It probably took the author a couple chapters to realize what he wanted to do with Yuichi, and he does seem completely clueless about everything during the first Game, but after that he becomes a supremely intelligent character. Take the Gambling arc for instance- It starts off looking like he just got his behind kicked at poker, but by the end of the arc it's revealed that literally everything went according to his plan. His battle against Kamishiro is insane in its own right, but the fact that that whole intense Game Was just a small part of his overall plan to make sure all the other characters got the exact amount of money he was predicting makes it even more crazy. Even in the Island arc, which is a game literally designed to make sure that not every character has all the information. He still walks into a barn and basically dissects the whole situation with the black bullets on a Sherlock style level. The only things that I find kind of bizarre is that he sometimes just gets lucky. And yeah, I know that obviously that's realistic technically, because you can't always have the enemy characters get all the luck and the good characters get none, but that is sometimes what happens. And ultimately, that's usually what makes the best writing- If you want to make a character look as amazingly. Persistent as possible, you need to consistently put them in the worst possible scenario. I remember when I was reading Bid Poker in Liar Game, and I remember being so sucked into the story that I just genuinely wanted to see everything go right for once, before quickly remembering that the whole point of the story is to keep the characters distrusting each other for as long as possible until the very end. But even then, Yuichi doesn't get that lucky most of the time. The only times that it really happens is when he just happens to come across Tenji on the island when he needed to meet him the most, and how he and Kei just happened to find the Keys during the Prison arc, which in all honesty I think is my least favorite arc of the whole manga.

I like yuuichi and TG as i already said, but what i mean is characters like: baku, souichi, lalo, akiyama, yokoya, akagi, tokuchi, dr.frost, dr. Moon, l, light, koji, lelouch, bbc sherlock, novels sherlock, hannibel lecter, novels poirot, miss maple, william james moriarty, patrick jane, red john etc..are smarter than him. You also gotta remember that these characters i mentioned and more that other people can add were also hard to write. Ngnl is horrible imo and the only thing it has going for it is intellect of characters which is also lazely written. I remember when I was reading Bid Poker in Liar Game, and I remember being so sucked into the story that I just genuinely wanted to see everything go right for once, before quickly remembering that the whole point of the story is to keep the characters distrusting each other for as long as possible until the very end.
But even then, Yuichi doesn't get that lucky most of the time. The only times that it really happens is when he just happens to come across Tenji on the island when he needed to meet him the most, and how he and Kei just happened to find the Keys during the Prison arc, which in all honesty I think is my least favorite arc of the whole manga.

Moon, l, light, koji, lelouch, bbc sherlock, novels sherlock, hannibel lecter, novels poirot, miss maple, william james moriarty, patrick jane, red john etc..are smarter than him. You also gotta remember that these characters i mentioned and more that other people can add were also hard to write. While not all of them are flawlessly written and they have plot holes, contrivances etc.. in their actions, the specific writers for their characters also probably had a hard time trying to come up with this ,,genius that would shock the audience with their intellect". I totally understand you though.
@@carealoo744 also yes, those feats are impressive, but comparing it to: fighting the world whos against you and outsmarting the best detective who is also smart at age 17-23, with no prior experience or wealth (light), anticipating, rigging, planning your verse and outsmarting, outtricking, outmanipulating a superhuman who reads your mind (baku), almost killing baku a few times and outsmarting him a few times as well (lalo), giving baku the hardest time hes ever had and forcing him to his limit (pm souichi), beating the liar game from a very disadvantageous position against someone like yokoya (akiyama), becoming a super detective at at young age and solving around 3,500 perfect murders and fighting against supernatural (l) , solving the red john case which was practically perfect (patrick jane) etc.. is more impressive.
