I went to watch it and it is so funny and real, I’m latina and filipino families are so a like that is almost like watching a movie of my family, love it ❤️💕
With everything going on in the world today, a movie like Easter Sunday is perfect! Steven Spielberg will agree.
I feel like this is a Filipino version of Friday. No one scrutinized Friday and Ice Cube.
It’s over the top and full of stereotypes….and guess what…. That’s perfectly ok.
It’s not supposed to be Oscar worthy.
The best part of the movie when the gang came to the house pay attention to idol Jesus and everyone has the same password. It was hilarious
😂😂
Sounds like it could have been a sitcom series on Netflix or Prime! I use to live in Daly City , I know that culture, cool that it gets in a movie.
A sitcom, indeed!!!!
tha cousin character is realy on the spot ...this happens mostly in flipino families ... the most loved is the more abusive
This movie sounds really funny… ridiculous can be fun… if it’s funny it works… I’m for sure gonna watch. Another great review .
That cousin characterisation is a Filipino trait I have read somewhere. In every family there is one chaotic and reckless member or a trouble maker but respect and love elders a lot. He/she becomes a mom or grandma’s favourite. I think it’s in Filipino Psychology.
No! It’s freakin’ Filipino Jedi Mind Tricks I tell ya’! I survived it all. 🤣💯😎
Very Filipino cousin, reckless with someone else’s money and they think their sweetness will cover for their shortcomings
@@alyccaeve no, that's a very HUMAN trait. My two ex-girlfriends were all of that and worse. Reckless with the money I made and provided and never made up for it. They weren't Filipino. LOL
I should say that can be common trait in majority Asian family. He/she would be spoiled by elders, so they always ask siblings or cousins to deal with the mess.
I kind of like little funny movies like this. I would definitely watch this on a day when I need a wholesome laugh.
Should I have said first??🤣
Finally caught this one tonight bc I love jo koy. Movie wasn’t that great but I’m glad I saw it. Thanks for reviewing it
You telling the story is already making me laugh! 🤣
Steven Spielberg did this movie to burn millions! Seriously? That's truly laughable! Behind the laughter is a resounding message of endearing values well embedded within a culture. Western movies have largely depicted Asians in a very condescending manner, especially among those who rely on movies to understand world civilization. Spielberg GETS IT! This movie is an attempt to break these stereotypes and see other peoples of the world as less menacing. I hope Spielberg does other movies to showcase other cultures. Comedy is a brilliant medium to bridge the cultural divide.
EXACTLY!!
I love Jo Koy ❤️
Proud Filipino here and just subscribed 🤗
You gave a very kind review. Thanks for your perspective!
I need a silly, ridiculous comedy and a good laugh. Going to definitely seek this out. Great review!
You guys are cool, I feel like we’d be IRL friends! New fan of the channel.
Sounds pretty light-hearted fare? A dysfunctional Asian family, spotlight on Filipinos with 'typical' idiosyncrasies? But, this may be like, what Nick says: "feels like it's behind the times, a little bit" - and purposely for "older" viewers? As usual, an informative review! :)
The girl you mentioned who looked like Regina Hall is Eva Noblezada, who played Kim in the most recent Miss Saigon Musical. She's an award-winning actress and a great singer.
She was the voice of Sam in Luck which I thought was a super cute cartoon.
Agreed. Big Jo Koy fan but your review sums it up. There were good moments but overall, it needed refinement. Loved Tiffany and Lou Diamond, the rest was familiar to Jo Koy's fans who have seen his standups. Jo Koy was good for being his first film, but he comes across as deer in headlights. He needs more experience, hopefully he'll get it. For example, Adam Sandler is pro. He knows how to put out a great product. Perhaps better script and comedic directing might make a difference. Still, good movie to see.
There's no movie in the world that everybody likes. Even the blockbuster movies, there will always be people saying how bad it is or ugly it is. That's fine because there will also be other people saying that it was good. At the end of the day, it's all about RESPECT. Respect the hard work that was put into Easter Sunday and respect the culture that is different than you and we're all good.
I liked this film too. Not a masterpiece, but light hearted fun and a good time at the movies.
You guys compare this to Medea. My first thought was a Philapino version of Friday. All this craziness happening in one day.
I was gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jumpoff Hey 👋🏽 Boos, BTW, this new music is giving me all the good vibes of my childhood.
that's hi first movie chill guys
When even Filipino actors or celebs arent or havent presented their culture fully even with a sizable population among Asians in the US, then I suppose this film is an intro to Filipino culture in America and that is why it feels dated. Before this, the only celeb I know is Manny Pacquiao introducing Filipino culture to the world.
Thats true filipino traits. And we love classic epic movie. Thats it.
