up from either, depending on if I wanted aluminum or steel speeds and feeds and not have to edit the tool every time I change material. I can have my chamfer tool as #50 in both local libraries at the same time. Hmmm.....that's going to make tool numbering a lot nicer! :) Obvioiusly, a lot of the end mills won't allow that since I'm not going to run a 3" long 2F HSS on a steel part. But....all the drills will work well that way.....hhhmmm....now that I think about it, doesn't the sample library already have it setup that way? lol I think I'll go look. Thanks! Mike
Hi Mike, Thanks for watching! Yep, that's what I would do. If you keep the libraries true to what you have on the bench, you should be ahead. The worst thing about constant editing feeds, speeds and tool numbers is that you will make a typo at some point and sparks are flying. Have an awesome day!
Hi Lars, Loving these videos! Do you have or are you planning to put a video that shows the fixture/vise and the mill's table like you have in most of your videos? It is definitely great to avoid crashes and so on once on the machine (and it looks super cool!) Cheers!
Hello again. I previously used Sketchup Pro and absolutely love Fusion360. I turned my 14yo daughter onto it as well, that's how easy Fusion is and how much easier your vids make learning. Unsolicited suggestions - 1. Coming in as an absolute beginner, I wish there were a channel or set of vids organized in order under the Title "Beginners Start Here". Might be 5 vids, might be 100 vids. Then maybe have a Channel/Title Moderate, then advanced. I see there are couple/several playlists for beginners so didn't know where to start, so I just dove in and will watch them all. 2. I love order. I absolutely love to click on "Show More" under the video title and check out your suggested links, suggestions, etc as I start the vid. I would love to see an outline of the vid here that captures the times and titles for each section. Example 0:00-1:32 Preamble; 1:33-4:55 Preferences; 4:56-9:30 How to make a new sketch; etc etc. This way if there is something I absolutely know, I can skip ahead and save time. Just some thoughts. Keep up the great work and thank you for making learning Fusion so easy. You are a great teacher!!
I haven't seen this video yet but I watch the beginners tutorial. I admit that the videos that you made are the best 3 videos that I have seen for Fusion 360 so far . Also I wish that you make a playlist for Fusion 360 new users. So it will be easy for us to learn the easier listens in the beginning. Lastly, thank you so much and keep going .
Hi awab attieh Thank you for watching! Check out this absolute beginners playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL40d7srwyc_NopbOnJ4IARIvSrTT1pp5m.html Hope you have an awesome day! BEst, Lars
Hello Lars. I know this is an old video, but we are in Aug 2018, and the Fusion 360 UI, has moved on. I am watching this video, but, as a new person to CAM, I would need to follow the video, almost, frame by frame. Is there a case, where you would update the "setting up a new tool" and setting a toolpath. I have a small cheap CNC, and want to make my practise, and, eventually make an upgrade, later. Over the course of about 18 months, your videos have helped me do my CAD for 3D printing, but CAM is just soooo different, regards, from downunder
Thanks for the lesson Lars. Could you explain what the "shoulder" is as in "shoulder length?" All I've been able to figure out so far is that its length can't be shorter than the flute length.
Hi Lars, very helpfull video, now I know why I was missing my milling tools, they were in the document files. I'm going to build a new tool library in the local library. Thanks again!
Hi Lars.. Sound tips as always. Thanks for these videos. What kind of tool would you create for 3.175*15°*0.2 engraving bits ? Fusion sometimes doesn't like my " personal tools" and then refuses to compute cam paths.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to watch!! I always use the "Chamfer mill" tool for engraving. You can change the tool tip to zero if you like. Let me know if you have any issues with this. Have a great day!
Hi Johan, Thank you for watching the video! There should be a special video on cloud libraries in a short while...That is all I dare to say at this point :-)
Hi Lars, your videos are just great! Could you do a little bit more for woodworkers? For example a small toy (pull duck etc.) from design to cam (with join and animation) and how I can make it multiple times in one go. Is there a possibility within fusion360 for arranging the objects on a large piece of stock with minimal waste of the material? - uuuh, this wishlist got longer the more I thought about it - sounds more like a new series ;-)
Would you by chance know how to copy and paste a Fusion tool library into Excel? I am trying to make a wall chart of the tool libraries to hang up by our machines. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Subscribed! Can I draw my own inserts? I need a YNMG which is not selectable in the lathe toolbits. It is similar to a VNMG, but with a 25degree "nose".
