    I am from Ralston’s district. The corruption was real. He did things as a lawyer that would’ve gotten anyone else disbarred. Both parties loved him so much because he most certainly granted them back room political favors to get things passed as speaker. His opposition always magically went away after a private meeting. The funny part was when he died, they fought like cats and dogs over who was his friend the hardest; trying to claim his endorsement from the grave. His widow ended up running to fill his seat merely by removing the ‘David’ from the campaign materials and just using ‘Ralston’. They all lost. Now his good ol’ boys left in the senate are trying to run things like he did. They need to be removed as well.

    • @dereksaxon6033
      @dereksaxon6033 13 днів тому +16

      @ Yeah I can think of a few right away, but policy arguments are always highly subjective. I’ll still take the bait though and give one less divisive example. The bill they advertised as “eliminating the birthday tax” on vehicle registration, but it was really about eliminating the perceived tax advantage of private vehicle sellers. It was heavily lobbied by dealerships. Now we pay the tag fee plus the birthday tax, or whatever the state says the value of the used vehicle is upfront.
      My original comment was more directed towards how he got his bills passed, and personally seeing him on the town dining with dignitaries while the local restaurants rolled out the red carpet for him. It became known that if you needed your legal proceedings delayed indefinitely, he was your go to lawyer.

The people who defend them while knowing full well what sort of reprehensible and morally dubious shenanigans they got up to are probably just as bad, because if they aren't bothered by stuff like what their buddy did, what sorts of things are they getting up to themselves? @@Celestial_Reach As others have stated, good luck finding reported instances of corruption... its the Good Ol' Boy state. But I live on the border of SC/GA, and work in an industry populated with many lawyers, diplomats and politicians. As anecdotal as that may be, what they have said absolutely checks with what I know about the state, what others from that state have said online and even in these threads, and what many people already know. The Deep South, and especially Georgia, never really recovered from the Dixie-Crat menace. They saw which way the wind turned, turned with it, and the old families that owned the land, the plantations, and the government consolidated their power again. I know I don't have citations with me, but just look into what others are saying... This guy was known to be the lawyer to hire if you needed litigation to be buried indefinitely until the case was dropped due to lack of money. That's corruption in its own way, using money, time, and knowledge of procedure to out-last citizens ability to pay to defend their rights in court.

    "Journalists found that over the course of 21 cases, Ralston requested delays 57 times, and that on 76 of the 93 conflicting days, the legislature was not in session; he would commonly delay individual cases over a dozen times each. Charges against Ralston's clients who benefited from this include drunk driving, child molestation, and assault."
    This was just one of many reported issues with Ralston, it was also reported that he used his political power to benefit his law firm by claiming scheduling conflicts thus allowing him to delay court cases repeatedly while his clients walked free on bond for years, he would do this until evidence would expire. For this specific reason people would seek to retain him; you could molest children free of penalty so long as you had Ralston on retainer.
    The fact that so many members support him in spite of this is disturbing. It really seems like local/state governments are rampant with corruption like this and lack the same legal and journalistic scrutiny that the federal government is held to.
