  • Both Catholic and Islamic thought draw from a common Ancient Philosophical tradition, interpreted during the Middle Ages. The Common Heritage Series is part of a new partnership between Zaytuna College and the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology which brings faculty and students together in exploration of this shared heritage. Renovatio, a co-sponsor of these events, published "Medina and Athena: Restoring a Lost Legacy" by Hamza Yusuf in its Spring 2019 issue.

    What he said about Arabic and grammar is true. I have noticed when Chinese try to learn English, they carry a dictionary and obsessed with vocabulary. On the other hand when arabs try to learn English they’re obsessed with English grammar.

    • @zenastronomy
      @zenastronomy 5 місяців тому

      did he say that in the lecture or something you noticed?
      I guess it makes sense. Chinese being a pictorial language with thousands of individual words needing to be memorised.
      whilst Arabic being a derivative language where grammar can be used to understand and derive the words.
      and English being something in the middle due to hodge podge of other old languages.

    I've been an ardent admirer of Shaikh Hamza and have greatly benefited from his lectures. May Allah increase his knowledge.
    But I am perplexed at what I heard in this lecture, where he was seen praising the Hindu Varna system also called the jaati system (Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra). In this system, the first 3 are said to be the superior and the last one as highly inferior. Over centuries, the higher classes have oppressed the Shudras and continue to do it till day. Shudras have been never allowed to live in common residential areas where people of the other 3 castes live. They have been deprived of education and claiming an equal social status. They are not allowed in temples. The Universities in the US have begun the recognise caste based discrimination on Campuses.
    Also, when Islam came to the Sub-continent, the Shudras, seeing the equality of Islam, converted in hordes. In fact, it is said that over 80% of Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) are Hindu converts. Of which over 90% are Hindu Shudras.
    Shaikh Hamza seems to consider the Varna System as a good Social order, when there's clear historical evidence that this system has single-handedly oppressed and discriminated billions of lives over several centuries and continues to, unabated.
    I hope Shaikh Hamza reflects on his understanding of the Hindu Varna System.

      Nida Hashmi I’m from south India and Muslims were here since the days of our prophet. The oldest mosque in the subcontinent is in Kerala. That mosque was built during the lifetime of our prophet. And Mohammad Bin Qassim was sent to India by the ummayads because a local ruler in India had harassed some local Muslims in the region. So Muslims were there before.

      The Prophet (saw) said, “Seek knowledge, even if it be in China." What do you think that this means? Do you imagine that a man who has sat at the feet of renowned scholars such as Shaykh Murabit Al Hajj isn't aware of and affirmatory of Tawhid? In this world where utter ignorance and materialistic indulgence are jointly celebrated, shall we decry the intellectual roots upon which the Muslims built. I do not find it in the least bit odd that those who start by arguing for what they think of as pristine Islam unsullied by interaction with any other intellectual traditions are the same people who in the end bring us a holy city filled with Mcdonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Materialism is the bedfellow/kindred spirit of protestantism. And protestantism is not just a phenomenon in the Western churches.

      @@AbuLaith1963 First this hadith is weak. Second, being rich =/= being materialistic. Many Sahabah were rich such as Uthman ibn Affan and Abdualrahman ibn Awuf.