Thank you, Lars, one question could you explain the offsets on the last tab when making a new tool. I'm confused on the difference of if the cam is doing the offset or the controller for the tool width. ive just bought a Tormach 1100 with ATC and am getting ready to cut my first part but I'm not sure how to do the tool offset settings, im guessing most people let the cam do the with offset and the controller does the length? So would i just set my dia offset in the controller to 0 and set up the Z offset and then check the box for fusion to do the cutter comp? and then use the offset in the controller for wear comp if needed?
First I have to say, On some machines, you are locked in and can only do one thing. But, for most people, it is totally a preference. Personally, I have always used Wear whenever I could....But first: In computer: Whatever tool diameter/2 you use in the program will be added to the nominal path of the cut . In Control: Your posted code will only be the nominal path and you will have to add the tool diameter/2 in the control Wear: Whatever tool diameter/2 you use in the program will be added to the nominal path of the cut (Like In computer) but it also adds G41 and G42 to the code so now you can adjust for tool wear in the control. Reason is that a cutter will normally be a little under size and you will also see that the edge will break, so when you measure your part after milling you might find you have to make a small adjustment...like 0.003 or something small. By using the wear option, you can make that 0.003 adjust right at the control and run the same program. You should read you machine manual and double check what it specify and I would also recommend that you do some test cuts. Hope this is helpful
Very thank you, I've got it figured out I'm letting Fusion do the offset and I'm leaving the controller dia to 0, I only need to add this if I use conversational or want a wear adjustment. Is there a way to make fusion use rest machining in 2d. I would like to do a 1/2inch adaptive then a 1/4inch adaptive but the 1/4 in is redoing all of the stock. In 3d tool paths, i see rest machining options but not in 2d. Thank you
Lars, great advise as always! We are about to set up a Haas TM1P with 10 tool holder like the minimil you mention used for internal manufacturing. As a manufacturer that needs to run machines at 5% capacity, I would love your thoughts on how to pick very few very flexible tools for "the dumb machinist" We need long reach tools for 8mm X 75mm and long reach 2-3mm but essentially how do you pick 9 tools for Alu/Plastic and 9 tools for Stainless when you are very willing to sacrifice speed? Is Fusion suitable for designing parts from machining and out? Most here focusses on what to do when the designer/engineer has designed a part that is next to impossible to manufacture. How do we turn it upside down?
Two things comes to mind. Do you have the right flute length specified, and do you have the right stock? That is normally where I mess up. Hope this is helpful
Super random question, is that a "RUN DNS" shirt from BH17/DC24? Thanks for the videos though, great for beginners like me who are slightly in over our heads sometimes.
Hi Eric. it is a "RUN CNC" shirt from these guys fifthaxis.com/new.fifthaxis.com/wordpress/ Picked it up at IMTS last year. Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos! Have an awesome day!
Thanks for the great videos, but how can I configure the tool table to work with a setup that doesn't use preset tools/ tool holders? Im learning and Im using fusion 360 with linux cnc and I would like to use Dremel bits for now with an 1/8 in collet. just trying to get around having to dump a bunch of money on holders while I'm still learning the basic principles.
Hi Douglas, thank you for taking the time to watch the videos! You can create your own tool in the tool library. That way you can totally control if there is tool holder or not. I would still think you want to specific some kind of tool holder as you Dremel bit...You could just use one common holder. Test it out :-)
Thanks Lars for your reply,I've come to the conclusion I will just buy a few tool holders and endmills for roughing and then run a separate program just for finishing with a collet. Thanks for all the informative videos!
Hi Lars, I plugged all my tools into the library - worked fine, but I can´t find a category for my engraving tools. How do I add them to the collection? I have some gravers for making v-cuts in order to bend plastic and cobond materials. But I also like to make signs...I tried chamfer mills, but they look quite different, they are tiny - approx. 2 millimeters and have only different cutting angles between 30 and 92 degrees.
I would think the chamfer mill should work if you set tip diameter to zero and adjust Diameter and Shaft Diameter? Could you share a link to a picture of one?