Joseph is gorgeous
I enjoyed the movie and I laughed a lot during the movie. Hope they will make a sitcom about Jo Koy's life and family. The movie as is was very funny. All the character and story plots does happen in a family. Filipinos would understand the movie better because they understand the context and setting, like all the family characters, aunties, uncles, cousins, borrowing monies, long-grudges between relatives, guilt tripping by mothers and children... all of this happen in a family especially for Filipino families because we do live close and are interested in each others lives. For American audiences, you will not understand the "cousin" but I totally do, if its not a cousin, a sibling or another member of the clan will be doing these things. Anyway, you need to live among Filipinos in order to make sense of all the Filipino sensibilities. Anyway it is a movie, not a cultural documentary.
I do too there's so much still to explain of Filipino culture so many avenues to play out
There was supposed to be a sitcom Koy was going to write, produce and star in called Josep but it was scrapped.
maybe if JoKoy wrote and directed also...
It's based on Joko's comedy shows I think.
As a Filipino, this is everything you want to avoid. There are funnier mainstream comedies from the Philippines that don't border on the self-depreciating minstrelsy of our stereotypes from diasporic people.
Thanks I always wonder how various cultures feel with overblown stereotypes in comedies. I see the the universal cross-cultural appeal of "that's the same in OUR family" too...but sometimes the imagery is SOOOOO stupid there's the background thought of " OMG, people really don't think this is TRUE, right?"... The problem is when some (mainly racists) cannot differentiate between the difference.
Yeah this movie sucked
Are you really a Pinoy?
I think you are overreacting, im a pure Filipino and in fact still lives here.
Yea the movie might be too shallow and a little over the place but it doesn't change the fact, that this movie has a historical significance to our brothersandsisters that are living in America. This is the first one and hopefully not the last but just the start of something even greater.
Just because it isa little underwhelming ,you will not be proud of it anymore, just offer some constructive criticism instead of tearing it down.
It took this long for these guys or for any Pinoy to have our own movie be produced in Hollywood.
We can only go forward from here, the important part is that someone opened the door already.
At least these people are doing something for our brethren, what have you done for this culture? Don't be a Karen.
Spoiler we haven’t watch it yet here in the Philippine!!!!
Your review is more fair… other one review was so racist just awful …
The movie is his life and everything in the movie and little adaptation true filipino life. Many of us surely similar to it we get it and i laugh a lot because I understand why? your not filipino will not find funny.
Filipino humor is different from American humor. What is funny to Filipinos are not funny to Americans and vice versa.
My comment on another review: Just another "The Debut" or "Fabulous Filipino Brothers" which is not saying much. Total cheese. Recycled Troupes. The criminal subplot in the film was so unnecessary. Try to tell us you're Filipino without telling us you're Filipino. The subtleness would help. I'm Filipino, so I support any Filipino being able to put a film out on the big screen, that is difficult in itself and is commendable. Hopefully this is a stepping stone for other Filipino creatives to produce original story telling/Grittier/Artful features in Hollywood such as say "Atlanta" or "Ramy" Sidenote: Best Filipino flicks to check out, "Metro Manila" "On the Job." Enough with the dysfunctional Filipino movies, NONE are good, they are tired, none have been done well!
They should make a Filipino film on some Filipino American opening a restaurant that makes home style traditional Filipino food similar to the film Chef years ago that focused on Cuban food.
Good way to showcase Filipino/ Filipino American culture without being cringey and with a cool concept.
@@ryanbeltran9413 That would be dope. My ass would also gain another 15 lbs from the mouthwatering dishes. Nothing more satisfying than the prep of food. Speaking of......"The Bear" on Hulu is another great scope into the restaurant industry
On the job is a hot mess I love Metro Manila though!
@@emcap I can see how On the Job could be a hot mess, but it's a lot better than most suspense cinemas in Philippine cinema unfortunately lol.
Its a true story of Jokoy that just adopted to a movie... pilot plot for tv show is true ABC turned it down, the alcohol advertisement is true he and his mom, also in our family tradition like religion holiday after attending church normally have huge family dinner, the plot disagreement between sisters so true too.
The script is not good. The drama is supposed to be all Filipino cast, but actually diverse, it was supposed to represent the Filipino culture only, Jo koy is a mix race, he is a good comedian, but not Filipino Asian enough 100% to even represent the whole Filipino Community, lacking of spontaneous jokes..The food was good but did not show that much, missing the Lechon is more valued by Filipinos on all occasion, it is more represented to the Filipino American audience not for immigrants or newly arrival although the first Filipino was in the U.S. back in the 1700s, 1800,s, and the 1920's, 1930's including my Father was a scholar student sent from the Philippines back in the 1930's...The
Filipino Movie "The Debut" was an Amazing movie.
Please listen to me… I am a fellow film enthusiast. There was nothing redeeming about this movie. It was absolutely cringe from start to finish. Avoid this movie like the plague… Trust me.
I beg to disagree.
@@SunShine_sublime Dude, please tell me what you saw in this?? Because I was actually cringing trying to get through this movie 🥲
Just saw it today…I want to start a discussion with you about the cringy parts. Pray tell. I for one don’t even know where to start. The only true representation in this was the food, but they didn’t even get “halo-halo” correctly. Instead, they were sipping bubble tea while calling it “halo-halo.”
What the hell was the gangster subplot there for? It was so fucking random.