I really enjoy your videos but one thing I would like to mention. I don't know if this is true for other people or just me but you have the one computer screen that shows your voice level when you are recording. That is kind of distracting to me. I have a tough time concentrating as it is but I find myself watching the voice power bar almost as much as I watch you and I loose what you are saying. Right now we have a new water jet at work and I am concentrating on trying to use Fusion 360 for parts and I have as yet to find the video that goes thru setting up to run the simulation on Fusion. Do you have a video out yet for doing that? I would appreciate one that goes from start to finish. Design a small part all the way to the simulation. Thanks for all you do for us Lars. Pat
Hello Lars, great channel & very informative.... Quick question: I continue to get error messages that state I "probably need to choose a different tool"... I'm simply engraving 1/8" high single line text @ .003" deep & my tool is a 3/64" ball end mill... My particular tool is not listed in the library, but even after creating a new one that "closely" matches my tool specs, I continue to get the same error message... I don't believe it's because the text is too small... Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Any help on adding endmills not sure what body length and shoulder length is and keep getting red highlight on what i use ,ive watched video many times but adding the specs is were i fall short
Lars, great video. In my tool library, on the top bar I don’t have any import features. Only “operation, type, dimensions and search”. Any help with this?
Hi D C Thank you for watching! Yes, the development team decided to move things around. Go and right-click on a tool library on the left side and you should see the import option. Best, Lars
Hello, thanks for all the great videos! I just re-watched this video and I noticed that you said you were going to be posting a video on "Feeds and Speeds", did you? Thanks again.
Hi TheSTABLAB Thank you for watching! I did not. But, my friend, John Saunders from NYC CNC has covered this very well: ua-cam.com/video/uw8uL2jjEBs/v-deo.html
How does the tool number work ona machine with a dynamic tool position system that used names not number? My Siemens 810d controller on a machine with a twin gripper tool change arm and vertical tool magazine changes the pocket number of a tool everytime is does a tool change. I can have 200 named tools programmed into the machine and up to 24 tools loaded into the magazine.
Hello Lars, about the toollibrary, i mis in the left upper corner the funtions inport export, duplicate, and new library. how do i get that on mine screen. i cant see the options
Hi Rene Roon Thank you for watching! Yes, the development team did some clean-up.......Right click on your library in the left dialog box. Make sure you are using one of your own libraries as they added some intelligence. Like, you can export a sample library, but not import into it. Hope this helps
How do i add sample tools to my personal library, but limit the RPM to 5000 and feeds acordingly? And also renumber tools in parts, but keep 2 or 3 tools numbers from library, becouse they are always on that fixed positions, like spot drill, chamfer, and taster
Everytime I enter my plasma cutter tool, the picture shows a milling tool. Then when I do a simulation, it shows a milling router type cut. Ive tried uninstalling the plasma cutting tool several times and re entering it. Same thing happens. I have picked the plasma cutting tool, never a router tool. What gives?
A follow up: Is there a tool library available to download for smaller size ball end mills? That's the reason I had to make one up from scratch... could not find one to match my 3/64" tool... Please advise.
Hi Lars, well, I don't think that is the correct video you linked... I didn't see anything that dealt with adding a ball end mill that is not in the tool library, or downloading a file that includes the smaller tools... or am I missing something? Thanks!
I can't quite see how to enter and save the flat end bit I have in my hand, measuring it, glad to give it a name. I have described its dimensions in every detail five times, being unable to save these entries, but I need to, because these disappear when I need once again to create a tool path, following every edit.
Hi Paul Mcnulty Thank you for watching! Sorry, that is frustrating! I would recommend that you go here: forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-computer-aided/bd-p/2070
I am nose down to the trail, following eagerly. Thank you so much! Step by step intro course seems promising, tomorrow's first day with tutor found via upwork.com promises still more. Brick wall, apply forehead, repeat.
Hi Lars:I noticed that the tool library in your video shows the specifications for each American Standard tool in American Standard dimensions. The tool library that came with my downloaded version of Fusion 360 only shows the tool diameter in American Standard - All the other dimensions ( tool length, shaft diameter, etc.) for the tool is listed in Metric format. What's up with that!!??
Make sure you have your units set to standard for the file you have open when you open the tool library. That will change the output. Hope this is helpful. Best, Lars
Hi Lars, I found that if you pick all tools only from the Local library, that this results in duplicate tools in the document library with each tool having only one operation linked to it. This causes the post processor to force a tool change for each operation whether you use the same tool in the next operation or not. They way around it seems to be to select the first tool from the Local Library and then for subsequent operations, first check if the tool is already used in the document library and if so then select it from there (and not from the Local Library). Fusion 360 does not seem to be able to recognize duplicate tools in the document library. Or did I miss something?
I think that is working as intended. You may want duplicated tools, for instance using a tool for roughing and then you also want to use an identical tool for finishing. I think the desired workflow is as you explained... choose from the document library to have only one of that tool in your operation.
hi Lars .. thanks for the video .. its really useful for me ... could u please provide me the .f3d file that you have used in the video .. it would be really helpful to show our customers like collision detection , etc .. i am an application engineer working at one of your partner centers
+Lars Christensen can i get your mail ID .. recently we got an opportunity to benchmark fusion 360 cam for 2 axis and 3 axis at our customer site .. probably by tomorrow we will start the benchmark work .. i will surely need your guidance during the benchmark .. it would be helpful if you could share me your mail id
Aadithya, I try to answer as many emails as I can after work hours. Bur,I can't help much in regards customer benchmarks on site. You probably want to use your contacts at your local Autodesk. Thank you
is there a way to import a tool holder that is from a manufacturers web site? when using setup sheets my team wants pictures and descriptions that are accurate representations. I must be missing something?
Hi im new to fusion 360 and cnc in general. Can somebody please point me in the right direction for a video on how to cut all the way through wood like i was making a stool or something. I am only learning engraving at the moment but want to learn how to do multiple passes to go all the way through and im not even sure where in cam i go. Im guessing its not engrave.lol a for beginners guide please. Haha thanks in advance and this is a great vid to help sort the library
Hi Natasha Balderston Thank you for watching! Take a look at how to machine around the outside of this part: ua-cam.com/video/Bd6-BQUCbVA/v-deo.html Hope this is helpful
can i share a local tool library with some one els. my brother and I run a makerspace in Cape town. we have a cnc router that difrent people use. it would be useful of every one can have the availabil tools for the machine.
Hello. I'm fairly new to Fusion 360 and brand new to CNC in general. I'm needing to set up a hotwire tool in Fusion 360. Which tool would you recommend starting with? It looks like Fusion 360 does not have this as a tool option but I would like to try to make a custom tool for my hot wire. Thanks!
Hi Dezeray Stenzel Thank you for watching! Is this like a hotwire CNC? I would think that the 2D cutting, like a laser would work: ua-cam.com/video/1x7WwHGby3M/v-deo.html

Personally, I have always used Wear whenever I could....But first:
In computer: Whatever tool diameter/2 you use in the program will be added to the nominal path of the cut .
In Control: Your posted code will only be the nominal path and you will have to add the tool diameter/2 in the control
Wear: Whatever tool diameter/2 you use in the program will be added to the nominal path of the cut (Like In computer) but it also adds G41 and G42 to the code so now you can adjust for tool wear in the control.
Perfect, exactly what I was looking for.
Hello Lars. Thanks your explanations. But I wonder that is it possible to import CAD data of one of the vendor's toolholder into the Fusion 360 ?
great videos iam useing a 1/4 in end flat mill and iam still getting collitions trying to pocket a guitar pickup cavity
Two things comes to mind. Do you have the right flute length specified, and do you have the right stock? That is normally where I mess up.
Hope this is helpful
thanks for the replay i.ll check
Great in depth video..Thank you Lars.
Another nice video! I am wondering why do you store your tools in the Local folder as opposed to the Cloud folder?
because the cloud is sssllllloooooooooowwwwwwwww
There should be a special video on cloud libraries in a short while...That is all I dare to say at this point :-)
Hmmm, I don't find the cloud to be slow at all.
Sounds good Lars. Thanks
One of my best teacher ever
You are so Great Lars!!!
There will be some updates to tooling soon in Fusion, so I will be doing some videos on the tool library soon :-)
Wow, that was great Lars!
Thanks for the Video. Following you from now on!
Thank you!
Best,
Lars
Hello, thanks for all the great videos! I just re-watched this video and I noticed that you said you were going to be posting a video on "Feeds and Speeds", did you? Thanks again.
Hi TheSTABLAB Thank you for watching!
I did not. But, my friend, John Saunders from NYC CNC has covered this very well:
ua-cam.com/video/uw8uL2jjEBs/v-deo.html
Awesome Lars!!!!! Really informative. Thanks!
Thank you!!
Have a great day!
Fantastic Job Lars!!!!
Thank you Wayne!
Hi Lars, Yes i have found it yesterday already, but thanks, great you tube's from you. i learne more and more
How do i add sample tools to my personal library, but limit the RPM to 5000 and feeds acordingly? And also renumber tools in parts, but keep 2 or 3 tools numbers from library, becouse they are always on that fixed positions, like spot drill, chamfer, and taster
Xls import of tool libraries? Ant way to do that or perhaps, convert an xls to some other palatable format?
I am new to Fusion 360. How do you create a Keyhole bit for the Tool Library.
Hi PTG Gunsmithing Thank you for watching!
Check out this video around the 16 minute mark:
ua-cam.com/video/lZ-AQ42AGTk/v-deo.html
Hope this is useful
Hi Lars, well, I don't think that is the correct video you linked... I didn't see anything that dealt with adding a ball end mill that is not in the tool library, or downloading a file that includes the smaller tools... or am I missing something? Thanks!
Great video! Thanks Lars!
Thank you for watching!
Have an awesome day!
Howdy Lars, Very helpful, Thanks.....BTW can u say "Aluminum 10 times really fast" (lol) Again, Merry Christmas
lol, Nope I can't :-)...Merry Christmas and happy New Year Richard.
I would recommend that you go here:

Best,
Lars
I have a problem that to perform drill.i can't find any tools list after selecting the feature.
You just slashed it man! Like the video!
Thank you Shy The Photoguy
Thank you
hi Lars .. thanks for the video .. its really useful for me ... could u please provide me the .f3d file that you have used in the video .. it would be really helpful to show our customers like collision detection , etc ..
i am an application engineer working at one of your partner centers
Glad you liked the video! Shoot me an email and I"ll invite you to the project! lars@cadcamstuff.com
Perfect sir .. I will send you a mail from my official mail ID
+Lars Christensen
can i send you the request mail to Lars@cadcamstuff.com
Aadithya, I try to answer as many emails as I can after work hours. Bur,I can't help much in regards customer benchmarks on site. You probably want to use your contacts at your local Autodesk. Thank you
Lars, im a woodworker. I'm trying to load a 60 degree bit tool. Do you have any suggestions?
You should be able to copy and modify an existing tool.
good stuff Lars
Thank you Daniel!
is there a way to import a tool holder that is from a manufacturers web site? when using setup sheets my team wants pictures and descriptions that are accurate representations. I must be missing something?
I don’t believe that is an option at this point
@@cadcamstuff thank you.
Take a look at how to machine around the outside of this part:
ua-cam.com/video/Bd6-BQUCbVA/v-deo.html
Hope this is helpful
can i share a local tool library with some one els. my brother and I run a makerspace in Cape town. we have a cnc router that difrent people use. it would be useful of every one can have the availabil tools for the machine.
Can you apply 20,000 RPM to a tool in the library if you are cutting on wood?
Hi Jacob Trolo Thank you for watching!
Yes, you can for sure cut wood. There are not limit for the rpm.
BEst,
Lars
Where did the design of these clamps come from?
It is a standard milling clamping set. This type of clamps have been around longer than I have been around machine shops
BEst,
Lars
Lars Christensen I was talking about the CAD representations for use in Fusion360 . Not the physical clamps.
also how do i get the free CNC handbook
Check out this link cadcamstuff.com/download-free-stuff/
I just downloaded it by clicking on the link provided with the comments made by Lars.
The book will seriously help me during my benchmark ... thankyou so much for the link @ Lars
Good vid
I would think that the 2D cutting, like a laser would work:
ua-cam.com/video/1x7WwHGby3M/v-deo.html
The CNC has both functions in one, a CNC and a hotwire. Thanks for the reply! I will look into the 2D cutting laser.
Can you do g41 or g42 in fusion 360?
Yes, Go to for example the Countor toolpath and you will see the option on the passes tab.(4th. tab)
How to use more than tools in one mould making?
Hi Rahul Kakade Thank you for watching!
Not sure I totally understand your questions.
How to us the cloud?
There should be a special video on cloud libraries in a short while...That is all I dare to say at this point :-)
Thank you for watching the video!
You need a better mic ...
